Book excerpt: Parrott challenges the near-universal notion that the French civil war of 1648-1652 was a predictable, trivial clash between royal forces and ministerial modernity. Instead, he challenges notions about the rule of the Cardinal-Ministers, Mazarin and his predecessor, Richelieu, and their contribution to creating the 'absolutism' of Louis XIV.

Book Synopsis Jesuit Father François Annat and his Role as Minister for Religious Affairs in 17th Century France by : Brian Van Hove
Download or read book Jesuit Father François Annat and his Role as Minister for Religious Affairs in 17th Century France written by Brian Van Hove and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-12-19 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the tremendous impact of Jesuit Father François Annat (1590-1670), a French government appointee at Court. His religious superiors approved of his taking on this work for the Crown. He served as Minister for Religious Affairs, or Royal Confessor or ‘keeper of the king’s conscience’, for Louis XIV. During Annat’s confessorate of sixteen years, no internal conflict in the Gallican Church was so strong as the Jansenist controversy. Today everything seems different, as revisionist history has viewed Jansenism as an orthodox Augustinian alternative to explain the Catholic Faith, in contrast to the prevailing Spanish Molinism and Suarezianism, whose roots were in Thomism and Aristotle. There was intense internal struggle within the French Church to devise a legal formulary that might decrease the strength of Jansenism. The present work examines the life of Annat in all of its complexities, a life which may have been forgotten by history if not for the celebrated literary figure Blaise Pascal, who was a committed Jansenist and foe of François Annat.

Book Synopsis The Parlement of Paris After the Fronde, 1653–1673 by : Albert N. Hamscher
Download or read book The Parlement of Paris After the Fronde, 1653–1673 written by Albert N. Hamscher and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2010-11-23 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses how and to what extent the governments of Cardinal Mazarin and Louis XIV controlled the Parlement of Paris in the two decades after the civil wars known as the Fronde. The history of this prestigious court of law bears directly on the broader issue of the growth of "royal absolutism." Few historians have examined the resurgence of royal authority after the Fronde from the vantage point of traditional institutions, and no other scholarly work deals extensively with the activities of Parlement during this controversial period. This study reveals the methods, achievements, and limitations of absolutism associated with the Sun King. The book investigates the impact of royal policies on the way the judges acquired and transmitted their posts, the sources of their wealth, the social composition of their court, and their judicial and administrative authority. Parlement's political activities and its conflicts with the crown over issues of judicial, financial, and religious importance also receive thorough treatment. The author's extensive archival research indicates that many widely held assumptions about declining importance of Parlement after the civil war are unwarranted. Although Parlement's political activities gradually declined, this transformation was neither as complete nor as irreversible as historians have asserted. Parlement retained some voice in affairs of state, and most of the administrative machinery it could employ to oppose royal policy remained intact. Moreover, the crown failed to attack the sources of parlementaire wealth, and the judges freely enhanced their court's status as a social corporation.

Book Synopsis François Blondel by : Anthony Gerbino
Download or read book François Blondel written by Anthony Gerbino and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First director of the Académie royale d’architecture, François Blondel established a lasting model for architectural education that helped transform a still largely medieval profession into the one we recognize today. Most well known for his 1676 urban plan of Paris, Blondel is also celebrated as a mathematician, scientist, and scholar. Few figures are more representative of the close affinity between architecture and the "new science" of the seventeenth century. The first full-length study in English to appear on this polymath, this book adds to the scholarship on early modern architectural history and particularly on French classicism under Louis XIV and his minister Jean-Baptiste Colbert. It studies early modern science and technology, Baroque court culture, and the development of the discipline of architecture.
