Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Historical Companion to Hymns Ancient and Modern: Containing the Greek This volume is printed, because none like it has lately been published, and many persons wish to possess the very words of the ancient hymns which were sung by their forefathers in the early British, Scottish, Celtic, Saxon, and Norman Churches of these islands. Every member of the great English Church must be proud of his lineage, and look back with gratitude to God for the heritage bequeathed to him by eighteen Christian centuries, and for the treasures which his ancestors created for their own branch, or acquired from other branches of the Catholic Church. The present book gives the words of the hymns to which generation after generation of Englishmen have been accustomed in the constant worship of the Great Head of the Church. It contains also the modern foreign hymns which, composed in later times, have been translated and used by many congregations. Had the Compilers of Hymns Ancient and Modern issued a second edition of the Rev. L. Coutier Biggs' work, the present Editor would not have attempted a task which others could have done much better. Book excerpt: D.H. Lawrence, writing of the poems that had meant most to him, said that they were `still not woven so deep in me as the rather banal Nonconformist hymns that penetrated through and through my childhood'. It is not easy to account for this, and most writing about hymns has not helped because it has concentrated on their content and function in worship and liturgy. In the present book the author tries to account for feelings like Lawrence's by examining the hymn form and its progress through the centuries from the Reformation to the present day. He begins by discussing the status of a hymn text and relates it to the demands made upon it by the needs of singing. A chronological study then traces the development of the English hymn, from the metrical psalms of the Reformation, through the seventeenth century and Isaac Watts to the Wesleys, Cowper, Toplady, and others, and then to the great flood of hymn writing that occurred during the Victorian period, together with the great success of Hymns Ancient and Modern. There are chapters on American hymnody and women's hymn writing, and sections on gospel hymns and the translation of German hymnody. A final chapter takes the story into the twentieth century, with a brief postscript on the revival of hymn writing since 1960.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here are the full original texts of 150 of the best loved hymns in the English language. Each is accompanied by a fascinating commentary, giving biographical details of the author (such as the Calvinist creator of Rock of Ages who once calculated that the average human sins 2,522,880,000 times); notes on the circumstances in which the hymn was written; and variant versions. Each hymn is prefaced by an urbanely written and agreeably subjective commentary with a wealth of anecdotes and a few ribald parodies. This charming book should also be required reading for all those responsible for choosing hymns in church. Ian Bradley writes with wit, elegance and charm and is quite exceptionally knowledgeable about his subject.
