Reorganized January 23, 1863, by consolidating Davis' Tennessee Cavalry Battalion and four companies from Murray's Cavalry Regiment, its ten companies contained men recruited in the counties of Marshall, Sullivan, Smith, Wilson, Cannon, Rutherford, Hamilton, Fentress, Davidson, DeKalb, and Sumner. After Murfreesboro the 8th fought at Chickamauga and the Atlanta Campaign. They were in central Tennessee in the late fall of 1864, then in South Carolina by mid Febuary, 1865 to participate in the Battle of Aiken. They ended the war in North Carolina, surrendering with Johnston's army. The 5th Cavalry confronted the Federals in Mississippi, Kentucky, West Tennessee, and Alabama. Companies C, D, E, H, and K were captured at Selma in April, 1865, and the remaining companies were included in the surrender of the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana.

Book excerpt: The Tennessee 5th Infantry Regiment was organized for State service May 20, 1861; mustered Confederate service August 9, 1861; reorganized May 6, 1862; consolidated with 4th Tennessee Infantry Regiment December, 1862; merged into 3rd Consolidated Tennessee Infantry Regiment April 9, 1865; paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina. The Tennessee 5th Infantry Regiment was recruited in Henry and Benton counties. The unit fought at New Madrid, Shiloh, and Perryville before being assigned to Strahl's, Stewart's, and Palmer's Brigade, Army of Tennessee. During December, 1862, it was reduced to five companies, and consolidated with the 4th Tennessee Volunteers. It participated in the various campaigns of the army from Murfreesboro to Atlanta, returned to Tennessee with Hood, and was active in North Carolina. This regiment lost 8 killed, 68 wounded, and 12 missing at Perryville, and the 4th/5th reported 76 casualties at Murfreesboro, 33 at Chickamauga, and 63 at Missionary Ridge. In December, 1863, the 5th totaled 167 men and 106 arms, but only a remnant surrendered on April 26, 1865. Companies Company A - Captain B.B. Bunch Jr., William H. Wilson. Men from Henry County. "I," 18th (19th) Regiment and some of the men also served in this organization. Co. "G." Some of the men later served in 18th (19th) Regiment. Co. "H." Nothing is known as to subsequent fate of this company; probably disbanded and men distributed to other companies. Prisoner of war records showed men from Hardeman, Hardin, Henderson, Madison and McNairy Counties.
