Theor1es Of V1car1ous Pen1tence We know that the mediaeval Sacrament of Penance contained three parts -- Contrition, Confession, Satisfaction--and that the last of the three, with all its ambiguity, gave the watchword to the Catholic and Protestant theology of Atonement. External acts of satisfaction are transferable, whether justly or not. In parts of the mediaeval world, as Principal Franks records, transference of ecclesiastical satisfactions was organized into a branch of commerce. If, however, the emphasis were to shift from satisfactions to the more inward and spiritual elements of the Sacrament of Penance, we might have a theology of Atonement which, while still running parallel to ideas of penance, represented Christ as repenting and confessing sin on our behalf, not as bearing penalties or DEGREESwa DEGREESz-penalties by way of satisfaction. We meet with such a theology, but not all at once. It is formed slowly and gradually; and as first shaped it has little to do with sacraments. In his able Cunningham Lectures on the Humiliation of Christ, in the course of an unsympathetic and almost contemptuous reference to M'Leod Campbell's teaching, A. B. Bruce asks us to believe that Rupert of Deutz had anticipated Campbell. What he quotes from Rupert is a description of Christ on His way to baptism as an ideal penitent. Even if we make the most of that casual utterance, what claim has it to rank as a theory of the atoning death? Alexander of Hales1 makes contrition in the penitent a prolongation of Christ's passion; there seems to be in the context no distinct recognition of contrition or quasicontrition in Christ Himself. Franks finds such a reference, however, in the greatest of all mediaeval system-builders, St. Thomas Aquinas.2 Christ's pain...

Ransom theories. Bargain Jtheories, Satisfaction theories. PenaLthfiories, Rgcjoral theories, all have had their day, and all have added their contribution to the thought of subsequent ages. Only one of the old theories, the Moral theory, with its emphasis upon the manward aspect oT""Atonement, remained to receive a fuller and more adequate expression in recent years. It, too, had a contribution to bring, a contribution which the Church has been slow to accept. The receiving of that contribution is the special mark of the present day. No attempt will be made in this chapter to give a complete account of modern thought upon the doctrine of the Atonement. Writers upon the subject have never been so numerous, or so diverse in their conclusions. We do not as yet stand far enough away from them to estimate them at their true worth. One or two great treatises stand out as landmarks. Certain tendencies can be observed in different quarters. " This is the insight, he observed, which distinguishes the Christian faith from all other religions. It is a universal belief that God, or the gods, should come to help man in his mortal, human need. But this is not the God and Father of Jesus Christ. Even as Jesus in Gethsemane chided his disciples for their sloth in not keeping watch with him during his agony, so God the Father must look to His creatures for their faith and sympathy. Therein lies the basis for the Christian answer to man kind's perennial complaint: Why do men suffer? Not all theologians, believing Christians, or believers in a personal God can share this idea. Traditionally the Eastern Orthodox thinkers have adhered to the rule of apophatic theology: that is, there are boundaries of knowledge about God which the human mind, even when enlightened by revelation, cannot cross. So who can say that God the Eternal One is susceptible to what we call suffering? It is better to hold one's silence on so deep a mystery. Still others are loathe to acknowledge God's passibility for varying reasons. God is ultimate and perfect; therefore he cannot know suffering or other emotions. God is impersonal; therefore it is meaningless to ascribe personal, anthro popathic feelings to Him. Many angels may fear to tread on the ground of this most difficult question.
