Book excerpt: Excerpt from Histological Studies on the Localisation of Cerebral Function The major part of the present work was communicated to the Royal Society of London by Professor Sherrington of Liverpool University in November, 1903, the remainder a few months later. It was prepared for publication in the Philosophical Transactions, but the manuscript, when laid before the Council, was adjudged of inordinate length and the alternative proposal to issue it in book form, with the aid of a special grant, was made and accepted. For such generous treatment I am unable adequately to express my sense of gratitude. The research covers a wide field and the preparation of material has absorbed so much time and labour, that single-handed it could not have been accomplished; I have to acknowledge occasional help from my medical colleagues, but in particular I have appreciated the patient industry of my laboratory assistants. Many of the microscopic drawings which illustrate the text were made, with infinite care, by Dr A. C. Wilson, and the drawings for Plate 3 a were prepared by Mr F. J. Abram, who also kindly undertook most of the photographic work incidental to the research. The beautiful clearness with which their drawings are reproduced will be as much a source of pleasure to these gentlemen as it is a tribute to the painstaking methods and enterprise of the publishers. Means for the research have been supplied by the Lancashire Asylums Board, and it has been wholly conducted in their laboratory at Rainhill Asylum. For special material I am indebted to my friends Dr F. W. Excerpt: ...temporal gyrus concealed within the Sylvian fissure, the surface of which looks upwards and inwards towards the insula, several parallel gyri--sometimes as many as five--may be distinguished, running from before and laterally backwards toward the middle line. They have been termed by Heschl the transverse temporal gyri. Of these the most constant and best developed is the anterior. It springs from the superior temporal gyrus at about the middle of the fissure of Sylvius, and the sulcus which divides it from the succeeding transverse gyrus behind is often of great depth, and of such extent that it appears on the lateral surface, where it may not only indent but even bisect the superior temporal gyrus. This arrangement is commoner in the left hemisphere than in the right, and in males than in females. The anterior gyrus is distinguishable at a time when none of the other transverse gyri are recognisable, and even at the beginning of the fifth month it may be seen plainly as a gentle elevation on the lower margin of the still open Sylvian fissure. Let us next examine the various layers seriatim. (Plate XII. fig. 1.) Zonal Layer. Although evenly-medullated coarse fibres like those found in the precentral cortex are rarely seen, still the layer must be described as well-developed, and it is also more distinct here than in other parts of the temporal lobe. An abundance of fibres of the fine varicose type and members of the coarse variety constitute the layer, and a direct continuity between some of the latter and vertically placed fibres in the immediately subjacent layers can be proved. Book excerpt: This is the third edition of the translation, by Laurence Garey, of "Vergleichende Lokalisationslehre der Grosshirnrinde" by Korbinian Brodmann, originally published by Barth-Verlag in Leipzig in 1909. It is one of the major "classics" of the neurological world. Even today it forms the basis for so-called "localisation" of function in the cerebral cortex. Brodmann's "areas" are still used to designate functional regions in the cortex, the part of the brain that brings the world that surrounds us into consciousness, and which governs our responses to the world. For example, we use "area 4" for the "motor" cortex, with which we control our muscles, "area 17" for "visual" cortex, with which we see, and so on. This nomenclature is used by neurologists and neurosurgeons in the human context, as well as by experimentalists in various animals. Indeed, Brodmann's famous "maps" of the cerebral cortex of humans, monkeys and other mammals must be among the most commonly reproduced figures in neurobiological publishing. The most famous of all is that of the human brain. There can be few textbooks of neurology, neurophysiology or neuroanatomy in which Brodmann is not cited, and his concepts pervade most research publications on systematic neurobiology. In spite of this, few people have ever seen a copy of the 1909 monograph, and even fewer have actually read it! There had never been a complete English translation available until the first edition of the present translation of 1994, and the original book had been almost unavailable for 50 years or more, the few antiquarian copies still around commanding high prices. As Laurence Garey, too, used Brodmann’s findings and maps in his neurobiological work, and had the good fortune to have access to a copy of the book, he decided to read the complete text and soon discovered that this was much more than just a report of laboratory findings of a turn-of-the-twentieth-century neurologist. It was an account of neurobiological thinking at that time, covering aspects of comparative neuroanatomy, neurophysiology and neuropathology, as well as giving a fascinating insight into the complex relationships between European neurologists during the momentous times when the neuron theory was still new.

Although often portrayed as a discredited buffoon, who believed he could assess a person's strengths and weaknesses by measuring cranial bumps, he was, in fact, a serious physician-scientist, who strove to answer timely questions about the mind, brain, and behavior. In many ways a remarkable visionary, his seminal ideas would become tenets of modern behavioral neuroscience. Moreover, although he obviously placed too much emphasis on "tell-tale" skull features (mistakenly believing that the cranium faithfully reflects the features of underlying brain areas), he fully understood the strength of "convergent operations," conducting neuroanatomical, developmental, cross-species, gender-comparison, and brain-damage studies on both humans and animals in his attempts to unravel the mysteries of brain organization. Rather than looking upon Gall's "organology" as one of science's great mistakes, this book provides a fresh look at the man and his doctrine. The authors delve into his motives, what was known about the brain during the 1790s, and the cultural demands of his time. Gall is rightfully presented as an early-19th-century biologist, anthropologist, philosopher, and physician with an inquisitive mind and a challenging agenda--namely, how to account for species and individual differences in behavior. In this well-researched book, readers learn why, starting as a young physician in Vienna and continuing his life's work in Paris, he chose to study the mind and the brain, why he employed his various methods, why he relied so heavily on cranial features, and why he wrote what he did in his books. Frequently using Gall's own words, they show his impact in various domains, including his approach to the insane and criminals, before concluding with his final illness and more lasting legacy.

In the cerebral cortex this is no mean feat, since cortical areas are defined microstructurally in post-mortem brains but functionally in living brains with electrophysiological or neuroimaging techniques – and cortical areas vary in their topographical properties across individual brains. Being able to map both microstructure and function in the same brains noninvasively in vivo would represent a huge leap forward. In recent years, high-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technologies with spatial resolution below 0.5 mm have set the stage for this by detecting structural differences within the human cerebral cortex, beyond the Stria of Gennari. This provides the basis for an in vivo microanatomical brain map, with the enormous potential to make direct correlations between microstructure and function in living human brains. This book starts with Brodmann’s post-mortem map published in the early 20th century, moves on to the almost forgotten microstructural maps of von Economo and Koskinas and the Vogt-Vogt school, sheds some light on more recent approaches that aim at mapping cortical areas noninvasively in living human brains, and culminates with the concept of “in vivo Brodmann mapping” using high-field MRI, which was introduced in the early 21st century.
