Book Synopsis La historia de Ana Zeppelin by : Franny Murillo
Download or read book La historia de Ana Zeppelin written by Franny Murillo and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2012-08-31 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis The History of Physics in Cuba by : Angelo Baracca
Download or read book The History of Physics in Cuba written by Angelo Baracca and published by Springer Science & Business. This book was released on 2014-04-22 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together a broad spectrum of authors, both from inside and from outside Cuba, who describe the development of Cuba's scientific system from the colonial period to the present. It is a unique documentation of the self-organizing power of a local scientific community engaged in scientific research on an international level. The first part includes several contributions that reconstruct the different stages of the history of physics in Cuba, from its beginnings in the late colonial era to the present. The second part comprises testimonies of Cuban physicists, who offer lively insights from the perspective of the actors themselves. The third part presents a series of testimonies by foreign physicists, some of whom were directly involved in developing Cuban physics, in particular in the development of teaching and research activities in the early years of the Escuela de Física. The fourth part of the volume deals with some of the issues surrounding the publishing of scientific research in Cuba. Cuba’s recent history and current situation are very controversial issues. Little is known about the development and status of higher education and scientific research on the island. However, Cuba has one of the highest proportions in the world of people with a university degree or doctorate and is known for its highly developed medical system. This book focuses on a comprehensive overview of the history of the development of one specific scientific discipline: physics in Cuba. It traces the evolution of an advanced research system in a developing country and shows a striking capacity to link the development of modern research with the concrete needs of the country and its population. A little known aspect is the active participation of several “western” physicists and technicians during the 1960s, the role of summer schools, organized by French, Italian, and other western physicists, as well as the active collaboration with European universities.

Book Synopsis Economic History of the European Energy Industry by : Alberte Martínez-López
Download or read book Economic History of the European Energy Industry written by Alberte Martínez-López and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-06 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global climate change and the war in Ukraine have put energy back on the agenda for Europe in a way that has not been seen since the oil crisis of the 1970s. But the economics and business of supplying energy to Europe has a long and rich history going back to the nineteenth century. This book explores changes in energy markets, strategies, firms and investments during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The primary focus is on manufactured gas—the gas that was initially produced from coal distillation until new ways of manufacturing gas emerged after the Second World War. The expert contributors to this volume draw on their extensive research and utilise primary sources to explore a wide range of issues, including technological adaptation, market regulation, energy investments (particularly the role of foreign capital), gas consumption and supply issues. The case studies are particularly drawn from Spain, France and Italy, but the authors provide a comparative and global perspective to consider the wider context. The volume closes with an epilogue that brings the story into the present day to consider current issues affecting gas markets in the EU, including war, geostrategy and pipelines. This book will be of interest to readers in economic history, business history, energy history, the history of public utilities and modern European history more broadly.

Book Synopsis Electrifying Mexico by : Diana Montaño
Download or read book Electrifying Mexico written by Diana Montaño and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2021-09-14 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2022 Alfred B. Thomas Book Award, Southeastern Council of Latin American Studies (SECOLAS) 2022 Bolton-Johnson Prize, Conference on Latin American History (CLAH) 2022 Best Book in Non-North American Urban History, Urban History Association (Co-winner) 2023 Honorable Mention, Best Book in the Humanities, Latin American Studies Association Mexico Section Many visitors to Mexico City’s 1886 Electricity Exposition were amazed by their experience of the event, which included magnetic devices, electronic printers, and a banquet of light. It was both technological spectacle and political messaging, for speeches at the event lauded President Porfirio Díaz and bound such progress to his vision of a modern order. Diana J. Montaño explores the role of electricity in Mexico’s economic and political evolution, as the coal-deficient country pioneered large-scale hydroelectricity and sought to face the world as a scientifically enlightened “empire of peace.” She is especially concerned with electrification at the social level. Ordinary electricity users were also agents and sites of change. Montaño documents inventions and adaptations that served local needs while fostering new ideas of time and space, body and self, the national and the foreign. Electricity also colored issues of gender, race, and class in ways specific to Mexico. Complicating historical discourses in which Latin Americans merely use technologies developed elsewhere, Electrifying Mexico emphasizes a particular national culture of scientific progress and its contributions to a uniquely Mexican modernist political subjectivity.

Book Synopsis Your visit to Blanca, a village in the famous Ricote Valley by : Govert Westerveld

This book was released on 2015-04-06 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blanca is the ideal place for the slow movement, to enjoy the charm of its landscapes and to relax and live better. One cannot hurry the act of creation. Maybe this is a reason that we find in this village so many painters. They all need pace, slowness, silence to be creative and productive. I came from Holland, 40 years ago, and hated in that country the long queues of cars, the great haste of the people. During my travels to many foreign countries as a result of international business I came to the conclusion that there for me are only two places to live well: Haiwai and Blanca. This book has been written for you in ten lenguages: English, German, Dutch, Italian, French, Swedish, Russian, Arabic, Japonese and Chinese.
