Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Hand-Book of the Reformed Church in the United States But grand as is the sunrise on the Alps, still grander was the sunrise of the Gospel in Switzerland in the days of the Reformation. It rose first on the top of one of the lower Alps in the upper valley of Einsiedeln, where Zwingli began preaching. Then it descended to light the city of Zurich with the bright ness of the Gospel. Then from city to city and canton to canton it spread its light; - Basle, Schaffhausen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Manual of the Reformed Church in the United States It was found, however, that at least one publication of this order was already in existence, and upon reflection and consultation he was induced to change his plan, and to prepare a volume consisting mainly of historical sketches illustrative of the history of the Reformed Church from the days of the Reformation down to the present time. Some of these sketches were, at the time of their composition, printed in "The Guardian," a monthly magazine of which the author is editor, and though not strictly consecutive they are inserted in deference to the wishes of partial friends. In its present farm the book is intended to serve a double purpose. While it furnishes reading for the family, it also claims to be useful as a book of reference by enabling the reader to trace the career of individual ministers and the chronological order of the meetings of ecclesiastical bodies. In the preparation of Book I., which relates to the Church in Europe, the writer has by preference consulted works whose authors have been members of the Reformed Church. Among these may be mentioned: "Leben der Vater und Begrunder der Reformirten Kirche," 10 vols., Elberfeld, 1857; Max Goebel's "Geschichte des Christlichen Lebens in der rheinisch-west-phalischen evangelischen Kirche," 4 vols., Coblenz, 1849; Heppe's "Protestantismus," 2 vols., Marburg, 1852; and Cuno's "Gedachtnissbuch deutscher Fursten und Furstinnen reformirten Bekenntnisses," Barmen, 1884. The author has also frequently referred to the writings of Herzog, Ebrard, and Lange, as well as to the more usual German and English authorities on the history of the Reformation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Reformed Church in the United States: 1725-1792 The present volume is the culmination of years of search. The author's previous volumes on the history of the Reformed Church of Germany were gathered in seeking to find the mater ial for this volume. In 1893, at the suggestion of Rev. Dr. Corwin, the distinguished historian of the Dutch Reformed Church, the author was led to write to Amsterdam to know what records of the German Reformed Church in this country were there. But the price demanded for copying them was so high that the matter was dropped. In 1895 the author visited Amsterdam and arranged to have the Amsterdam correspon dence Copied, but was somewhat disappointed at getting only two of the missing coetus' minutes. In 1896, at the suggestion of Mr. Henry S. Dotterer, of Philadelphia, he visited the archives at the Hague, and there found the m1ss1ng coetus' minutes, together with a multitude of other correspondence. As far as he knows he was the first minister of our denomina tion to see these treasures at Amsterdam and also at the Hague. Afterward with the aid of his esteemed colleague, Rev. Prof. W. J. Hinke, he was able to get these manuscripts Copied. The same kind of search was made in Switzerland, Germany and England with surprising results, until we can reasonably say that most of the early history of our Church is clear. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of the Reformed Church in America York, and to the several individuals who have allowed him the use of the steel plates belonging to them, and for other assistance; and especially to the sons of Dr. John Ludlow, to the daughters of Dr. Gosman, and to Cap tain J. M. Wyckofi', of Millstone, for the new plates which they have kindly had engraved expressly for this work. The writer regrets that Dr. Sprague's interesting volume, which should be in the hands of all our ministry, did not sooner appear. He was only able to condense a few lines from it concerning Revs. Moses Freeligh and Jeremiah Romeyn, as this work was going through the press. He had failed to obtain any sketches of these men. NO doubt some errors will be noticed, but these are altogether inseparable from' a book of this character. It is believed, however, that they will be compar atively few. The work is given to the public, hoping that it may subserve the interests of religion, by increasing our knowledge of the progress and development of the denomination, and leading to new and enlarged plans of usefulness and liberality. P. S. - We have learned while the book was in press that the efforts for the increased endowment of the Seminary have already resulted in a gift of from James Suydam, Esq., of new-york. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of the History of the Christian Reformed Church of America We cannot refrain from - nor do we apologize for - this little digression from the straight line of narration, since there are so many striking coincidences in the history of both the United Presbyterian and Christian Reformed Churches. Even the sobriquet of seceders has been awarded us, though a century later, in 1834, as the latter part of this sketch will show, and has been inflicted upon us until the present day, yea by brethren whom we love and who feel quite at liberty to boast the same godly ancestry as we Christian Reformed people do. Book excerpt: From the Preface: This hand book has been written at the suggestion of one of the most successful ministers of our Church, who wanted something of the kind for his Young People's Societies. It is dedicated to Christian Endeavor Societies, Brotherhoods of Andrew and Philip, Heidelberg Leagues, Sunday Schools, and Consistories, hoping that by it they may gain a more intelligent idea of the grand history of our Church. We need a revival of our historic consciousness. If we would make our people faithful to our Church, they must know her history. It is hoped that the sesqui-centennial year will aid in this. This booklet, therefore, has been published as a Coetus edition. Of course, everything is brief: but it is packed with facts, put in popular form so as to be easily read and used. Its price will, it is hoped, place it within reach of all our members. At the end are questions, so that it can be used as a text book by any of our organizations in their meeting's. —The Author

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church in North America But to give interest to the names, it was necessary to give the respective settle ments of each - ma task which, if it had been fully realized at the beginning, would hardly have been undertaken. Thus the Triennial Catalogue grew into this Manual which, therefore, presents a complete list of all the ministers of our Church, with their respective settlements, and the dates of reception to and dismission from each. To give completeness to the work, it was deemed necessary to add a list of the Synods, Classes, and Churches, with their respective dates of organization. That there should be no errors in a work of this kind, could not be expected. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
