Book Synopsis The West-African City by : Jérôme Chenal
Download or read book The West-African City written by Jérôme Chenal and published by EPFL Press. This book was released on 2014-05-08 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid growth, unmanageable cities, urban crisis, macrocephali... The cities of west Africa are no longer ‘plannable’ – at least not using traditional urban development tools. Without negating the importance of participatory processes in city creation, it nonetheless seems crucial to return to city plans and models, to what cities convey, and how they are built. But to understand the city in all its depth and richness, we must also hit the streets. The West African City proposes a dual perspective. At the urban scale, it analyses historical trajectories, spatial development, and urban planning documents to highlight the major trends beyond the plans. At the second level – that of public space – the street is discussed as the city’s lifeblood. By innovating approaches and testing new methods, The West African City offers an unconventional look at Nouakchott, Dakar and Abidjan, the three study sites for this investigation. The city of today, in Africa or elsewhere, must re-examine its many social, economic, cultural, political, and spatial dimensions; for this, urban research has begun challenging its own methods. This book is also the companion of Chenal's MOOC African cities.

Book Synopsis Gouverner les villes d'Afrique by : Centre d'étude d'Afrique noire (Institut d'études politiques de Bordeaux)
Download or read book Gouverner les villes d'Afrique written by Centre d'étude d'Afrique noire (Institut d'études politiques de Bordeaux) and published by KARTHALA Editions. This book was released on 2007 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Sustainable Intercultural Urbanism at the Service of the African City of Tomorrow by : Esoh Elamé
Download or read book Sustainable Intercultural Urbanism at the Service of the African City of Tomorrow written by Esoh Elamé and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-06-03 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most African cities are human settlements that lack the systems needed for effective land use planning. In fact, the disorganization that prevails has become so complex that the concept of urbanism itself has been called into question. This book highlights the need to restore urban planning in African cities through sustainable development and interculturality. Furthermore, it addresses the balance of power between urban planning and sustainable development and explores the historical and postcolonial aspects of urban planning in African cities. A case study focusing on the development of sustainable cities and neighborhoods in the M'Zab Valley is also included, as well as topics such as urban greening, climatic threats and the problem of state agro-industrial land transactions, which compete with sustainable urban planning. Sustainable Intercultural Urbanism at the Service of the African City of Tomorrow is a valuable reference for researchers and practitioners interested in urban issues in African cities. These cities, in particular sub Saharan cities, have long been excluded from any discourse on sustainable cities and urban planning; this book places the focus on these cities and acknowledges their varied urban realities. The intention is to spark a new debate on sustainable urban planning in African cities based on intercultural sustainable urbanism, which is key to thinking about and building ecological, intercultural, compact, intelligent and postcolonial cities.

Book Synopsis The Politics of Housing in (Post-)Colonial Africa by : Kirsten Rüther
Download or read book The Politics of Housing in (Post-)Colonial Africa written by Kirsten Rüther and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-06-08 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Housing matters, no matter when or where. This volume of collected essays on housing in colonial and postcolonial Africa seeks to elaborate the how and the why. Housing is much more than a living everyday practice. It unfolds in its disparate dimensions of time, space and agency. Context dependent, it acquires diverse, often ambivalent, meanings. Housing can be a promise, an unfulfilled dream, a tool of self- and class-assertion, a negotiation process, or a means to achieve other ends. Our focus lies in analyzing housing in its multifacetedness, be it a lens to offer insights into complex processes that shape societies; be it a tool of empire to exercise control over private relations of inhabitants; or be it a means to create good, obedient and productive citizens. Contributions to this volume range from the field of history, to architecture and urban planning, African Studies, linguistics, and literature. The individual case studies home in on specific aspects and dimensions of housing and seek to bring them into dialogue with each other. By doing so, the volume aims to add to the vibrant academic debate on studying urban practices and their significance for current social change.

Book Synopsis Historical Dictionary of Madagascar by : Philip M. Allen
Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Madagascar written by Philip M. Allen and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Madagascar, widely known as the "Great Island," is just off the coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean, but in many ways it hardly resembles its mainland neighbors. Its flora and fauna are quite distinct, and the folkways and culture of its population are intriguingly different from that of the continental countries. This revised and expanded edition fills us in on the changes that have occurred over the past decade while still covering the long and intricate history of the country. It starts with the earliest settlers, continues through the period of French colonial rule, and then describes more intensively the period of independence, with all its aspirations, failures, and renewed hopes. This is done in a broad introduction, an extensive chronology, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on significant persons, places, and events; ethnic groups and religions; and economic, social, and cultural aspects. Also included is a bibliography offering further reading.
