Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Chemistry, Vol. 1 of 2 It is natural to feel a desire to be acquainted with the origin and the progress of such a science; and to know something of the history and character of those numerous votaries to whom it is indebted for its pro gress and improvement. The object of this little Work is to gratify these laudable wishes, by taking a rapid View of the progress of Chemistry, from its first rude and disgraceful beginnings till it has reached its pre sent state of importance and dignity. I shall divide the subject into fifteen chapters. In'the first I shall treat of Alchymy, which may be considered as the in auspicious commencement of the science, and which, in fact, consists of little else than an account of dupes and impostors; every where so full of fiction and oh scurity, that it is a hopeless and almost impossible task to reach the truth. In the second Chapter I shall endeavour to point out the few small chemical rills, which were known to the ancients. These I shall fol low in their progress, in the succeeding chapters, till at last, augmented by an infinite number of streams owing at once from a thousand different quarters, they have swelled to the mighty river, which now ows ou majestically, wafting wealth and information to the civilized world. While it has passed through a number of editions since, there has been no attempt to bring it up to date nor to revise it in any way, and although there has been much to preoccupy me, especially in other lines Of work, I recognize the fact that there has been no excuse for such neglect. It has now been entirely rewritten on a changed plan of arrangement and made to cover the great progress in the science which has taken place since it first appeared. Some material considered unnecessary has been eliminated so that it might be kept within the same compass that has proved so convenient for those who could not devote to the subject the time required by the larger treatises. The lectures have dealt in a direct informal way with the fundamental ideas of the science: their origin, their philosophical basis, the critical periods in their development, and the personalities of the great men whose efforts have contributed to that development. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Chemistry, Vol. 2 of 2 His Writings were exceedingly numerous, and treated of science, theology, metaphysics, and politics. Of his theological, metaphysical, and political writings it is not our business in this work to take any notice. His scientific works treat of electricity, optics, and chemistry. As an electrician he was respectable; as an Optician, a compiler; as a chemist, a discoverer. He wrote also a book on perspective which I have never had an opportunity of perusing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Chemistry From the Earliest Times The late Dr. Campbell Brown was accustomed, as part of his Chemical Course at Liverpool University, to deliver a series of Lectures on the History of Chemistry. These lectures were to him a labour of love, and were prepared after much research into the original authorities, including many old and rare treatises. 'it was his intention, when release from the duties of his Chair should have afforded him the necessary leisure, to revise the lectures and to put them into shape for publication. Death put a sudden term to his labours before the period of leisure arrived, and the lectures were left in the form of manu script notes, more or less complete, but not in that perfect shape which Dr. Campbell Brown would have wished if the History were to be published. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Introduction to Chemistry IN the preparation of this volume the purpose has been to present an historical account of the more important facts and theories of chemistry, as these disclosed themselves to the original workers in this branch of science. No attempt has been made to write a formal History of Chemistry, either as a survey of the various periods into which the history of the science may be divided, or in the more usual biographical form. The material has been classified by subjects rather than by authors; but it will be found that under this system the work of individual experimenters is described quite as fully as in a biographical survey, whilst in the case of certain chemists, such as Priestley, Lavoisier and gay-lussac, it has been possible to include detailed descriptions of experimental work which could scarcely have found a place in a brief biography. The Biographical Index provides a key to the work of each author as it is described in the text, and contains most of the essential items for an account in narrative form of the achievements of the great pioneers of chemistry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Chemical Theories and Laws Vwiat classification of the principles of chemistry shall be adopted depends on what is now taken to be the purpose of the science. An examination of the progress of chemistry at different times, in the light of the knowledge we have to-day, seems to me to show that the main purpose of the science has always been the same. Chemistry has concerned itself in the past, as it concerns itself now, with the changes of material things; and, although the aspects of this study have been as varied as those of the transmutations of matter wherewith it deals, the essential object of the study, at all times, may be expressed in the language of to-day as being to describe, to set in due order, and to connect the changes of composition and the changes of properties which occur simultaneously in systems of homogeneous substances, and the conditions under which these changes proceed. The history of the advances which have been made towards attaining this object is the history of the principles of chemistry. The actions of our surroundings on our senses are spoken of as the properties of substances. If all the properties, except, it may be, the masses of any portions of a substance obtained by sifting or sorting that substance are the same. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chemistry for Young People After this general acquaintance is secured, the commoner elements are taken up, and the reader is told those more important. Facts about each which should be known, even to one who desires no ex pert knowledge of their qualities. After obtain ing such general knowledge of these elements, their qualities and their uses, the reader is led to enter a little more deeply into the greater principles that enable us to understand their action one upon an other, and to become acquainted with the Periodi cal Tables wherein the relations of all elements to one another is shown to depend upon their atomic weight. These relations include the subjects of valence, of atomic heat, and, generally, of chemical action as classified by modern chemists. To the enormous subject of organic chemistry, or the chemistry of carbon compounds, but one chapter is given; but in this are set forth such general laws and rules as enable the reader to comprehend the complexity of the subject and the methods by which chemists are able to make new compounds and to predict their qualities. After this general review of the subject, there follows a discussion of the history of chemistry and of its relation to human progress, which con tains, though in brief form, the important facts enabling young readers to know the importance of the part played by modern scientific chemistry in practical life. Then follows a set of tables which give in a complete way the essential facts in relation to all elements, thus completing those tables which in the earlier part of the book are confined to the more familiar elements. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A College Text-Book of Chemistry In the Opinion of the author the time has not yet come for the abandonment of the study of elements and their compounds in what some are pleased to call the Old fashioned way. Indeed it seems essential that such study must always form the basis Of the higher or spiritual study Of chemistry. All chemists are thankful for the new conceptions that have been given to them in the last few years, and students must be made familiar with them in a general way.
