Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of French Literature in the Eighteenth Century As to politics, authority reigns uncontrolled. The parliaments are mute. The Fronde is only a movement without ability. Political questions are generally kept out of view. No man of talent during that time directed his attention to such points, with the exception of Fenelon and Massillon toward the end of the century. Every where else silence is maintained. Perhaps La Bruyere deserves also to be excepted. In regard to literature, in it more than in anything else, if possible, the same need of authority makes itself be felt. At that time conventional forms were established, of which some may be defended and others were adopted without examination. It is a kind of literary religion, mingled no doubt with supersti tion, but not with superstition in itself, because it is founded on true principles. It is connected with the worship of antiquity, imperfectly comprehended indeed, but approved, felt, and honoured. Here and there, however, We perceive some feeble wishes for independence; some men of talent complain, that litera ture is not sufficiently national, and they would go back to the middle ages, our own antiquity: they would free style from cer tain laws and restraints; but these are only powerless desires, the attempts of some men of second-rate ability, and weak aspira tions at what we in the present day term romantisme. No man of eminence adopts the creed of such ordinary persons, who consigned to contempt by the oracles of the classical religion, of which Boileau is high priest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Literary History of France I consider without false modesty or the fear that national amour propre prejudices me too favourably, as Pascal said, that a study of French Literature and the History of French Literature must be extremely beneficial to every man who has had an English training, whether he be an Englishman or simply of Anglo-Saxon origin. In a word, that a man who has been nourished upon English Literature would lose nothing and gain much from a knowledge of the spirit of French Literature. Indeed, these two literatures have developed themselves on the same lines, and for many centuries have derived immense benefit from each other; so that to study the one without a knowledge of the other would often, upon this or that point, be like following the course of a river without knowing the source, or studying a tree without having any knowledge of its roots. I should distrust the teacher of French Literature who ignored England, no less than the teacher of English Literature to whom France and her literary history were unknown. Without going back to the Middle Ages, considering alone those modern literatures that have entered in whatever way into our blood, our brain, and our hearts, what do we find? Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Memories of Eighteenth-Century America If the reader be not pleased with the following sketch of early American customs, he should blame a certain ancient sofa, and not the author! For it was the said sofa that caused these lines to be written, and it came about in this way: Among some old furniture handed down in our family is an unusually long mahogany sofa, upon which, says tradition, General Lafayette frequently sat when he came to take tea. Tradition further alleged that in the memoirs of some Frenchman (name not given) this fact was set forth at length. Curiosity to read what this unknown had to say upon the subject led through such pleasant literary country that soon the original purpose of the quest gave way to a constantly growing interest in these memoirs and records of the last quarter of the eighteenth century, from the battle of Lexington till the transfer of the Federal Government to the city of Washington. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of French LiteratureHE lack of a convenient and yet comprehensive history of French literature, beyond the range of skeleton outlines or compendiums of facts, has long been apparent from experience to the present writer. On the other hand, excellent works in French, such as those of Brunetiere or of M. Lanson, are written from a standpoint unfamiliar to the English-speaking reader or student, and take too much for granted. M. Lamson's book is, perhaps, the best one-volume history of French literature in existence, but foreigners often find it difficult to handle. An effort is here made to meet the needs of readers in a work going beyond simple outlines, yet not pretending to specialisation in every period a thing which is impossible for one man now that we are, of necessity, either mediaevalists or moderns. The book might, perhaps, more fittingly be called a literary history of France, inasmuch as the relations have been emphasised of literature and social environment, and the Latin writings of the Middle Ages have been included. Accuracy has, of course, been sought as far as possible in view of the wide range of the subject. Yet the author does not aspire, as some do, to the merit of an absolutely independent judgment on every topic. On the contrary, he considers it the duty of the composer of a synthesis to rely, to a reasonable degree, on those who have spent months or years on individual writers whom he must perforce treat summarily. He sets himself down unhesitatingly as a pickpurse of another's wit the authorities from whom he has readily drawn will, it is hoped, be found accounted for in the bibliography.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French in America, 1520-1880 Yet this exhibition surveys a wider field of history! Than that of the settlers of Detroit or even of New France. It includes the Huguenots who settled in the thirteen colonies and who played a part out of all proportion to their small numbers in the formation of our nation. It touches on the intellectual relationships of the eighteenth century the French authors for whom America was an exotic dream, the philosophers whose liberal thought was translated by Jefferson into a program of action, the scientists who became members of the youthful American Philosophical Society, as well as the officers of the armed forces of France whose intervention swung the balance of the War for Independence in favor of the colonies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of French Literature Those who read this book for purposes of study will, it is hoped, be already acquainted with the Primer which is, in effect, an introduction to it, and which contains what may be called a bird's-eye view of the subject. But, lest the wood should be lost sight of for the trees, notes or interchapters have been inserted between the several books, indicating the general lines of development followed by the great literature which I have attempted to survey. To these I have for the most part confined generalisations as distinct from facts. I have, I believe, given in the notes a sufficient list of authorities which those who desire to follow up the subject may consult. I have not been indiscriminately lavish in indicating editions of authors, though I believe that full information will be found as to those necessary for a scholarly working knowledge of French literature. I had originally hoped to illustrate the whole book with extracts; but I discovered that such a course would either swell it to an undesirable bulk, or else would provide passages too short and too few to be of much use. I have therefore confined the extracts to the mediaeval period, which can be illustrated by selections of moderate bulk, and in which such illustration, from the general resemblance between the individuals of each class, and the comparative rarity of the original texts, is specially desirable. To avoid the serious drawback of the difference of principle on which old French reprints have been constructed, as many of these extracts as possible have been printed from Herr Karl Bartsch's admirable Chrestomathie. But in cases where extracts were either not to be found there, or were not, in my judgment, sufficiently characteristic, I have departed from this plan. The illustration, by extracts, of the later literature, which requires more space, has been reserved for a separate volume. I had also intended to subjoin some tabular views of the chief literary forms, authors, and books of the successive centuries.
