En six chapitres de longueur croissante, c'est tout un paysage de livres et d'éditeurs qui se trouve reconstruit sous les yeux du lecteur, allant des premiers imprimeurs dans les territoires qui formeront la Belgique jusqu'aux processus de concentration éditoriale actuels, en passant par les industriels de la contrefaçon, les grands éditeurs de bande dessinée et les pionniers du livre de poche francophone. Sans oublier les maisons de taille souvent modeste qui, vouées au roman, à la poésie, au théâtre, à l'essai lettré, contribuent à la vie du livre comme vecteur de haute culture. Pascal DURAND est professeur ordinaire à l'Université de Liège, où il dirige le Centre d'Étude du Livre Contemporain.
