Book Synopsis Jean Chapelain Soixante-Dix-Sept Lettres Inedites a Nicolas Heinsius (1649–1658) by : Bernard Bray
Download or read book Jean Chapelain Soixante-Dix-Sept Lettres Inedites a Nicolas Heinsius (1649–1658) written by Bernard Bray and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis The Age of Conversation by : Benedetta Craveri
Download or read book The Age of Conversation written by Benedetta Craveri and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in paperback, an award-winning look at French salons and the women who presided over them In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, between the reign of Louis XIII and the Revolution, French aristocratic society developed an art of living based on a refined code of good manners. Conversation, which began as a way of passing time, eventually became the central ritual of social life. In the salons, freed from the rigidity of court life, it was women who dictated the rules and presided over exchanges among socialites, writers, theologians, and statesmen. They contributed decisively to the development of the modern French language, new literary forms, and debates over philosophical and scientific ideas. With a cast of characters both famous and unknown, ranging from the Marquise de Rambouillet to Madame de Sta‘l, and including figures like Ninon de Lenclos, the Marquise de Sevigne, and Madame de Lafayette, as well as Pascal, La Rochefoucauld, Diderot, and Voltaire, Benedetta Craveri traces the history of this worldly society that carried the art of sociability to its supreme perfection–and ultimately helped bring on the Revolution that swept it all away.

Download or read book The Sixth Sense written by Robert Finch and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1966-12-15 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has long been the custom to condemn eighteenth-century French poetry outright as generally unworthy of attention. However, in keeping with a recent change of attitude towards this vast and diverse body of literature, Professor Finch here undertakes to isolate a certain group of poets, belonging to the first half of the century, who may appropriately be called individualistes and who are in various ways characteristic of a definite and important trend of their time. The authors he has chosen were selected from the larger group of individualists because each provides, in addition to his poems, a complete statement of his own conception of poetry and of that conception which is common to the group as a whole. Since the works treated are comparatively unfamiliar the author has considered them from a historical and an analytical as well as a critical point of view. In addition he has devoted three special chapters to a literary historian (Evrard Titon du Tillet) and to three critical theorists (Jean-Baptiste Dubos, Yves-Marie André, and Charles Batteux) whose contemporary writings, while they may or may not have influenced the poets here examined, support, reflect, or confirm their ideas and practice. Texts of these poets are not easily available and the numerous representative quotations from the poems given in this book will be welcomed by the reader.

Book Synopsis Classics Incorporated by : Elise Noël McMahon
Download or read book Classics Incorporated written by Elise Noël McMahon and published by Summa Publications, Inc.. This book was released on 1998 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work Professor McMahon takes a new approach to interpreting the most canonized century in French literature. By viewing literature as essentially a cultural practice, she offers an unconventional reading of canonical masterpieces of the era (Corneille's Medee, Moliere's La Bourgeois gentilhomme, Racine's Phedre, and La Fontaine's Fables) to the extent that these works are compared to "non-literary" texts which focus on the human body. "Classics Incorporated" draws on extensive archival research into such unfamiliar historical sources as cookbooks, shopping guides, treatises on medicine and monstrosity, and dance manuals. Because of this insistence on treating literature as part of a given culture and historicising texts in a novel manner, "Classics Incorporated" stands apart as a critical study that can appeal to a diverse audience: those who are interested in cultural criticism, popular culture, cultural history, and critical theory alike.

Book Synopsis Acquired Taste by : T. Sarah Peterson
Download or read book Acquired Taste written by T. Sarah Peterson and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peterson explores a change in French cooking in the mid-seventeenth century - from the heavily sugared, saffroned, and spiced cuisine of the medieval period to a new style based on salt and acid tastes. In the process, she reveals more fully than any previous writer the links between medieval cooking, alchemy, and astrology. Peterson's vivid account traces this newly acquired taste in food to its roots in the wider transformation of seventeenth-century culture which included the Scientific Revolution. She makes the startling - and persuasive - argument that the shift in cooking styles was actually part of a conscious effort by humanist scholars to revive Greek and Roman learning and to chase the occult from European life.
