Book excerpt: Re-creating life in past times to educate the public and the historical villages where role-playing takes place can provide teens with the opportunity to learn skills from bygone times, such as blacksmithing or cabinetmaking, and earn a living. Historical villages give people the chance to bring another time to life, using historical tools and wearing period clothing. Costume design, set building, and makeup artistry, among other jobs, are explored, as well as how the experience gained at a historical village can be applied to careers within the tourism and museum industries and in carpentry and acting.

Book excerpt: Upper Township (after being known as the Upper Precinct of Cape May County since 1723) was founded in 1798 by John Townsend, but actually, the area was first inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Indians, who lived there and hunted in the rivers and woods for food for hundreds of years. The area grew as people from New York, northern New Jersey, and other outlying areas came to the region for its rich land and natural resources. Whaling, shipbuilding, and farming became the principal jobs. They brought their cultures and religions with them (Quakers, Baptists, Methodists, and Presbyterians), and gradually, an area of just a few villages developed into a larger township with 10 different villages. The 2010 census listed the population at 12,373 over an area of nearly 69 square miles. Residents and visitors can avail themselves of a variety of historic sites such as the Tuckahoe Train Station (1894), the Gandy Farmhouse (1815), and the restored Friendship School (1830s). In addition, there are many activities available both on land and on the Tuckahoe River, as well as the pristine beaches of Strathmere.

Some sit on ancient Bronze Age homesteads, others came into existence only in the last few hundred years. The prettiest of all appear here, surrounded by lovely landscape from Devon to the Lake District to Northumberland. "[A] handsome book...here is unspoiled village after village, beautifully delineated with photographs and well-matched by an informed and understanding text."--House and Garden.

Book excerpt: No state in the entire Nation is richer in Indian names, or in fact, in Indian history than Pennsylvania. These Indian names of Pennsylvania are full of music, but, of far greater importance, they are full of history. A History of the Indian Villages and Place Names in Pennsylvania, which was first published in 1928, is the only major book of the 20th century that traces Pennsylvania’s Indian place and names for their correct form, origin and history. Its pages are filled with the most incredible collection of information ever assembled on the Indian villages of Pennsylvania and their Indian place names and is an Indian history scholar’s delight. In preparing his book, Dr. Donehoo researched every available source of printed material about Indian place names in Pennsylvania. He also walked nearly every Indian trail, from the Delaware to the Ohio, using early trader’s journals and maps as his guide, to seek out the places the Indians lived. Each Indian name comes complete with historical notes by the author. The book includes a list of all the sources used to authenticate each Indian place name. An excellent bibliography follows at the conclusion of the work along with appendixes listing: the Indian villages of New York destroyed by General Sullivan’s army in 1779, prehistoric works in Pennsylvania by county, and an alphabetical listing of all Indian named places in each county.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sabrina Ardizzoni’s book is an in-depth analysis of Hakka women in tulou villages in Southeast China. Based on fieldwork, data acquired through local documents, diverse material and symbolic culture elements, this study adopts an original approach that includes historical-textual investigation and socio-anthropological enquiry. Having interviewed local Hakka women and participated in rural village events, public and private, in west Fujian’s Hakka tulou area, the author provides a comprehensive overview of the historical threads and cultural processes that lead to the construction of the ideal Hakka woman, as well as an insightful analysis of the multifaceted Hakka society in which rural women reinvent their social subjectivity and negotiate their position between traditional constructs and modern dynamics.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BEST SELLER • The basis for the HBO documentary now streaming on HBO Max For five years, James and Deborah Fallows have travelled across America in a single-engine prop airplane. Visiting dozens of towns, the America they saw is acutely conscious of its problems—from economic dislocation to the opioid scourge—but it is also crafting solutions, with a practical-minded determination at dramatic odds with the bitter paralysis of national politics. At times of dysfunction on a national level, reform possibilities have often arisen from the local level. The Fallowses describe America in the middle of one of these creative waves. Their view of the country is as complex and contradictory as America itself, but it also reflects the energy, the generosity and compassion, the dreams, and the determination of many who are in the midst of making things better. Our Towns is the story of their journey—and an account of a country busy remaking itself.

Book excerpt: "Youngtown, Arizona, opened in 1954 and was the first development community to have a minimum age requirement (then 65) and to ban underage children as permanent residents. The developer Del Webb unveiled Sun City six years later. Adjacent to Yountown, it offered modest homes abutting a golf course. In the ensuing decades, active adult communities have proliferated, including Harold Schwartz's The Villages in central Florida, today [America's] largest retirement community. For nearly sixty years, the success of these and similar communities has changed the image of retirees from frail, impoverished old people to energetic, well-off adults enjoying a resort-like lifestyle. While some experts predicted these communities would fail or undermine the obligations between generations, they are now firmly embedded as one possible extension of the American Dream. Judith Ann Trolander's study of the "active adult" lifestyle focuses specifically on how the development of age-restricted communities has redefined the sense of self-identity among the elderly; changed the popular image of retirees; called attention to attitudes of the elderly toward children; popularized golf-course, gated, and amenity-rich developments; and made this new, age-restricted lifestyle affordable or accessible to large numbers of retirees - some of whom may actually continue working. Examining the origins, development, failures, and challenges facing these communities as the baby boomer population continues to age, Trolander offers a truly original defense of a sometimes controversial aspect of American life."--Book cover.
