Book excerpt: The first major historical overview of one of America's most vibrant Christian movements This groundbreaking book by Juan Francisco Martínez provides a broad historical overview of Latino Protestantism in the United States from the early nineteenth century to the present. Beginning with a description of the diverse Latino Protestant community and a summary of his own historiographical approach, Martínez then examines six major periods in the history of American Latino Protestantism, paying special attention to key social, political, and religious issues—including immigration policies, migration patterns, enculturation and assimilation, and others—that framed its development and diversification during each period. He concludes by outlining the challenges currently facing Latino Protestants in the United States and considering what Latino Protestantism might look like in the future. Offering vital insights into key leaders, eras, and trends in Latino Protestantism, Martínez's work will prove an invaluable resource for all who are seeking to understand this rapidly growing US demographic.

Book excerpt: 2021 Jim Parish Award for Documentation and Publication of Local and Regional History, Webb County Heritage Foundation Since 1898, residents of Laredo, Texas, and Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, have reached across the US-Mexico border to celebrate George Washington's birthday. The celebration can last a whole month, with parade goers reveling in American and Mexican symbols; George Washington saluting; and “Pocahontas” riding on horseback. An international bridge ceremony, the heart and soul of the festivities, features children from both sides of the border marching toward each other to link the cities with an embrace. ¡Viva George! offers an ethnography and a history of this celebration, which emerges as both symbol and substance of cross-border community life. Anthropologist and Laredo native Elaine A. Peña shows how generations of border officials, civil society organizers, and everyday people have used the bridge ritual to protect shared economic and security interests as well as negotiate tensions amid natural disasters, drug-war violence, and immigration debates. Drawing on previously unknown sources and extensive fieldwork, Peña finds that border enactments like Washington's birthday are more than goodwill gestures. From the Rio Grande to the 38th Parallel, they do the meaningful political work that partisan polemics cannot.

Book excerpt: "Mexican Protestantism was born in the encounter between Mexican Catholics and Anglo American Protestants, after the United States ventured into the Southwest and wrested territory from Mexico in the early nineteenth century. In Sea la Luz, Juan Francisco Martinez traces the birth and initial development of this ethno-religious community brought through the westward expansion of the United States. Using the records of Protestant missionaries, he uncovers the story of Mexican converts and the churches they developed. Those same records reveal Protestant attitudes toward the war with Mexico, the conquest of the Southwest, and the Mexican population that became U.S. citizens with the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo (1848)."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Since its founding in 1915, Southern Methodist University has had a school of theology. As a seminary in a university, the school has existed in a creative tension between academy and church; Grimes narrates the school's history from his point of view as one committed both to church and to academy, having been a leader in the field of Christian education in both." "Grimes ponders the role of the theological faculty in leading - or not leading - the university during its times of crisis and change. Thus, the history of the school of theology is set within the larger history of the university's challenges and changes. Though a history of SMU's early years exists, the present volume provides a narrative of that history not available elsewhere in the same detail." "The school of theology's history falls into two main periods: before and after its being named the Perkins School of Theology in 1945 following a generous benefaction by the J. J. Perkins family of Wichita Falls, Texas, which made possible the construction of its splendid quadrangle of buildings. Further dividing the school's history into the periods of service of the seven deans (Edwin Mouzon, Hoyt Dobbs, Paul B. Kern, Eugene B. Hawk, Merrimon Cuninggim, Joseph D. Quillian, James E. Kirby) and the long-term acting dean (James Kilgore), Grimes traces the development of the faculty, the library, and the curricula and describes the important social and ecclesiastical issues the school faced over the years. Notable issues explored in some depth include the enrollment of the first African-American students in the B.D. degree program, the controversies over the teaching of higher criticism of the Bible, the coming to the faculty of Albert C. Outler in 1951 from Yale and the rebuilding of the faculty by Cuninggim, and (more recently) the development of the intern program and the increasing presence of women and ethnic minorities among the faculty and student body."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: The question of how one can be both Hispanic and Protestant has perplexed Mexican Americans in Texas ever since Anglo-American Protestants began converting their Mexican Catholic neighbors early in the nineteenth century. Mexican-American Protestants have faced the double challenge of being a religious minority within the larger Mexican-American community and a cultural minority within their Protestant denominations. As they have negotiated and sought to reconcile these two worlds over nearly two centuries, los Protestantes have melded Anglo-American Protestantism with Mexican-American culture to create a truly indigenous, authentic, and empowering faith tradition in the Mexican-American community. This book presents the first comparative history of Hispanic Methodists, Presbyterians, and Baptists in Texas. Covering a broad sweep from the 1830s to the 1990s, Paul Barton examines how Mexican-American Protestant identities have formed and evolved as los Protestantes interacted with their two very different communities in the barrio and in the Protestant church. He looks at historical trends and events that affected Mexican-American Protestant identity at different periods and discusses why and how shifts in los Protestantes' sense of identity occurred. His research highlights the fact that while Protestantism has traditionally served to assimilate Mexican Americans into the dominant U.S. society, it has also been transformed into a vehicle for expressing and transmitting Hispanic culture and heritage by its Mexican-American adherents.
