La historia de la matemática no data de Pitágoras, pero sin duda es este pensador -místico y racional al mismo tiempo- quien la dota del sabor que la modernidad percibe en ella. Este libro, "Historia de la matemática: Pitágoras y el pitagorismo", no es un libro habitual del tema. En primer lugar, pretende ser lo suficientemente cortés para invitar a su lectura a todo aquel que se sienta motivado a ella: no aspira ser solo un libro para especialistas de la matemática. No obstante, estos últimos encontrarán en sus páginas un suave trampolín que les facilitará la inmersión en aguas más profundas: el matemático que quiera conocer la historia de su disciplina (materia ignorada en sus pensa de estudios) tomará este texto como guía segura a textos de mayor exigencia conceptual. El matemático conocedor de esta historia, con ánimos de comunicar su conocimiento -es decir, aquel que tiene una visión pedagógica- puede utilizar este libro como un primer texto de la materia o uno de los primeros textos. El libro es lo suficientemente atrevido para proponer al lector resolver problemas, aquellos que -entre otros- los pensadores de la materia pudieran haber encontrado en su camino de construcción. Pero tal invitación es más una sugerencia que una imposición, de manera que aquel lector más interesado en la continuidad de su lectura que en retos técnicos no sienta la propuesta como una intromisión en su paisaje tipográfico. Los problemas tienen su propio espacio y el interesado sabrá dónde localizarlos. De manera que la invitación es abierta. Puedes entrar, lector, como acusmático o como matemático; solo tuya es la decisión. Pero no permitas que el prejuicio te haga privarte de los placeres de una lectura que mucho tiene que ver con el mundo que te circunda.
