This book was released on 2001 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finding Your Family in County Down This illustrated, well indexed book, was created exclusively to help you find your family in County Down, Ireland. Focusing specifically on families within the county, it includes an introduction to research and sources in Down. The most numerous families from birth records are given, as well as rather rare Down families found in heraldic records. Included you will find a full page county map from the Atlas of Ireland, along with a listing of modern parishes and old townlands, along with the address and location of records for more research. Published by the Irish Genealogical Foundation, this book was originally made for members researching in Down. What this book does This work includes copies of actual records (some worn, torn and faded), from the IGF Library. It also includes rough sketches of family coats of arms and notes from centuries past - seldom found elsewhere. The resources provided here will help research any family in the county, including old Irish families, and settler families from England, Scotland, Wales and the continent. This book is a hands on guide for finding your family in Down - some family history is included - but it is not a gigantic collection of family histories . (For that see 'The Book of Irish Families, great & small', the first book in the Irish Families series by O'Laughlin.) The Irish Families Project for Down The Master book to the 29 volume Irish Families series is 'The Book of Irish Families, great & small'. That book gives hundreds of family histories from County Down and the surrounding areas. "County Down Genealogy and Family History Notes", volume 14 in the series, expands upon that coverage with added families and new resources just for Down. (In this way both books can work together as a set if desired, or they may be used independently for research.) Among the most numerous families here in the 19th century were: Thompson (Thomson) Smith (Smyth, Smythe), Campbell (Cambell, Camble), Martin (Martyn) Patterson (Paterson, Pattersen) Wilson (Willson) Graham, Johnston (Johnson), Murray (Murry), Brown (Browne), Robinson (Robenson, Robinsen), Hamilton, Bell, Scott (Scot) and Boyd. The most noted old Irish families in Down were those of McQuillan, Mac Gilmore, O'Neill, Mac Cartan, O'Neill and Magennis. Other noted family that hailed from Down were Hill, Bradshaw, Savage, Fraser, Jackson, Taylor, Walker, Watson. Remember also that part of Belfast is contained in County Down as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To appreciate the value of the concept of the townland the best course for us is to examine in detail every aspect of one or more of them in terms of our own existence. In local history studies we concentrate on the community that has lived in the townland. This publication will introduce the reader to the documentary sources that survive in archivies and explain how they can be related to the traditions, the artefacts and the oral evidence. It will provide a framework plus numerous worked examples for those with an interest in studying the townland where their ancestors lived. Set as a basis upon which further research could be undertaken this important study begins by choosing eight townlands across Ulster providing a variety of concepts, ideas and observations which will interest the family and local historian alike. Indeed the editors in their introduction observe, that just as local historians, not just those with a special interest in local and family hsitory, to appreciate the significance of the townland in Irish history. The townlands covered in this study include: Forttown, Co. Antrim; Scolboa, Co. Antrim; Ballymagee, Co. Down; Cranfield, Co. Down; Drumskinny 3 & Montiaghroe, Co. Fermanagh; Gallan, Co. Tyrone; Holly-hill, Co. Tyrone; and Owenreagh, Co. Londonderry. In casting their net wide the contributors have managed to build up a picture of townlands across the country and have ensured that this book is representative of the whole of Ulster and not any single part or even merely the eight townlands under study.

Book excerpt: The Ordnance Survey Memoirs are a uniquely detailed source for the history of the northern half of Ireland immediately before the Great Famine. They were written in the 1830s to accompany the Ordnance Survey maps, but were not published at the time. In these new editions they act as a 19th century Domesday book and are essential to the understanding of the cultural heritage of their communities. They document the landscape and situation, buildings and antiquities, land-holdings and population, and employment and livelihood of the parishes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive survey and analysis of the Presbyterian community in its important formative period. The Presbyterian community in Ulster was created by waves of immigration, massively reinforced in the 1690s as Scots fled successive poor harvests and famine, and by 1700 Presbyterians formed the largest Protestant community in the north of Ireland. This book is a comprehensive survey and analysis of the Presbyterian community in this important formative period. It shows how the Presbyterians formed a highly organised, self-confident community which exercised a rigorous discipline over its members and had a well-developed intellectual life. It considers the various social groups within the community, demonstrating how the always small aristocratic and gentry component dwindled andwas virtually extinct by the 1730s, the Presbyterians deriving their strength from the middling sorts - clergy, doctors, lawyers, merchants, traders and, in particular, successful farmers and those active in the rapidly growing linen trades - and among the laborious poor. It discusses how Presbyterians were part of the economically dynamic element of Irish society; how they took the lead in the emigration movement to the American colonies; and how they maintained links with Scotland and related to other communities, in Ireland and elsewhere. Later in the eighteenth century, the Presbyterian community went on to form the backbone of the Republican, separatist movement. ROBERT WHAN obtained his Ph.D. in History from Queen's University, Belfast.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Farming in the generation between 1930 and 1960 saw changes on a previously unknown scale. On most holdings, work continued to be carried out by all the family members. Men, women and children all had roles in the production of crops and livestock. At busier times neighbours were called on for help, and workers were also hired on some farms, either full-time or seasonally. All of these relationships could lead to tensions and conflict, but they also led to great intimacy and kindness, with individuals showing commitment to the well-being of their family, their neighbours, and even their employers and employees. This book uses oral history to explore life on Ulster farms between 1930 and 1960. This valuable record of the faming community describes in fascinating detail the many changes in practically every aspect of working life and their associated patterns of social life, all in the face of increasing government intervention, globalisation of markets, and the cataclysm of the Second World War. These massive changes have often been seen as damaging social networks in rural areas, but the collective memories of those involved bear witness to their marvellous capacity to adapt. The oral testimonies on which the book is based show that, for farming people, change could and did create new relationships and wider opportunities on both a professional and personal level.
