Book Synopsis Rivers, Memory, And Nation-building by : Dorothy Zeisler-Vralsted
Download or read book Rivers, Memory, And Nation-building written by Dorothy Zeisler-Vralsted and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rivers figure prominently in a nation’s historical memory, and the Volga and Mississippi have special importance in Russian and American cultures. Beginning in the pre-modern world, both rivers served as critical trade routes connecting cultures in an extensive exchange network, while also sustaining populations through their surrounding wetlands and bottomlands. In modern times, “Mother Volga” and the “Father of Waters” became integral parts of national identity, contributing to a sense of Russian and American exceptionalism. Furthermore, both rivers were drafted into service as the means to modernize the nation-state through hydropower and navigation. Despite being forced into submission for modern-day hydrological regimes, the Volga and Mississippi Rivers persist in the collective memory and continue to offer solace, recreation, and sustenance. Through their histories we derive a more nuanced view of human interaction with the environment, which adds another lens to our understanding of the past.
Book Synopsis To Build as Well as Destroy by : Andrew J. Gawthorpe
Download or read book To Build as Well as Destroy written by Andrew J. Gawthorpe and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-15 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For years, the so-called better-war school of thought has argued that the United States built a legitimate and viable non-Communist state in South Vietnam in the latter years of the Vietnam War and that it was only the military abandonment of this state that brought down the Republic of Vietnam. But Andrew J. Gawthorpe, through a detailed and incisive analysis, shows that, in fact, the United States failed in its efforts at nation building and had not established a durable state in South Vietnam. Drawing on newly opened archival collections and previously unexamined oral histories with dozens of U.S. military officers and government officials, To Build as Well as Destroy demonstrates that the United States never came close to achieving victory in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Gawthorpe tells a story of policy aspirations and practical failures that stretches from Washington, D.C., to the Vietnamese villages in which the United States implemented its nationbuilding strategy through the Office of Civil Operations and Revolutionary Development Support known as CORDS. Structural factors that could not have been overcome by the further application of military power thwarted U.S. efforts to build a viable set of non-Communist political, economic, and social institutions in South Vietnam. To Build as Well as Destroy provides the most comprehensive account yet of the largest and best-resourced nation-building program in U.S. history. Gawthorpe's analysis helps contemporary policy makers, diplomats, and military officers understand the reasons for this failure. At a moment in time when American strategists are grappling with military and political challenges in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria, revisiting the historical lessons of Vietnam is a worthy endeavor.
Download or read book Nation Builders written by Benard Etta and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2013-06-19 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No nation was born great. Nations are built by men of passion, vision and wisdom. A poor nation is not necessarily a nation without money, but a nation void of men of ideas. Nation Builders are not necessarily politicians; for a politician to become a Nation Builder, he or she must experience real heart and soul conversion. Most politicians are merely opportunists, clamoring for greater portion of their national cake for self aggrandizement. True Nation Builders are treasures in every nation; and their absence is one of the greatest deprivations a nation can ever experience. Who are Nation Builders? How are they prepared for their mission? History is full of ordinary individuals whose passion, vision and wisdom expressed in the nation building story of their nations was superior to that of their peers. These breed of individuals are the true makers of history in every nation. They have their names written in the hearts of their people and the world. Researching on these special breed of individuals and uncovering the attributes, which made them the builders of their nations is what has made this work possible. In this extraordinary classic on Nation Builders, Dr. Benard Etta shares light on the qualities of Nation Builders. The book 'Nation Builders' provide answers to the question of who Nation Builders are and how they are prepared for their mission. This book takes the subject nation building from the palaces of politics into the streets, prison houses, schools, marketplaces, etc, with the aim of inspiring just everyone to become a nation builder in their respective nations. Dr. Benard Etta believes everyone is supposed to be a nation builder in the best way possible based on each individual's potential. No nation can progressively develop without the contribution of its people in nation building. Serving one's nation and contributing to its development is the greatest achievement of one's citizenship. Citizenship is not just a privilege for one to demand from his or her country, but a responsibility to contribute in making a difference in one's nation. I see this book inspiring a fresh passion and involvement in the hearts and minds of people the world over for the building of their nations.

Book Synopsis History Education and the Construction of National Identities by : Mario Carretero
Download or read book History Education and the Construction of National Identities written by Mario Carretero and published by IAP. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is history represented? As just a record of the past, as a part of a present identity or as future goals? This book explores how historical contents and narratives are presented in school textbooks and other cultural productions (museums, monuments, etc) and also how they are understood by students, in the context of increasing globalization. In these contemporary conditions, the relation between history learning processes, in and out of school, and the construction of national identities presents an ever more important topic. It is being studied by looking at the appropriation of historical narratives, which are frequently based on the official history of a nation state. Most of the chapters in this volume are educational studies about how the learning of history takes place in school settings of different countries such as Canada, France, Germany, Latin America, Spain, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States. Covering such a broad sample of cultural and national contexts, they provide a rich reflection on history as a subject related to patriotism, cosmopolitanism, both or neither.

Download or read book Nation Building written by Andreas Wimmer and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new and comprehensive look at the reasons behind successful or failed nation building Nation Building presents bold new answers to an age-old question. Why is national integration achieved in some diverse countries, while others are destabilized by political inequality between ethnic groups, contentious politics, or even separatism and ethnic war? Traversing centuries and continents from early nineteenth-century Europe and Asia to Africa from the turn of the twenty-first century to today, Andreas Wimmer delves into the slow-moving forces that encourage political alliances to stretch across ethnic divides and build national unity. Using datasets that cover the entire world and three pairs of case studies, Wimmer’s theory of nation building focuses on slow-moving, generational processes: the spread of civil society organizations, linguistic assimilation, and the states’ capacity to provide public goods. Wimmer contrasts Switzerland and Belgium to demonstrate how the early development of voluntary organizations enhanced nation building; he examines Botswana and Somalia to illustrate how providing public goods can bring diverse political constituencies together; and he shows that the differences between China and Russia indicate how a shared linguistic space may help build political alliances across ethnic boundaries. Wimmer then reveals, based on the statistical analysis of large-scale datasets, that these mechanisms are at work around the world and explain nation building better than competing arguments such as democratic governance or colonial legacies. He also shows that when political alliances crosscut ethnic divides and when most ethnic communities are represented at the highest levels of government, the general populace will identify with the nation and its symbols, further deepening national political integration. Offering a long-term historical perspective and global outlook, Nation Building sheds important new light on the challenges of political integration in diverse countries.

Download or read book Quagmire written by David Biggs and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By exploring the delta as a quagmire in both natural and political terms, Biggs shows how engineered transformations of the Mekong Delta landscape-channelized rivers, a complex canal system, hydropower development, deforestation-have interacted with equally complex transformations in the geopolitics of the region. Quagmire delves beyond common stereotypes to present an intricate, rich history that shows how closely political and ecological issues are intertwined in the human interactions with the water environment in the Mekong Delta.
Book Synopsis Nation Building in South Korea by : Gregg A. Brazinsky
Download or read book Nation Building in South Korea written by Gregg A. Brazinsky and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2009-11-20 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ambitious and innovative study Gregg Brazinsky examines American nation building in South Korea during the Cold War. Marshaling a vast array of new American and Korean sources, he explains why South Korea was one of the few postcolonial nations that achieved rapid economic development and democratization by the end of the twentieth century. Brazinsky contends that a distinctive combination of American initiatives and Korean agency enabled South Korea's stunning transformation. On one hand, Americans supported the emergence of a developmental autocracy that spurred economic growth in a highly authoritarian manner. On the other hand, Americans sought to encourage democratization from the bottom up by fashioning new institutions and promoting a dialogue about modernization and development. Expanding the framework of traditional diplomatic history, Brazinsky examines not only state-to-state relations, but also the social and cultural interactions between Americans and South Koreans. He shows how Koreans adapted, resisted, and transformed American influence and promoted socioeconomic change that suited their own aspirations. Ultimately, Brazinsky argues, Koreans' capacity to tailor American institutions and ideas to their own purposes was the most important factor in the making of a democratic South Korea.
Book Synopsis The Nation Builders by : Frank N. Schubert
Download or read book The Nation Builders written by Frank N. Schubert and published by . This book was released on 2004-12-01 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book marks an important anniversary in the history of our development as a nation. In 1838 Congress established the Corps of Topographical Engineers, an organization whose main purpose was the peacetime fostering of economic growth and national cohesion. This small dedicated group of officers contributed to the development of many aspects of the national transportation network-railroads, highways, and inland waterways. They provided maps for overland travelers and charts for navigators on our Great Lakes. By the time that the organization was abolished during the Civil War, it had played a major part in a period of dramatic development aptly characterized by one historian as a "transportation revolution." ROBERT W. PAGE Assistant Secretary of the Army (Civil Works)
