It fought with the Army of Northern Virginia at Second Manassas, South Mountain, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Brandy Station, Second Winchester, Upperville, Gettysburg, Bristoe Mine Run Todd's Tavern The Wilderness, Ground Squirrel Church, and Brooks' Church. In May, 1864, the Infantry Battalion of Hampton's South Carolina Legion was mounted and united with the 2nd Cavalry. It was then redesignated the Hampton South Carolina Cavalry Legion. After fighting at Cold Harbor, it participated in numerous conflicts south and north of the James River. After Fort Fisher in January, 1865, the 2nd returned to South Carolina in time for the Carolinas Campaign.

It was organized from extra companies initially intended for Orr's Rifles. These companies were organized into a battalion that was officially designated the Fifth South Carolina Infantry Battalion. The unit served in South Carolina, then was ordered to Virginia and assigned to General Jenkins' and Bratton's Brigade. It participated in the Seven Days' Battles and the conflicts at Second Manassas, Sharpsburg, and Fredericksburg. Later the regiment was with Longstreet at Suffolk and D.H. Hill in North Carolina. It moved again with Longstreet but did not take part in the Battle of Chickamauga. The unit was involved in the Knoxville operations, returned to Virginia, and saw action at The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor. After enduring the hardships of the Petersburg siege south and north of the James River, it ended the war at Appomattox.

Book excerpt: The South Carolina 19th Infantry Regiment was organized during the winter of 1861-1862. It, along with the 18th was created as the last of the units formed in 1861 and did not participate in the early deployment. The 19th was involved the reorganization of the troops in the spring of 1862. They then moved to Mississippi, then to Kentucky where it saw action at Munfordsville. The 19th served with the Army of Tennessee from Murfreesboro to Atlanta, fought with Hood in Tennessee, and was active in the South Carolina Campaign and the North Carolina operations. The regiment lost 8 killed and 72 wounded at Murfreesboro, and the 10th/19th sustained 236 casualties at Chickamauga and totaled 436 men and 293 arms in December, 1863. During the Atlanta Campaign, July 22-28, the 19th reported 12 killed, 60 wounded, and 25 missing, and there were 9 killed, 34 wounded, and 8 missing at Ezra Church. It surrendered on April 26, 1865, with 76 men.

Frémont, commander of the Western Department of the U.S. Army, headquartered at St. Louis, Missouri. The regiment was organized by Captain Lewis Merrill, a regular Army officer and a veteran of the prewar U.S. 2nd Dragoons. Serving as a Colonel of Volunteers, Merrill organized companies of volunteers from Missouri and other western states at St. Louis's Benton Barracks. Formerly: Beall's Battalion, Alabama Cavalry, Brewer's Battalion Alabama Cavalry Mississippi 4th Cavalry Battalion (Baskerville's). In records of the Battle of Shiloh it is called "Alabama and Mississippi Battalion Confederate Cavalry." Previous to that it was called "Pope Walker Battalion Mississippi Cavalry," and even then contained at least one Alabama company...that of the McCaa Rangers from Pickens County. The regiment fought at Shiloh, Blackland, Murfreesboro, Shelbyville, Chickamauga, protracted engagement near Dalton on May 1864, Dalton/ Atlanta campaign, Jonesboro, Stoneman's Raid, Wheelers raid into Tennessee, Saltville, Montgomery during Wilsons Alabama Raid, and the pursuit of Sherman into the Carolinas. The regiment was split in 1864 explaining what appears to be a conflict...all companies except F, G, and H are found on the list of parolees in North Carolina. Book excerpt: In February 1860 the commissioned officers of The Georgia Hussars, The Effingham Troop, The Liberty Independent Troop, Liberty Guards, Bryan Troop, and McIntosh Light Dragoons, met in Savannah for the purpose of organizing a Regiment of Cavalry. The group went as far as electing a Colonel and Lieutenant Colonel. The attempt to organize a regiment was a failure. In October 1861 the Liberty Independent Troop, The Liberty Guards, McIntosh Light Dragoons, and The Lamar Rifles organized into the 1st Battalion Georgia Cavalry.The Effingham Hussars, The Screven Troop, The Bulloch Troop, The Georgia Hussars, The Chatham Light Horse, and the Blue Cap Cavalry organized as the 2nd Battalion Georgia Cavalry in April 1862.The 2nd Battalion was stationed at Savannah, Isle of Hope, Skidaway Island, and Charleston, South Carolina. This battalion saw action in light skirmishing along the South Carolina & Georgia coast. On January 20, 1863 the 5th Georgia Cavalry was officially organized by consolidation of the 1st and 2nd Battalions of Georgia Cavalry by Special Order # 20, issued by the War Department of the Confederacy. Not officially formed until January 1863, planning had been preceding since the failed attempt at organizing a regiment in 1860. The regimental flag is dated 1862, and at least one letter written on March 20, 1862, has a return address of Wm. M. Henderson, 2nd Battalion 5 GA Cavalry, Savannah, Ga. It appears at least some troopers in the 2nd Battalion were referring to the unit as the 5th Georgia in early 1862. The 5th Georgia Cavalry saw action from Florida to Virginia, ending service in North Carolina, on April 26, 1865. It was made up of men of the 8th South Carolina Cavalry Battalion and new recruits from Marion, Colleton, Beaufort, Barnwell, and Calhoun counties. The 3rd Cavalry was assigned to the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, and confronted the Federals in various conflicts in South Carolina. Much of the time it did not serve as one command but in detachments of one, two, five, or six companies. One detachment was involved in the defense of Savannah, then the regiment saw action in the campaign of the Carolinas. It surrendered with the Army of Tennessee. Companies Company A. - Marion County. Book excerpt: In response to a call from President Davis, about the 1st of July, 1861, a large number of infantry companies, from all quarters of South Carolina, rendevoused at Columbia, South Carolina. Here they were placed in a camp of instruction, at Lightwoodknot Springs, about five miles from Columbia, and allowed to arrange themselves in regiments of ten companies and elect field-officers. The second regiment so formed was numbered as the Thirteenth South Carolina volunteers. After an initial stint in South Carolina, the 13th transferred to Virginia and fought throughout the war there as a part of General Gregg's, then McGowan's Brigade.
