Book excerpt: "Sir Nathaniel William Wraxall, 1st Baronet (8 April 1751 ? 7 November 1831) was an English author....He visited Portugal and was presented to the court, of which he gives a curious account in his Historical Memoirs; and in the north of Europe he made the acquaintance of several Danish nobles who had been exiled for their support of the deposed Queen Caroline Matilda, sister of George III. Wraxall at their suggestion undertook to endeavour to persuade the king to act on her behalf. He was able to secure an interview with her at Zell in September 1774. His exertions are told in his Posthumous Memoirs. As the queen died on 11 May 1775, his schemes came to nothing and he complained that he was out-of-pocket, but George III took no notice of him for some time."--Wikipedia.

The queen, the regent, and the princesses of the royal family, far from being satis fied with a portrait of George the Third, which, if it errs, can only be censured for presenting a too favourable likeness, were incensed at the freedom with which I had commented on the peace of 1763, aswell as at the personal disclosures respecting the king himself, scattered throughout the memoirs. As little did the admirers or fol lowers of Pitt approve my picture of that minister, though, in my opinion, rather a flattering resemblance: while Fox's partisans exhi bited the most violent resentment at my strictures on his moral, as well as on his political character. The remarks of Dr. Routh and Miss Strickland 2, of Lord Macaulay, Professor Von Ranke, and Dr. Osmund Airy, have emphasized the fact that there exist in the British Museum fragments of Dr. Burnet's History, derived from an original version which differs in many respects from the text as eventually published. The observations of Von Ranke, notwithstanding their value, were in one respect unfortunate; his report has been erroneously accepted as exhaustive; and, despite his own ardently expressed aspiration for a complete edition of the manuscript, it has been assumed that he had noticed the chief differences between the early version and the received text. As a matter of fact the quotations of the distinguished German refer exclusively to two important passages; he states specifically that he became acquainted with the document very late in the progress of his monumental work; and his language leaves us in doubt whether he had ever seen either the original papers or a complete transcript.
