Llego a enfermarse por el pánico, sentía que su corazón cada vez estaba más débil y su voluntad casi anulada. Laura lucha por superarse, recuperar la libertad y resurgir de las cenizas como el Ave Fénix. Cada día oímos y vemos casos de violencia domestica o de género, mujeres sobre todo que gritan cada día su angustia, su pánico y su terror al tener que convivir con una pareja que las maltrata. Este libro trata de ese tipo de violencia, la violencia oculta, la violencia silenciada, la que no tiene cabida en la sociedad, la que no existe para casi nadie. La ley de la violencia de género es una ley hecha exclusivamente para la mujer. Se condena la violencia contra la mujer, pero no la violencia contra el hombre. Es una ley que por el simple hecho de que una mujer denuncie al hombre ya se puede considerar a este como culpable. Es una ley especial para condenar al hombre por la única razón de ser o haber sido pareja de hecho o haber tenido una relación análoga al matrimonio.

Spanish is the main, usually the sole official language of twenty-one countries,} and it is set fair to overtake English by the year 2000 in numbers 2 of native speakers. This vast geographical and political diversity ensures that Spanish is a good deal less unified than French, German or even English, the latter more or less internationally standardized according to either American or British norms. Until the 1960s, the criteria of internationally correct Spanish were dictated by the Real Academia Espanola, but the prestige of this institution has now sunk so low that its most solemn decrees are hardly taken seriously - witness the fate of the spelling reforms listed in the Nuevas normas de prosodia y ortograjia, which were supposed to come into force in all Spanish-speaking countries in 1959 and, nearly forty years later, are still selectively ignored by publishers and literate persons everywhere. The fact is that in Spanish 'correctness' is nowadays decided, as it is in all living languages, by the consensus of native speakers; but consensus about linguistic usage is obviously difficult to achieve between more than twenty independent, widely scattered and sometimes mutually hostile countries. Peninsular Spanish is itself in flux.

Book excerpt: This volume explores the significations and developments of the Salsa consciente movement, a Latino musico-poetic and political discourse that exploded in the 1970s but then dwindled in momentum into the early 1990s. This movement is largely linked to the development of Nuyolatino popular music brought about in part by the mass Latino migration to New York City beginning in the 1950s and the subsequent social movements that were tied to the shifting political landscapes. Defined by its lyrical content alongside specific sonic markers and political and social issues facing U.S. Latinos and Latin Americans, Salsa consciente evokes the overarching cultural-nationalist idea of Latinidad (Latin-ness). Through the analysis of over 120 different Salsa songs from lyrical and musical perspectives that span a period of over sixty years, the author makes the argument that the urban Latino identity expressed in Salsa consciente was constructed largely from diasporic, deterritorialized, and at times imagined cultural memory, and furthermore proposes that the Latino/Latin American identity is in part based on African and Indigenous experience, especially as it relates to Spanish colonialism. A unique study on the intersection of Salsa and Latino and Latin American identity, this volume will be especially interesting to scholars of ethnic studies and musicology alike.
