Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Florida Historical Society Harry T. and Hariette V. Moore Award Florida Book Awards, Silver Medal for Florida Nonfiction In May 1945, activists staged a “wade-in” at a whites-only beach in Miami, protesting the Jim Crow–era laws that denied blacks access to recreational waterfront areas. Pressured by protestors in this first postwar civil rights demonstration, the Dade County Commission ultimately designated the difficult-to-access Virginia Key as a beach for African Americans. The beach became vitally important to the community, offering a place to congregate with family and friends and to enjoy the natural wonders of the area. It was also a tangible victory in the continuing struggle for civil rights in public space. As Florida beaches were later desegregated, many viewed Virginia Key as symbolic of an oppressive past and ceased to patronize it. At the same time, white leaders responded to desegregation by decreasing attention to and funding for public spaces in general. The beach was largely ignored and eventually shut down. In White Sand Black Beach, historian and longtime Miami activist Gregory Bush recounts this unique story and the current state of the public waterfront in Miami. Recently environmentalists, community leaders, and civil rights activists have come together to revitalize the beach, and Bush highlights the potential to stimulate civic engagement in public planning processes. While local governments defer to booster and lobbying interests pushing for destination casinos and boat shows, Bush calls for a land ethic that connects people to the local environment. He seeks to shift the local political divisions beyond established interest groups and neoliberalism to a broader vision that simplifies human needs, and reconnects people to fundamental values such as health. A place of fellowship, relaxation, and interaction with nature, this beach, Bush argues, offers a common ground of hope for a better future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning some fifty years after Major Dade's command met their demise at the hands of a much larger force of Seminoles, notable citizens began to press both Florida and Federal legislators to acquire the battle site for everlasting preservation. Steadily increasing through the first two decades of the twentieth century, an impressive legion of supporters developed to include politicians, jurists, historians, business leaders, civic clubs, and prominent national figures such as General Douglas MacArthur. All these, along with strong public voices fanned by both local and out-of-state newspapers, finally succeeded in convincing the State of Florida to purchase eighty acres that encompassed most of the battle area on September 29, 1921. Dade was only the second property that had been set aside by the State for perpetual protection. Although it was a governmental acquisition, for more than thirty years "Dade Memorial Park" was actively maintained and managed by the citizens of Bushnell and Sumter County themselves. Today Dade Battlefield Historic State Park is a unique member of the multiple National Gold Medal Award-winning Florida State Parks system and remains loved by its neighbors as "our little park." Steven Rinck served eight years as president of the Seminole Wars Foundation, and still maintains active roles with that not-for-profit group. An avid student of history for all of his life, the retired Pasco County teacher and principal is past president of the Dade Battlefield Society, a trustee of the Fort King Heritage Foundation and a member of the Florida Historical Society. He is also active with historical societies in Sumter, Hernando, and Pasco counties. Steven is a consultant for the Pioneer Florida Museum & Village and a proud supporter of the Seminole Tribe's Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum. He reenacts at Second Seminole War, Civil War, and World War II events, and enjoys performing first-person historical impressions for school, military and civic groups. Beyond the Battle is Steven's first published literary endeavor, and he is excited that the personal stories of sacrifice and perseverance that were made in order to bring proper recognition to Dade Battlefield are at last being told.

Book excerpt: An astonishing account of Cuban exiles, CIA informants, and cocaine traffickers in Florida by the New York Times–bestselling author of South and West. In Miami, the National Book Award–winning author of The Year of Magical Thinking looks beyond postcard images of fluorescent waters, backlit islands, and pastel architecture to explore the murkier waters of a city on the edge. From Fidel Castro and the Bay of Pigs invasion to Lee Harvey Oswald and the Kennedy assassination to Oliver North and the Iran–Contra affair, Joan Didion uncovers political intrigues and shadowy underworld connections, and documents the US government’s “seduction and betrayal” of the Cuban exile community in Dade County. She writes of hotels that offer “guerrilla discounts,” gun shops that advertise Father’s Day deals, and a real-estate market where “Unusual Security and Ready Access to the Ocean” are perks for wealthy homeowners looking to make a quick escape. With a booming drug trade, staggering racial and class inequities, and skyrocketing murder rates, Miami in the 1980s felt more like a Third World capital than a modern American city. Didion describes the violence, passion, and paranoia of these troubled times in arresting detail and “beautifully evocative prose” (The New York Times Book Review). A vital report on an immigrant community traumatized by broken dreams and the cynicism of US foreign policy, Miami is a masterwork of literary journalism whose insights are timelier and more important than ever.

Book excerpt: "In presenting us with a vision of organic exuberance and human delight, which ecology and ecological design promise to open up for us, McHarg revives the hope for a better world." --Lewis Mumford ". . . important to America and all the rest of the world in our struggle to design rational, wholesome, and productive landscapes." --Laurie Olin, Hanna Olin, Ltd. "This century's most influential landscape architecture book." --Landscape Architecture ". . . an enduring contribution to the technical literature of landscape planning and to that unfortunately small collection of writings which speak with emotional eloquence of the importance of ecological principles in regional planning." --Landscape and Urban Planning In the twenty-five years since it first took the academic world by storm, Design With Nature has done much to redefine the fields of landscape architecture, urban and regional planning, and ecological design. It has also left a permanent mark on the ongoing discussion of mankind's place in nature and nature's place in mankind within the physical sciences and humanities. Described by one enthusiastic reviewer as a "user's manual for our world," Design With Nature offers a practical blueprint for a new, healthier relationship between the built environment and nature. In so doing, it provides nothing less than the scientific, technical, and philosophical foundations for a mature civilization that will, as Lewis Mumford ecstatically put it in his Introduction to the 1969 edition, "replace the polluted, bulldozed, machine-dominated, dehumanized, explosion-threatened world that is even now disintegrating and disappearing before our eyes."
