Download or read book Hydraulic City written by Nikhil Anand and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Hydraulic City Nikhil Anand explores the politics of Mumbai's water infrastructure to demonstrate how citizenship emerges through the continuous efforts to control, maintain, and manage the city's water. Through extensive ethnographic fieldwork in Mumbai's settlements, Anand found that Mumbai's water flows, not through a static collection of pipes and valves, but through a dynamic infrastructure built on the relations between residents, plumbers, politicians, engineers, and the 3,000 miles of pipe that bind them. In addition to distributing water, the public water network often reinforces social identities and the exclusion of marginalized groups, as only those actively recognized by city agencies receive legitimate water services. This form of recognition—what Anand calls "hydraulic citizenship"—is incremental, intermittent, and reversible. It provides residents an important access point through which they can make demands on the state for other public services such as sanitation and education. Tying the ways Mumbai's poorer residents are seen by the state to their historic, political, and material relations with water pipes, the book highlights the critical role infrastructures play in consolidating civic and social belonging in the city.
Book Synopsis Fire Service Hydraulics & Pump Operations, 2nd Ed by : Paul Spurgeon
Download or read book Fire Service Hydraulics & Pump Operations, 2nd Ed written by Paul Spurgeon and published by Fire Engineering Books & Videos. This book was released on 2017-08-04 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding hydraulics and pump operations doesn’t have to be difficult, and it is of key importance to the science of fire engineering. Putting all the pieces together correctly so that the right stream is brought to the fire is essential to effective fireground operations. In the second edition of Fire Service Hydraulics and Pump Operations, author Paul Spurgeon, engineer/pump operator with the Denver Fire Department, breaks down the sometimes difficult-to-understand formulas of hydraulics and pumps into easily learned steps, taking care to explain the hows and whys of each formula discussed. Using an in-the-street, practical approach, Spurgeon teaches readers how to develop proper fire streams as well as how they relate to overall fireground strategies. He covers hydraulics and pumps extensively—from the properties of water to its supply to pumping to sprinkler systems and foams. So readers can put what they’ve learned into practice, Spurgeon provides both end-of-chapter tests and practice sets at the end of the book, complete with answers so that readers can check their knowledge. The second edition includes numerous updates and additions, including the Rule of Thumb chapter that illustrates how to perform these complex calculations while under stress on the fireground. This text meets the learning objectives for FESHE Fire Protection Hydraulics and Water Supply course work. Features and Benefits: • Summary of chapter formulas • End-of-chapter tests with answers • Practice sets with answers to further test your understanding

Book Synopsis Water Technology in the Middle Ages by : Roberta J. Magnusson
Download or read book Water Technology in the Middle Ages written by Roberta J. Magnusson and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2001-12-04 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing attention on gravity-fed water-flow systems in medieval cities and monasteries, Water Technology in the Middle Ages: Cities, Monasteries, and Waterworks after the Roman Empire challenges the view that hydraulic engineering died with the Romans and remained moribund until the Renaissance. Roberta Magnusson explores the systems' technologies -- how they worked, what uses the water served -- and also the social rifts that created struggles over access to this basic necessity. Mindful of theoretical questions about what hastens technological change and how society and technology mutually influence one another, the author supplies a thoughtful and instructive study. Archeological, historical, and literary evidence vividly depicts those who designed, constructed, and used medieval water systems and demonstrates a shift from a public-administrative to a private-innovative framework -- one that argues for the importance of local initiatives. "The following chapters attempt to chart a course between the Scylla and Charybdis of technological and social determinism. While writing them, I have tried to strike a balance between the technical and human aspects of medieval hydraulic systems, and to remember that beneath the welter of documents and diffusion patterns, configurations and components, ordinances and expenditures, lie the perceptions, the choices, and often the plain hard work of individual men and women." -- from the Preface
