Book excerpt: The Alabama 47th Infantry Regiment was organized at Loachapoka, May 22, 1862 and transferred to Virginia late in June. Assigned to Gen. Stonewall Jackson's corps, the regiment was brigaded under General Taliaferro, with three Virginia regiments and the Forty-eighth Alabama. A few weeks later the regiment passed through the ordeal of battle at Cedar Run, where it lost 12 killed and 76 wounded, or nearly a third of its force present. At the second Manassas the Forty-seventh was again engaged, and lost 7 killed and 25 wounded. It was present at Chantilly and the capture of Harper's Ferry; entered the battle of Sharpsburg with 115 men, and lost every commissioned officer present on the field, mustering 17 men the next morning under a sergeant. The regiment wintered on the Rappahannock and witnessed the repulse of Burnside at Fredericksburg. Transferred to the brigade of Gen. Law -- Fourth, Fifteenth, Forty-fourth, Fifty-seventh, and Forty-eighth Alabama -- Hood's division, Longstreet's corps, the Forty-seventh lost several men in the fight at Suffolk. Rejoining the main army, the regiment marched into Pennsylvania, and poured out the blood of its bravest men at Gettysburg. Two months later the corps was transferred to north Georgia, and the Forty-seventh lost very severely at Chickamauga. It took part in the investment of Knoxville with light loss, and in the privations of the winter campaign in east Tennessee. Rejoining the Virginia army the regiment fought with severe loss at the Wilderness, and was in the brilliant charge on Warren's corps at Spottsylvania, where the brigade opened the battle. In all the subsequent operations around Richmond the regiment took part, and in the grim defenses that surrounded Petersburg it endured the perils and privations of the last sullen and persistent struggle. As part of Perry's brigade, the Forty-seventh laid down its arms at Appomattox, about 90 strong. Book excerpt: "In this important volume, Bill Bowers has compiled an in-depth look at the 47th Georgia Regiment that should prove invaluable for anyone interested in the history or genealogy of Georgians who served in the 47th, which is shown to be a constantly evolving unit due to casualties, captures, promotions, transfers, illness, absentees, and other factors. His rosters are made even more useful by a chronological updating of personnel changes, along with correspondence, orders, and editor's notes. Topping off the volume are "The Memoirs of Captain Benjamin S. Williams," which gives an captivating first-hand narrative of the role of the 47th during the Civil War. Book excerpt: "The dead and wounded of the 47th lay everywhere underfoot". With these words Charles Bean, Australia's Official War Historian, described the battlefield of Dernancourt on the morning of the 5th of April, 1918, strewn with the bodies of the Australian dead. It was the final tragic chapter in the story of the 47th Australian Infantry Battalion in the First World War. One of the shortest lived and most battle hardened of the 1st Australian Imperial Force's battalions, the 47th was formed in Egypt in 1916 and disbanded two years later having suffered one of the highest casualty rates of any Australian unit. Their story is remarkable for many reasons. Dogged by command and discipline troubles and bled white by the desperate attrition battles of 1916 and 1917, they fought on against a determined and skilful enemy in battles where the fortunes of war seemed stacked against them at every turn. Not only did they have the misfortune to be called into some of the A.I.F.'s most costly campaigns, chance often found them in the worst places within those battles. Though their story is one of almost unrelieved tragedy, it is also story of remarkable courage, endurance and heroism. It is the story of the 1st A.I.F. itself - punished, beaten, sometimes reviled for their indiscipline, they fought on - fewer, leaner and harder - until final victory was won. And at its end, in an extraordinary gesture of mateship, the remnants of the 47th Battalion reunited. Having been scattered to other units after their disbandment, the survivors gathered in Belgium for one last photo together. Only 73 remained.

Book excerpt: The North Carolina 47th Infantry Regiment was organized in March, 1862, at Camp Mangum, near Raleigh, North Carolina. It served in the Department of North Carolina until May, 1863. During the conflict it was brigaded under Generals Pettigrew, Kirkland, and MacRae. The regiment spent the first year in and around North Carolina and Southern Virginia. In March of 1863 it participated in the unsuccessful attempt to recapture New Bern, N.C. The 47th moved to Virginia in May 1863 and fought with the Army of Northern Virginia beginning at Gettysburg. In June of 1863 it was assigned to the Army of Northern Virginia along with Brigadier General James J. Pettigrew, under Major General Henry Heth, of A.P. Hill's 3rd Corps. On July 1st, 1863 the Brigade under commander James Pettigrew was the first to engage the Union forces of General John Buford. The 47th was held in reserve during that first engagement, but later took part in Pickett's Charge under James Pettigrew. During the battle of Gettyburg it's losses were 21 killed and 140 wounded (35% of the 567 engaged.) General James Pettigrew was killed in the retreat from Gettysburg and the brigade was later assigned to Brigadier Generals Kirkland and MacRae. The 47th fought at Cold Harbor, then was involved in the long Petersburg siege south of the James River and the Appomattox Campaign. They reported 42 casualties at Bristoe and 20 at The Wilderness. It surrendered 5 officers and 72 men.
