Forty cars, each car carrying ten tons of freight, every day, for three hundred days, or tons each day, and would require four vessels of one thousand tons every day to remove it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Charleston An absence of tive years from Charleston, a city in which I had mided sixty-ilve years, must have induced many recollections that merit preservation, if they have lctt the traces of some that should be forgotten. The propriety of publishing a volume of Reminiscences embracing so long a tract of time, has been sug gested by some of my friends. There are many things of which nothing but vague tradition retains the memory, and which are rapidly passing into oblivion. To preserve these waifs that are floating on the stream of time - to rescue these fragments may not be worthy of the pen of the historian, but that they should have a local habitation, and, if possible, a permanent record among the memorabilia of lireh-will scarcely admit of dispute. In gathering the materials for, and compiling this volume, and giving it the stamp of authenticity, where my memory has failed me, in recollecting dates, I have sought support for my statements in the better recollection of others. As regards facts, I do not require any such adventitious aid. As time recedes from view, it is a law of nature that recollection brightens with the progress of years, while shadows gather over that which is more recent. C., With Some Account of Its Present Condition, With Numerous Engravings West on the American Continent. Two lines of railroad connect the city With the North and South, and only a few connecting links are wanting to give us three competing lines to the West, and these are being rapidly supplied by energetic men. Railroads in the city run down to the wharves and deliver produce alongside the shipping, affording thereby a prompt and safe landing of goods. The fruit, sugar, coffee, tobacco, and tropical productions of Cuba, the West Indies and South America, come directly to our port in large Shipments, and that the year round. Our harbor is never frozen; steamers and railroads never obstructed, delaying transportation and increas ing expenses. Steamers ply weekly, or more fre quently, from this port to New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Baltimore, Savannah, and other places. From early Spring, in February, to the fall, they supply the North with vegetables in great variety and of un surpassed quality. Strawberries, peas, beans, pota toes, squashes, cucumbers, tomatoes, melons, cabbage, and other table plants, are Shipped in immense quan tities from farms adjacent to the city. Thousands of tons of phosphate, both in crude rock and manipu lated, were sent off last season, and some of it was exported to Europe. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a fascinating discussion of religion's role in the rhetoric of American civilizing empire, The Imperial Church undertakes an exploration of how Catholic mission histories served as a useful reference for Americans narrating US settler colonialism on the North American continent and seeking to extend military, political, and cultural power around the world. Katherine D. Moran traces historical celebrations of Catholic missionary histories in the upper Midwest, Southern California, and the US colonial Philippines to demonstrate the improbable centrality of the Catholic missions to ostensibly Protestant imperial endeavors. Moran shows that, as the United States built its continental and global dominion and an empire of production and commerce in the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, Protestant and Catholic Americans began to celebrate Catholic imperial pasts. She demonstrates that American Protestants joined their Catholic compatriots in speaking with admiration about historical Catholic missionaries: the Jesuit Jacques Marquette in the Midwest, the Franciscan Junípero Serra in Southern California, and the Spanish friars in the Philippines. Comparing them favorably to the Puritans, Pilgrims, and the American Revolutionary generation, commemorators drew these missionaries into a cross-confessional pantheon of US national and imperial founding fathers. In the process, they cast Catholic missionaries as gentle and effective agents of conquest, uplift, and economic growth, arguing that they could serve as both origins and models for an American civilizing empire. The Imperial Church connects Catholic history and the history of US empire by demonstrating that the religious dimensions of American imperial rhetoric have been as cross-confessional as the imperial nation itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.
