Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Republic County, Kansas A single county in the great state of Kansas occupies but an insignificant place on the map of the world, and its people and its story are comparatively unknown. Yet the grand river of national history is formed by the union of many rills of traditions and record, flowing from a thousand counties and states all over the land. The tracing of one of these rills to its source is the province of the present little volume. It is the aim of this work to collect and preserve some of the facts of the early settlement, subsequent growth and development of one of the leading counties of a young, yet great and glorious state. The families who were early on the ground, and whose members have contributed to make the county what it is, are worthy of remembrance; and their difficulties and sorrows, labors and patriotism, should not be allowed to fall into oblivion. By a knowledge of these, the present generation will be instructed, and the future will be guided. All history, if properly written, is profitable; and there is not a country, or a city, or a hamlet, on the globe, whose history might not be more or less valuable to posterity. We trust this little volume will be the means of preserving from the empire of decay Si host of incidents, of recollections and of anecdotes relating to the land of pioneers and first settlers of the county, which, in the estimation of the historian and student of history, are of priceless value, but which otherwise would soon fade from the memories of the living. Still, a perfect and complete history of any county is one of the impossibilities, and this work may be incomplete in many particulars. Nor, indeed, is it possible for it to be otherwise, as it is not permitted any man to attain perfection. Its regions lie beyond our reach. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Leavenworth County, Kansas History is but a record of the happenings of human events, the per sonal element ever being present, and the history of a community or county is merely a record of those Who have contributed to its upbuild ing and advancement. Each step in the development 'of the above men tioned institutions; each incident caonnected with the passing of the original inhabitants of the territory of which our country is now com posed as well. As the coming of the pioneers - our forefathers - is history today. Centered about every pioneer family; about the rude log cabin, long since deserted and fallen to decay; about the old landmarks that live now only in our memory; about the farms, and about the grave marked by some weather worn piece, there is a story worth the telling; a story that would interest someone. Unfortunately the authors' have been compelled to eliminate much that they would like to tell owing to want of space. Having finished our undertaking of writing a history of Leavenworth County, though not to our satisfaction, we look back upon our labor as one of love and pleasure. While the task has been a tedious one, yet we feel a bit of satisfaction in our belief that we have written a story of our county in Leavenworth County language; that it is not so much written as spoken and in a way that we feel the average citizen can read and understand. We claim for this work no literary merit, neither dowe claim absolute correctness. Errors have doubless occurred by rea son of transcribing, typesetting and proof reading. Again much of this history as it is written herein has been handed down by word of mouth, and realizing as we do the frailty of human memory, we have attempted to arrive at the truth as best we could. Thoughout this work we have tried to tell the story of Leavenworth County and its people simply and plainly with the hope that we might be able to present a substantially authentic history of our county and its people to which the present and future generations may refer with con fidence and satisfaction as the years come and go, that it may be a per manent record for all time, and incidentally to inspire, by the sweep of the story, a love for our county and our cities and an intelligent solicitude for their destiny. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Impressions of Early Kansas As I sit by the western window and the brief winter afternoon draws toward its close, my mind turns back to dear old Waverley. Outside the wind is rising and the waning day shows gray and chill, but far away I see visions of a fair, deep blue sky, gemmed with fleecy floating clouds. Instead of deep snows and ice bound streams, are wide expanses of green fields, velvet carpeted, and sown thickly with johnny-jump-ups and dainty strawberry blossoms. Away over the far wooded hills, distance lends enchantment to the purplish haze that rests forever above the winding river; while around all is spread the fairest country that ever gladdened the eyes and hearts of men, - the beautiful prairies of Kansas. Among the many towns and embryo cities that sprang up as it were by magic on the opening of the territory in eighteen fifty-five, was my own dear town of Waverley. This ambitious little county seat was laid out in true generous Western fashion over a square mile or so of charming hill and dale, its modest frame houses, many of them built of the native black walnut, separated by wide stretches of greenest verdure. Here and there the streets led over picturesque wooden bridges, for from the hilly eastern border to the noble plateau that formed the western boundary, there was a succession of hills and hollows, varied by deep, winding ravines, each of which prisoned a brawling, pigmy torrent during the winter thaws and the spring rains. Crowning the brow of the eastern hill, was the Woodson Hotel, a many windowed frame building of two stories, looking south. In front was a wide veranda from whose pleasant shelter the wayfarer could overlook the little city and the broad wagon road with its traffic and bustle, varied now and then by slow moving ox teams, or long lines of canvas covered wagons of the countless home seekers. These wagons were filled with furniture and bedding, weary women and sunburnt children. Sometimes a stove pipe protruded through an opening in the canvas telling of an attempt at warmth and comfort when the prairie winds blew cold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Heroes in Our Defense, Labette County, Kansas When we search the record of our state and nation, and compare Labette County's record we are proud of our boys, our women folk, our children and our men - Labette County has never been found wanting. In presenting this book to the people of the country the publishers have attempted in some small measure to bring before them in compact form, an all too brief story of their own community, coupled with illustrations and a pictorial history of some of our patriots who have pledged their all their very lives that Liberty may live and Right may Triumph. Within the covers of this book we have attempted to set forth what Labette County and her people typify. (personal details and records of individual acts of patriotism is lacking because of the removal from this locality of many who partici pated in the world struggle.) If we have succeeded the success is due not to us, not to the typographer who prepared this book, but to the mothers and fathers who raised these sons, for the highest and greatest service to Humanity and to their individual efforts in backing them at home. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Wyandotte County, Kansas, Vol. 1: And Its People Through all the history of Kansas and of Wyandotte county there runs a thread of romance. There is an odd fascination in the accounts of those old explorers who came this way in the three centuries preceding the coming of the white men to dwell here. There is a quiet charm about the old Indian legends and in the stories of the wars and wanderings of these ancient tribes. There is something delightfully interesting in the tales of the old steamboat days told by the men and women who came up the Missouri and Kansas rivers in the Territorial days. The long struggle for statehood, the Border strife and the final conquest, one of the most thrilling periods in our nations history, appeal to the author as well as to the reader. The early history of Kansas and of Wyandotte county interwoven and inseparable, is a repetition of the old story of the battle of civilization with the forces of the wilderness. The passing of the savage Red Man, the education of his more enlightened brother, the Emigrant Indian from the east, the beginning of the future's development, and the final victory of peace, are in harmony with the history of Kansas and of Wyandotte county, which is a story crowded with vicissitudes and leading through a phenomenal growth to a promise of splendid triumph. It has been the aim of the author to present something of all this in this work. And it should not be a colorless summary of dry facts and figures. The personal reminiscences of men and women of the early days who are still living have been used to give life and realism to the work. Here is undertaken a record of the progress of Wyandotte county, its people and its institutions up to the close of the first decade of the twentieth century. It is a story full of absorbing interest and it has been the endeavor of the author and those with whom he has been associated to tell it in an accurate but attractive manner. In this work the author, having been a citizen of the county for more than twenty-five years, has accumulated in that time much of that which appears in these two volumes. Also he has had access to a fund of historical information from the Kansas State Historical Society and in the public library of Kansas City, Kansas. Many others have contributed information, for which the author, the publisher and the reader, as well, are indebted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Shawnee County, Kansas: And Representative Citizens These sketches, replete with stirring incidents and intense experiences, will naturally prove to most of the readers of this book its most attractive feature. In the aggregate of personal memoirs thus collated will be found a vivid epitome of the growth of Shawnee County, which will fitly supplement the historical statement; for the development of the county is identified with that of the men and women to whom it is attributable. The publishers have endeavored in the preparation of the work to pass over no feature of it slightingly, but to give heed to the minutest details, and thus to invest it with a substantial accuracy which no other treatment would afford. The result has amply justified the care thus exercised, for in our belief no more reliable production, under the circumstances, could be laid before its readers. We have given special prominence to the portraits of representative citizens, which appear throughout this volume, and believe they will prove a most interesting feature of the work. We have sought to illustrate the different spheres of industrial and professional achievements as conspicuously as possible. To those who have kindly interested themselves in the successful preparation of this work, and who have voluntarily contributed most useful information and data, we herewith tender our grateful acknowledgement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Standard History of Kansas and Kansans, Vol. 1 N 0 one can ever be more conscious of the imperfections of this work than is the author. The history of Kansas, to be complete, can not be confined to the narrow bounds of two volumes. Adequately treated, there should be ten, and then there would be no dreary page. For there is no other history like Kansas history - it is an inspiration. But with whatever faults the book is burdened, it will be the model for the future historian by which to write the complete history of Kansas. It is on correct historical lines, and it is hoped that its mission and its aims will be found what the author intended - truth fearlessly told and justice served.
