Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Education in Pennsylvania: Private and Public, Elementary and Higher, From the Time the Swedes Settled on the Delaware to the Present Day Histories of educational systems and of methods of instruction, and statements showing the condition of education in certain countries at particular times, have been written; but no comprehensive work relating in detail the efforts of a people to provide for their own education, is known to exist. Certainly there is no such work in the English language. The omission seems strange. Surely, if the wars of nations, the intrigues of courts, the plots of politicians, conspiracies and rebellions, changes in the manners and customs of society, and the ups and downs of trade, are worthy of record in historic form, some interest should attach to what has been done by a people to lift themselves up by means of teachers and schools from darkness to light. The time may come, though it now seems distant, when the founding of a College or the organization of a system of instruction for a State will be considered an event of as much importance as the making of a speech or the fighting of a battle. It may even be found, when men and things shall be more justly weighed, that the quiet schoolmaster who thinks only of the task to which God seems to have appointed him, will be considered a factor quite as potent in all that tends to make a people great, as the soldier who so dazzles the public eye, or the politician who manages to fill so much space in the periodicals of the day. There is no patriotism more pure, more elevated, or more deserving of recognition than that of one whose highest ambition it is to store the minds of little children with knowledge, and to guide their footsteps in the path of duty, for in this humble task is involved all that is greatest and grandest in a State. The History of Education in Pennsylvania is of more than ordinary interest, as it throws a flood of light on many events that intimately concern the general history of the Commonwealth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Hundred and Fifty, Years of School History in Lancaster, Pennsylvania The patrons of this work, who encouraged and stimulated the author of it to prepare and publish a history of education in the City of Lancaster, have no occasion to apologize for or to regret the undertaking. The education of a people is at all times a very large share of their history; and to trace the men who, and the influences which, developed, organized and operated the educational forces of a community is in a large measure to set forth the history of that section of our county, our Commonwealth and our country. James Russel Lowell says: It was in making education not only common to all, but in some sense compulsory on all, that the destiny of the free republics of America was practically settled. During the past decade a great impulse has been given to the study and publication of our local history. It has come to be recognized that the investigation of it in detail must precede the fashioning by some master hand of this material into a compact and well-proportioned story of a great county, and of its most interesting and historic shire - town. The many monographs which have enriched the proceedings of the Lancaster County Historical Society have, each and all, no less immeasurable permanent value than passing popular interest. Originally projected as such a casual paper, the story of the schools of Lancaster grew into a volume. To have razeed it into a mere sketch would have been to discard and possibly forever lost annals that years (and even centuries) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The Keystone State, so nicknamed because it was geographically situated in the middle of the thirteen original colonies and played a crucial role in the founding of the United States, has remained at the heart of American history. Created partly as a safe haven for people from all walks of life, Pennsylvania is today the home of diverse cultures, religions, ethnic groups, social classes, and occupations. Many ideas, institutions, and interests that were formed or tested in Pennsylvania spread across America and beyond, and continue to inform American culture, society, and politics. Pennsylvania: A History of the Commonwealth is the first comprehensive history of the Keystone State in almost three decades. In it distinguished scholars view Pennsylvania's history critically and honestly, setting the Commonwealth's story in the larger context of national social, cultural, economic, and political development. Part I offers a narrative history and Part II offers a series of "Ways to Pennsylvania's Past" -- nine concise guides designed to enable readers to discover Pennsylvania's heritage for themselves. Pennsylvania: A History of the Commonwealth is the result of a unique collaboration between The Pennsylvania State University Press and The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC), the official history agency of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The result is a remarkable account of how Pennsylvanians have lived, worked, and played through the centuries.
