The second lecture treats of the reading and general attainments of physicians from the foundation of our College, in 1518, to the beginning of the eighteenth century. I have described, as an example of what the course of education and the learning of a physician were at the end of this period, the studies and attainments of Dr. Edward Browne, who lived from 1644 to 1708, and was physician to St. Bartholomew's Hospital. In the third and fourth lectures I have tried to show how that part of medicine which consists in the precise observation of patients grew up in England, Scotland, and Ireland; and I have particularly considered the effect of the works of Mayerne, Glisson, and Sydenham upon this study in England, and the influence of Boerhaave upon it in Scotland and Ireland.
