Drs; Doyle and Milner Thomas Moore John Lawless Thomas Furlong Richard Lalor Shiel Thomas Steele Counsellor Bric Thomas Addis Emmet William Cobbett Sir Michael O'loghlen, Etc;, Etc;, With a Glance at the Future Destiny of Ireland The name of my immortal subject has been familiar to the civilized world for nearly forty years. The free of the earth venerate it - the tyrants and task-masters of men hate its utterance, so ominous of the annihilation of their unhallowed caste. Were those who have been benefited by the labors of his life, to assemble in congress, at the call of gratitude, an assembly would be formed without a parallel in all past history. The Asiatic of the Indian Peninsula would leave his rice crops by the banks of the sacred Ganges; Africa would send forth her dusky deputies; the West Indies their emancipated dark men; Canada her grateful reformers, and Europe the noblest of her free and of her fallen races. The voice of Kosciusko, from the tomb, would command some son worthy of Poland, to join the great chorus of humanity, in singing praises to the common benefactor. It would be a testimonial equal to its cause, if all the world were represented, and not otherwise. It is the character of true greatness to attract greatness, as the magnet draws towards itself the finely-tempered steel. Of this truth, the life of Daniel O'Connell, like that of a very differently constituted hero - Bonaparte - is a strong exemplification, and much of O'Connell's public character and glory will be found to emanate from his "friends." The age we live in certainly excels all antiquity in the art of making professions, although it falls decidedly behind the past in men of genuine greatness of soul. Book Synopsis Captain Rock by : James S. Donnelly, Jr
Download or read book Captain Rock written by James S. Donnelly, Jr and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2009-12-15 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named for its mythical leader “Captain Rock,” avenger of agrarian wrongs, the Rockite movement of 1821–24 in Ireland was notorious for its extraordinary violence. In Captain Rock, James S. Donnelly, Jr., offers both a fine-grained analysis of the conflict and a broad exploration of Irish rural society after the French revolutionary and Napoleonic wars. Originating in west Limerick, the Rockite movement spread quickly under the impact of a prolonged economic depression. Before long the insurgency embraced many of the better-off farmers. The intensity of the Rockites’ grievances, the frequency of their resort to sensational violence, and their appeal on such key issues as rents and tithes presented a nightmarish challenge to Dublin Castle—prompting in turn a major reorganization of the police, a purging of the local magistracy, the introduction of large military reinforcements, and a determined campaign of judicial repression. A great upsurge in sectarianism and millenarianism, Donnelly shows, added fuel to the conflagration. Inspired by prophecies of doom for the Anglo-Irish Protestants who ruled the country, the overwhelmingly Catholic Rockites strove to hasten the demise of the landed elite they viewed as oppressors. Drawing on a wealth of sources—including reports from policemen, military officers, magistrates, and landowners as well as from newspapers, pamphlets, parliamentary inquiries, depositions, rebel proclamations, and threatening missives sent by Rockites to their enemies—Captain Rock offers a detailed anatomy of a dangerous, widespread insurgency whose distinctive political contours will force historians to expand their notions of how agrarian militancy influenced Irish nationalism in the years before the Great Famine of 1845–51.

This book was released on 2017-06-06 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Till the researches of modern historians proved the contrary, a widespread belief existed in this country that the accession of Elizabeth was hailed by the majority of the nation as the deliverance of an enthralled and coerced people from the bondage of Home. In view, however, of known facts, even hostile critics are forced to admit that the final establishment of the tenets of the Heformation ill England was the outcome of a slow process of evolution-assisted, it is true, by a protestant legislature and several favorable local circumstances, but still an evolution-which lasted the greater part of a century. At the outset, little if anything presaged the ultimate and mighty change. The Queen received the congratulations of the episcopate with approbation and caused Masses to be duly sung for her sister's soul. In her own domestic chapel she continued to be present at the angnst sacrifice of the Catholic Church, frequently availed herself of Confession, manifested respect for sacred images and pictures, and was I indulgent to the affectionate practice of praying for the souls of the departed.' In a word, she showed by her whole demeanour her resolution of abiding by her solemn oath to the late Queen' to live and die a true Roman Catholic.'

Book Synopsis The Irish Military College by : Tom Hodson
Download or read book The Irish Military College written by Tom Hodson and published by . This book was released on 2016-09-07 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its establishment in 1930 the Irish Military College has had a vital influence on not only the Defence Forces but on the nation. It has formed all of the nation's commissioned officers, many of whom have achieved distinction both within and outside of the Defence Forces. The story of this relatively unknown national institution is intriguing as it has attempted to fulfill the roles laid down for it in 1923 in training and instructing officers and officer candidates. The task has not been easy, as the Military College has inevitably been subject to the many changes and fluctuations in the duties, roles and fortunes of the wider Defence Forces. In this book Colonel Tom Hodson, a former instructor in the Military College and a graduate of École de Guerre, Paris, charts its history. He recounts how from its early predecessor, the Army School of Instruction, the Military College has repeatedly re-invented itself, culminating in the requirement for today's modern institution to embrace and impart instruction based on the needs of the Irish Defence Forces and the procedures of European and NATO armies.
