Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decades following the 1973 publication of Alessandro Conti’s Storia del Restauro have seen considerable scholarly interest in the development of restoration in France in the second half of the eighteenth century. A number of technical treatises and biographies of restorers have offered insight into restoration practice. The Restoration of Paintings in Paris, 1750–1815, however, is the first book to situate this work within the broader historical and philosophical contexts of the time. Drawing on previously unpublished primary material from archives in Paris, Berlin, Rome, and Venice, Noémie Étienne combines art history with anthropology and sociology to survey the waning decades of the Ancien Régime and early post– Revolution France. Initial chapters present the diversity of restoration practice, encompassing not only royal institutions and the Louvre museum but also private art dealers, artists, and craftsmen, and examine questions of trade secrecy and the changing role of the restorer. Following chapters address the influence of restoration and exhibition on the aesthetic understanding of paintings as material objects. The book closes with a discussion of the institutional and political uses of restoration, along with an art historical consideration of such key concepts as authenticity, originality, and stability of artworks, emphasizing the multilayered dimension of paintings by such important artists as Titian and Raphael. There is also a useful dictionary of the main restorers active in France between 1750 and 1815.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The art of Rubens is rooted in an era darkened by the long shadow of devastating wars between Protestants and Catholics. In the wake of this profound schism, the Catholic Church decided to cease using force to propagate the faith. Like Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) sought to persuade his spectators to return to the true faith through the beauty of his art. While Rubens is praised for the “baroque passion” in his depictions of cruelty and sensuous abandon, nowhere did he kindle such emotional fire as in his religious subjects. Their color, warmth, and majesty—but also their turmoil and lamentation—were calculated to arouse devout and ethical emotions. This fresh consideration of the images of saints and martyrs Rubens created for the churches of Flanders and the Holy Roman Empire offers a masterly demonstration of Rubens’s achievements, liberating their message from the secular misunderstandings of the postreligious age and showing them in their intended light.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Ruben's age, as for the ancient Romans, history was valued for the lessons it taught. Rubens was deeply interested in history, particularly the works of the ancient writers like Ovid, Plutarch and Juvenal, which were full of exemplary figures. Yet unlike many Renaissance artists who merely sought texts they could illustrate, Rubens was familiar enough with classical writings to interpret them with originally and wit - always with an eye for the visually striking aspect. He was thus uniquely qualified to respond to the requirements of particular commissions with exemplary themes like The Continence of Scipio, The Justice of Cambyses, The Devotion of Artemisia and The Courage of Cloelia. Elizabeth McGrath recreates the context in which Rubens worked and casts new light on rarely discussed and misidentified subjects. Also included is a detailed analysis of the tapestry cartoons on the life of Romulus, now in the National Museum of Wales, relating the series to all relevant studies, paintings and tapestries.

Book excerpt: This publication on Flemish painting deals with those elements of the social and intellectual context which played a role in the realisation of any work of art, the concrete steps taken within a workshop in preparing for the production of the work, and the production through to completion of the draft. Part One, Concept, deals with those elements of the social and intellectual context which played a role in the realisation of any work of art. This section therefore examines individual motivations and the intellectual background of artists and their patrons, as also their institutional context and working conditions. Part Two, Design, examines the concrete steps taken within a workshop in preparing for the production of a work of art. These include the use of study materials, such as collections of exempla, as well as the stages of work required to make exploratory sketches, the finished draft and thence its transfer to the definitive medium to be used. Part Three, Execution, focuses on the production through to completion of the draft on its support medium. This may be done by the artist himself, or through one or other method of sharing the work, such as the employing of assistants or specialists. Introduction by Frans Baudouin.

Book excerpt: This volume is the second in the series devoted to portraits and in this volume is confined to portraits painted in Antwerp, cataloguing those in which the sitters are identified. Dr. Vlieghe examines the specific stylistic evolution of Rubens as a portrait painter, and shows how clearly the portraits reflect the general development of the painter's style. Of particular interest is the way in which Rubens merged the monumental sense of form and High-Renaissance devices that he had learnt in Italy with the traditions of style and iconography current in the Southern Netherlands. Especial emphasis is laid on the emblematic character of Rubens's portraits, especially those of his own family.

Book excerpt: A simple mission lies at the heart of "Rubens": to give the most complete picture of the great Flemish master as possible. No fewer than 163 paintings, sketches, and drawings by the artist, plus nine tapestries, are put to this worthy task. A faithful, objective understanding of Rubens arises, from his beginnings under the influence of his master Otto Venius and Italian art, right through to the end of his career, when he basked in a major Spanish commission. Rubens is at home in all genres, and all are represented here: from landscapes to portraits, from altarpieces to genre scenes, and historical paintings too, of course. Even the talents of the decorator are revealed in his painted sketches, drawings, and tapestries. For this publication, the master's oeuvre is divided into five groupings: Rubens' Beginnings, Rubens and Italy, The Middle-Class Patron, Official Commissions, and Secular Subject Matter. Through the inclusion of tapestries, particular attention is paid to the genesis of his art. Works such as "Descent from the Cross, Laying in the Sepulchre, The Stoning of Saint Stephen," and three altarpieces created for the city of Lille's churches and convents are included. From this impressive homage to Rubens, the general reader, connoisseur, and historian will all hopefully come to know Rubens better, and also be stimulated by the juxtaposition of works never presented in this way before. Published on the occasion of "Rubens," an exhibition at the Palais des Beaux Arts in Lille, France.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Paul Rubens was one of the most inventive and prolific artists in the history of western art. After his early training in Antwerp, Rubens spent formative periods in Italy between 1600 and 1608. This book explores the ways in which Rubens studied, copied, and adapted the work of artists such as Michelangelo, Raphael and Titian. A large group of drawings by Italian artists, many of which were owned by Rubens and extensively transformed by him, are illustrated. These works show how Ruben's dialogue with Italian art went far beyond mere imitation and how his copies and adaptations attracted the attention of scholars and collectors from his lifetime onwards. The intriguing book has been written by one of the foremost Rubens scholars, Jeremy Wood, lecturer in the history of art at the University of Nottingham. 21 colour & 78 b/w illustrations
