Escribió muchos tratados, pero sólo nos han llegado su Metafísica, dos tratados de botánica (la Historia de las plantas y Sobre los orígenes de las plantas) y sus Caracteres (en esta misma colección). La Historia de las plantas es una muestra del saber y la curiosidad enciclopédicos de Teofrasto. Se trata de un estudio sobre la flora mediterránea con multitud de datos, y presenta una interesante organización de su repertorio botánico; la obra era tan innovadora en su tratamiento sistemático y en la riqueza de su contenido que se considera a Teofrasto el padre de la Botánica.

As Iberian and Protestant empires expanded across the Americas, colonial travelers encountered, translated, and reinterpreted Amerindian traditions of knowledge—knowledge that was later translated by the British, reading from Spanish and Portuguese texts. Translations of natural and ethnographic knowledge therefore took place across multiple boundaries—linguistic, cultural, and geographical—and produced, through their transmissions, the discoveries that characterize the early modern era. In the process, however, the identities of many of the original bearers of knowledge were lost or hidden in translation.
