Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Congregationalism While the first lines of Historical Congregationalism date from recent centuries, we claim that its principles are as old as Chris tianity; nay, more, that it is the ancient Theocracy. With a divinely modified administration. As Congregationalists, we believe, not only in the supreme authority of God's Word, but also in its completeness as a divine revelation and find in it our only rule of faith, and also the constitution and laws of the Church of Christ, which in our view becomes' a church of churches. It was only by a study of the Sacred Word, that saintly and learned men, in various places and at different times, learned those principles which good seed, planted by the Holy Spirit in human hearts, has raised up a noble army of confessors, heroes and martyrs, and has girdled the world with their churches. D. 250 to 1616. Much of it, consequently, is occupied with the history of the principles and doctrines now embraced by the denomination, rather than by the his tory of Congregationalists themselves. Though as a de nomination, we had no distinctive, organized existence um til near the close of the sixteenth century yet, inasmuch as some of our denominational peculiarities have always found advocates and friends, since the days of the apostles, - a very imperfect notion could be formed of our history, if these facts were entirely overlooked. But, in order to bring them out, it has been necessary to travel over a very extensive field of observation, and to introduce more of gen eral history than, at first thought, may seem strictly proper in a denominational work. The sources whence this history has been drawn, will sufficiently appear by reference to the margin. Original authorities have been appealed to whenever they have been within my reach and when they have not, the defect has been, in part at least, supplied, by comparing several second-hand authorities, and when it was possible, men of different views and habits of thought. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of American Congregationalism Toward the end of the last century Williston Walker, then Professor of Church History in Hartford Theological Seminary, wrote A History of the Congregational Churches in America for the American Church History series. Dr. Walker has put all American church historians deeply in his debt for his profound scholarship and his books have been standard. But great chapters in all history have been written in the last fifty years and there have been highly important developments in Congregationalism which now merit record and recognition. It has seemed to representatives of the Congregational fellowship, therefore, that the time had come for another history of their beginnings and subsequent fortunes and achievements. This book is the result. It has been written in collaboration, and the division of labor between the two authors is evident in its structure and organization. But some of the later chapters are of composite authorship and throughout the whole really demanding enterprise there has been, between the writers, a constant interchange of suggestion and mutual criticism. There is in the book some measure of repetition; this both the reader and the critic will note. That was inevitable, though the authors have sought to reduce it to a minimum. There are differences of opinion between all authoritative students as to the confused beginnings of English Separatism and Independency. The statements herein contained are supported by dependable documentation, but the specialist may find occasion for disagreement. All possible pains have been taken to achieve accuracy in names, dates, and facts. If there are still errors they should not, the authors trust, affect the general accuracy of the narrative. The authors confess their affection for the Fellowship of Churches to which they belong, their pride in its achievements, and their confidence in its principles. So much the critic will soon discern for himself. But they have not, they hope, permitted their loyalties to cloud their critical faculties. They have not minimized the more unhappy phases of early American Puritanism, nor failed to recognize the significant contribution of other communions to American religious life through any sectarian concern. They trust that the appendices and bibliography may be of service to students not only of Congregationalism, but of American religious history generally. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Congregational Churches: In the United States Congregationalism has always inclined to publication, and the number of works really germane to the history of the denomination is enormous and constantly increasing. The connection of the body with the settlement of New England and the opening up of the West has led to some treatment of the features of this story by almost every writer on the beginnings of the northern United States, and the intimacy which marked the relationship of the Congregational churches to the civil governments during much of their American life renders town and colonial histories, legislative records, and even personal journals scarcely less sources of religious than of secular history. Fortunately for the student of Congregationalism, a bibliography of works in any way related to the theme was prepared by the late Rev. Dr. Henry M.Dexter, and published in his "Congregationalism of the last Three Hundred Years" (New York, Harper Brothers, 1880). This magnificent list, the result of years of investigation, extends from 1546 to 1879, and embraces 7250 titles. Yet even this is not exhaustive, and a complete bibliography, brought down to 1894, would probably include at least 8000 works which might justly be claimed to illustrate the story of Congregationalism more or less directly. The present writer, in his "Creeds and Platforms of Congregationalism" (New York, Charles Scribner's Sons, 1893), has given extended bibliographies of the leading Congregational symbols and of the discussions out of which they have grown. No one library includes all Congregational literature; but the student will find large collections in the possession of the Congregational Library at Boston, of Yale University (Dr. Dexter's own library), of the Massachusetts Historical Society or of the Public Library (Prince Library) at Boston, and of the American Antiquarian Society at Worcester. Smaller collections of value are those of the Connecticut Historical Society at Hartford, of Andover Theological Seminary, and of Union Theological Seminary. The following list is presented merely as suggestive of works of special importance for Congregational History. Declarations On Faith And Polity. A True Description out of the Word of God, of the Visible Church. [Dort], 1589. (The first Declaration of the London-Amsterdam Church.) A True Confession of the Faith, and Humble Acknowledgment be the Alegeance, which wee hir Maiesties Subjects, falsely called Brownists, doo hould tcnn ards God, and yeild to hir Majestie and all other that are over us in the Lord. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of English Congregationalism Not very long before his death, my father spoke to me of the work that he was leaving unfinished, and said that he wished his History of English Congregationalism to be published, if it could be done. How the book was first planned, and how the plan was altered, has been told elsewhere, and there is no need to repeat the story. The book began as a manual; but it grew in size and scope - as books are apt to grow; and it would not be compressed into a couple of hundred pages. It was to have been written for the Congregational Union; but the author preferred to speak for himself, free from all responsibility to others. During the later years of his life he gave to the task what strength and leisure were left him. Much of the ground to be traversed was already familiar. Church history, and the history of the Congregational Churches in particular, had been his lifelong study. The earliest of his public utterances to attract attention had dealt with the Ejection of 1662. And in the years that followed - the period of energy and strength - he had set himself to revive and to enforce the theory of the Church on which the Congregational polity is built. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Congregationalism Indeed, the history Of every nation is to that nation a Bible, a book which ought to be studied with unfailing enthusiasm and religious care. In the experience Of a people, God's character is revealed and his will concerning that people is made increasingly clear. Every nation will be strong in proportion to its willingness to gather up the lessons which preceding generations have worked out, and to drink in the spirit Of 'the mighty men who have made the nation what it is. I wonder if we Americans are studying our history as we ought to study it. DO we earnestly teach it to our children in our homes, does it hold the place in our schools which it ought to hold, is it used in the Christian pulpit as frequently and effectively as it ought to be used by the men who are the ordained leaders Of a people who, like the Hebrews, are also a peculiar people and to whom God has entrusted a mission to mankind? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The National Council of Congregational Churches of the United States In the memorable trip over sea in July, 1891, on the fated "City of Chicago," which bore the delegates of America to the First International Council in London, it was my good fortune to occupy a stateroom with Rev. Alonzo H. Quint. This privilege gave much time for happy converse, which was especially valuable to me, a young man. The polity of the Congregational Churches was our favorite theme. And with the great meeting, to which we both journeyed as delegates, before us, it was natural that the Council, its history and function, should have been uppermost in our minds. One day, he turned and said in his emphatic way, "You should write a history of the National Council." My work as Missionary Superintendent for several years in the West had indeed kept the polity of the churches ever before me. The genial doctor's request was not forgotten. With each recurring session since, articles have been prepared by request for our acknowledged denominational journals, which have received far greater commendation than their merit deserved. At the last session, a pamphlet was prepared; and, though a considerable edition was printed, it was immediately exhausted. Requests came from men whose judgment commands respect, in different parts of the country, that the treatise be amplified. The present monograph is the result. It has been my purpose to tell the history of the Council as much as possible in the language of its own decisions and acts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Hand-Book of Congregationalism The Congregational system has now stood the tests and trials of more than three centuries, and the world has been made to share the benefits of the fruit it has borne. The more its adherents learn of its origin, history and work, the greater will they prize its precious and apostolic principles. Should this volume contribute to such an object the author will consider it a rich reward. The writer and compiler of this book does not lay special claim to originality, for the facts set forth are gathered from many sources. It is manifestly impossible to give due credit to each historian and writer on these themes, therefore a general and grateful acknowledgment is made of most valuable aid derived from them all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Congregational Nebraska In preparing this little book to celebrate the jubilee of Nebraska Congregationalism, the work continued to grow from a brief sketch to the present treatise. The range of study was larger than anticipated; the sources yielded larger results; the plan of work was radically changed; and so a jubilee volume was undertaken. The success of my work I must leave the indulgent reader to determine. No one is more conscious of its imperfections than am I, but at the same time I am confident that there are some things in this volume that will be of interest to the churches, for many friends have kindly responded to the appeal for information and help, and what they have written has added much to the value of the book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Congregationalism and Memorials of the Churches in Norfolk and Suffolk This book owes its origin to the generosity of Mr. D. H. Goddard, late of Newcastle, now of Chester-le-Street, who, at the meeting of the Congregational Union at Ipswich in 1872, offered a premium for the production of a History of Congregationalism in Norfolk and Suffolk. The execution of the work was, without solicitation on my part, confided to me. Living at a distance from libraries, I have to a great extent been dependent on my own collection of MSS., books, sermons, and tracts; almost all those which are quoted, except otherwise indicated, being in my own possession: but, whilst the work has been passing through the press, I have made considerable additions of interesting and important matter from the Record Office, and the British Museum. I am indebted to S. W. Rix, Esq., of Beccles, for the use of his collections illustrative of the history of Congregationalism in these two counties, and for the encouragement he has, for many years, given me to attempt such a work as the present; to the Rev. Geo. Gould, of Norwich, for the use of MSS. which have been very helpful to me; and to the Rev. T. W. Davids, of Upton, for contributions and counsels which have been of great value. My best thanks are also due to the Rev. T. Hunter, for affording me facilities for consulting books and MSS. in Dr. Williams' Library; and to those pastors of churches who have allowed me to copy, or make extracts from, their several church books. I have taken these, rather than any existing descriptions of the churches, as the basis of this history. The history of the Baptist Churches is more of a fragment than I desired; it is nearly complete to the close of last century, but sufficient information with regard to many later formed churches has not been supplied. The facts here carefully gathered together may hereafter furnish occasion for a more general view of East Anglian Congregationalism, which the limits of this volume prevent me from adding.
