Les historiens de l'Afrique ont assez peu écrit sur les villes, surtout anciennes (précoloniales), ils ont laissé ce champ à quelques anthropologues et, à partir de l'époque coloniale, aux géographes. Il ne s'agit pas, ici, de « réhabiliter » purement et simplement une Afrique urbaine oubliée : le continent subsaharien fut, en très grande majorité, peuplé de paysans, à plus de 95, sinon 99 %. Mais, pour peu nombreuses et minoritaires qu'elles furent, les villes n'en ont pas moins été présentes, comme ailleurs, tout au long de son histoire. Qui plus est, elles ont joué - elles continuent de jouer - un rôle essentiel de creuset et de diffuseur culturel, d'accélérateur des mutations sociales et politiques. Elles ont, à leur façon, exercé une influence sans commune mesure avec leurs dimensions apparentes.
