Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Residents of Beacon, New York, are justifiably proud of a community that is rich in history and promise. In this exquisite collection of images, local historians Robert J. Murphy and Denise Doring VanBuren uncover the fascinating past of Beacon and the people who have called it home. The community's earliest permanent European settler was Madam Catheryna Rombout Brett, whose c. 1709 home is preserved within the city as the the oldest building in Dutchess County. Within the vicinity of the Madam Brett Homestead, two distinct villages grew: Matteawan, a manufacturing community at the foot of the mountain, and Fishkill Landing, a Hudson River port. Both villages prospered and eventually merged in 1913. Through the decades, the community was hailed as a model of a successful manufacturing center and became the location for several significant Hudson River estates. It played host to one of the longestrunning ferries in American history and introduced one of the first electric streetcar systems in the Hudson River Valley. Perhaps its most well-known feature was the Mount Beacon Incline Railway, a feat of engineering documented as the world's steepest incline railroad.

This exciting compilation will transport readers to the days of horse-and-buggy transportation, early American architecture, and elaborate Victorian attire. The images in this collection pay homage to the homes and headquarters of many eminent American statesmen, artists, authors, and activists. The hills illustrious and multicultural past is splendidly documented in this wellresearched and brilliantly-illustrated new book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1600s, William Blaxton set up his farmstead on Beacon Hill because it was far from the bustle of the city. John Hancock's uncle Thomas Hancock built his mansion on the hill in the 1700s so he could enjoy a rural lifestyle. In the early 1800s, future mayor of Boston Harrison Gray Otis moved to Beacon Hill because it was the new and fashionable neighborhood he was helping create. Louisa May Alcott, in the 19th century, and Robert Frost, in the 20th, lived on the hill because the literary set loved the neighborhood's picturesque streets and close quarters that made it easy to get together for conversation. The 9,000 residents who live in this small, urban neighborhood of Boston today appreciate its walkability, convenience, quirkiness, and neighborliness. The historic architecture, ever-burning gas lamps, rugged bricks, and one-of-a-kind shops prove that the best of the past can live comfortably with the novelty of the present.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upper Beacon Hill chronicles the drama and excitement of an intriguing and little-known community on top of Boston's Beacon Hill. Separated by the Massachusetts State House and Bowdoin Street from the hill's western residential area, the upper summit and its lower eastern slope formed a magnet for power and change in the century from 1850 to 1950. Period photographs from leading Boston institutions and museums uncover the community's celebrations, history, famous men and women, architecture, entertainment, and cultural and educational institutions. With its unique in-depth treatment of the area, Upper Beacon Hill has much to offer the reader. The classic architecture of Beacon Street's Boston Athenaeum library, Bulfinch's State House, and the Park Street Church is celebrated in period photographs. Historical sites are defined-for example, the chapel off Beacon Street that was home to Transcendentalist movement meetings and, later, to Boston's first French-speaking Roman Catholic church. Upper Beacon Hill follows the area's changing neighborhoods, including that of Scollay Square, and traces the haunts of notables Ralph Waldo Emerson, Louisa May Alcott, Alexander Graham Bell, "Honey" Fitzgerald, and John F. Kennedy. Residents and visitors, as well as history buffs, will enjoy Upper Beacon Hill's rare glimpse into Boston's history.
