Book Synopsis Reference Guide to Christian Missionary Societies in China: From the Sixteenth to the Twentieth Century by : R. G. Tiedemann

This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive guide will facilitate scholarly research concerning the history of Christianity in China as well as the wider Sino-Western cultural encounter. It will assist scholars in their search for material on the anthropological, educational, medical, scientific, social, political, and religious dimensions of the missionary presence in China prior to 1950.The guide contains nearly five hundred entries identifying both Roman Catholic and Protestant missionary sending agencies and related religious congregations. Each entry includes the organization's name in English, followed by its Chinese name, country of origin, and denominational affiliation. Special attention has been paid to identifying the many small, lesser-known groups that arrived in China during the early decades of the twentieth century. In addition, a special category of the as yet little-studied indigenous communities of Chinese women has also been included. Multiple indexes enhance the guide's accessibility.

Book Synopsis The Brothers of St. Joseph by : George Klawitter
Download or read book The Brothers of St. Joseph written by George Klawitter and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2019-08-26 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Brothers of St. Joseph in 2020 are celebrating the 200th anniversary of their founding. They grew out of a religious revival following the French Revolution, but their noteworthy contributions to religious schools in northwest France have been overlooked, and their leaders have gone unheralded. Brother Andre Mottais was responsible for their early growth, and Brother Vincent Pieau made a name for the Brothers in their American foundations, chiefly at Notre Dame. Overshadowed by the Holy Cross priests who joined ranks with the Brothers in 1837, the Brothers of St. Joseph nevertheless must be remembered as significant to the Roman Catholic Church in post-revolutionary France.

Book excerpt: Since their arrival in Red River in 1845, the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate have played an integral role in the history of Canada's North West. The Oblates followed the Hudson's Bay Company trade routes into western Canada. They believed ardently in the importance of bringing the word of Christ to natives of what - to the Oblates - was a new land. Competition with Protestant missionaries added pressure to the missionary work of the Oblates. In recent years, the Oblates have acknowledged that their converts - radically torn from traditional native worship and spirituality - made a sometimes troubled embrace of Christianity. Guided by their vision of Christian society and norms, the Oblates went on to work with the Government of Canada to provide health care and education to treaty Indians on the prairies. Their strong identity as both French and Catholic helped shape both native and non-native communities throughout Canada's North West.
Book Synopsis Christian Souls and Chinese Spirits by : Nicole Constable
Download or read book Christian Souls and Chinese Spirits written by Nicole Constable and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do the people of a village that is both Chinese and Christian reconcile the contradictions between their religious and ethnic identities? This ethnographic study explores the construction and changing meanings of ethnic identity in Hong Kong. Established at the turn of the century by Hakka Christians who sought to escape hardships and discrimination in China, Shung Him Tong was constructed as an "ideal" Chinese and Christian village. The Hakka Christians translate "traditional" Chinese beliefs—such as ancestral worship and death rituals—that are incompatible with their Christian ideals into secular form, providing a crucial link with the past and with a Chinese identity. Despite accusations to the contrary, these villagers maintain that while they are Christian, they are still Chinese. Book Synopsis After Holy Cross, Only Notre Dame by : George Klawitter
Download or read book After Holy Cross, Only Notre Dame written by George Klawitter and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003-10 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While seven religious men founded the University of Notre Dame in 1842, the history of its early years is generally told from Edward Sorin's point of view. This biography of Urbain Monsimer makes new use of archival material to approach the university from a different perspective. From his earliest years in Holy Cross until his death, Monsimer was a fascinating person, brightly intelligent, suspicious of authorities, hard on himself and those around him. Arriving in America at the age of 15, Monsimer quickly learned English and acclimated himself to American ways. After eight years at Notre Dame, he was sent to California on an ill-conceived venture to look for gold. Left on his own resources, he remained in the West as a miner until poor health forced him to return to his father's farm in France where he died in 1860.

Book excerpt: Now revised and updated to incorporate numerous new materials, this is the major source for researching American Christian activity in China, especially that of missions and missionaries. It provides a thorough introduction and guide to primary and secondary sources on Christian enterprises and individuals in China that are preserved in hundreds of libraries, archives, historical societies, headquarters of religious orders, and other repositories in the United States. It includes data from the beginnings of Christianity in China in the early eighth century through 1952, when American missionary activity in China virtually ceased. For this new edition, the institutional base has shifted from the Princeton Theological Seminary (Protestant) to the Ricci Institute for Chinese-Western Cultural Relations at the University of San Francisco (Jesuit), reflecting the ecumenical nature of this monumental undertaking.
