Book Synopsis Réflexions Stratégiques Sur Haïti by : Luc Rémy
Download or read book Réflexions Stratégiques Sur Haïti written by Luc Rémy and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Roman Republican Augury by : Lindsay G. Driediger-Murphy
Download or read book Roman Republican Augury written by Lindsay G. Driediger-Murphy and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-07 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roman Republican Augury: Freedom and Control proposes a new way of understanding augury, a form of Roman state divination designed to consult the god Jupiter. Previous scholarly studies of augury have tended to focus either upon its legal-constitutional effects or upon its role in maintaining and perpetuating Roman social and political structures. This volume makes a new contribution to the study of Roman religion, politics, and cultural history by focusing instead upon what augury can tell us about how Romans understood their relationship with their gods. Augury is often thought to have told Romans what they wanted to hear. This volume argues that augury left space for perceived expressions of divine will which contradicted human wishes, and that its rules and precepts did not permit human beings to create or ignore signs at will. This analysis allows the Jupiter whom Romans approached in augury to emerge as not simply a source of power to be channelled to human ends, but a person with his own interests and desires, which did not always overlap with those of his human enquirers. When human will and divine will clashed, it was the will of Jupiter which was supposed to prevail. In theory as in practice, it was the Romans, not their supreme god, who were bound by the auguries and auspices.

Book Synopsis Frontinus and the Curae of the Curator Aquarum by : Michael Peachin
Download or read book Frontinus and the Curae of the Curator Aquarum written by Michael Peachin and published by Franz Steiner Verlag. This book was released on 2004 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The De aquis of Sextus Julius Frontinus is usually interpreted as either an administrative guide for the curator aquarum, or as a work of praise. It can be demonstrated, however, that Frontinus had another goal in writing. The book is more likely what we would call a political pamphlet, explaining a particular administrative reform, and encouraging those affected by that reform to cooperate with it. Frontinus wants to be sure that all concessions of aqueduct water to private individuals be made as proper grants by the emperor. In short, this curator aquarum is interested in regulating the flow of a particular beneficium, namely, aqueduct water, from the emperor to his elite subjects.

Book Synopsis Le Brutus de Cicéron by : Sophie Aubert-Baillot
Download or read book Le Brutus de Cicéron written by Sophie Aubert-Baillot and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-08-07 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Cicero’s dialogue Brutus offers a history of Roman eloquence from its origins and Greek roots up to the time of the work's composition (46 BC) in the late Republic. It forms part of Cicero’s response to the political and intellectual changes brought about by Caesar’s dictatorship and has therefore attracted considerable scholarly attention from a number of fields. However, scholarly discourse has frequently remained isolated. This volume addresses the need to look at Cicero’s treatise from an interdisciplinary angle and assembles contributions from scholars of historiography, prosopography, rhetoric, philosophy and politics. It thus puts forward a coherent and genuine interpretation of Cicero’s Brutus that showcases the significance of this text for our understanding of the final years of the Roman Republic.
