Book excerpt: Sir James the Good, one of the finest soldiers Scotland ever produced, is sometimes better known by the name given to him by the English - the 'Black Douglas'. He terrified the northern shires of England throughout the reign of King Robert the Bruce and the Wars of Independence. When Robert the Bruce died Sir James, as his champion, was entrusted with his heart which he carried on the Crusades. David R Ross brings history alive as he tells the story of Sir James' life. Ross' research found him retracing Sir James' journey to the Holy Land and rediscovering battle grounds, providing a personal view of history. With a refreshing look at the subject, and featuring all new information and research, interesting maps, battleplans and photographs, this book will make Scottish history accessible and understandable for the casual reader, while delighting history buffs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was America founded as a "Christian" nation? What role has the Christian faith of many of its leaders played in the course of its history? How has Christianity affected American culture and society? This trenchant critique of the role of Christianity in American history highlights both the ways in which Christians have made many valuable contributions as "salt and light," and how they have caused a great deal of damage by trying to be "savior and lord." Believers in Christ have built one of the most "Christianized" countries in the world, with benefits for millions. They have also nurtured messianic aspirations that have spawned disasters for themselves and other countries. Generous in praise for dedicated believers who have reflected the character of Christ, the book is also unsparing in criticism of Christians who have, sometimes with the best intentions, failed to act wisely. In short, the reader will be encouraged by the many "triumphs" of Christianity in America, and sobered by its "tragedy."

Book excerpt: Harold Brown served as U.S. secretary of defense when the Soviet Union posed an existential threat with superior conventional force capability and a daunting nuclear weapons arsenal. No one could have been better suited to deter the Soviets during that most dangerous period in the Cold War. A physicist, Brown had previously led Livermore Laboratory and its development of the Polaris missile warhead. By age 33 he was director of Defense Research and Engineering, and he later served as secretary of the U.S. Air Force early in the Vietnam War. In the Carter administration, Brown reinvigorated the NATO alliance, promoted AWACs, increased U.S. conventional force capabilities, and developed a new generation of nuclear weapons and delivery systems. As a senior negotiator of SALT II, he also helped set their limits. Brown was the first American secretary of defense to visit China; as principal interlocutor he forged military-to-military relations. During his tenure, the Soviets invaded Afghanistan; the Iranian revolution resulted in the capture of American hostages; President Carter achieved the Camp David Peace Accords; and the Panama Canal Treaties—that still protect U.S. interests—were rewritten. Brown's role in each was integral. Star Spangled Security provides lessons from the past to inform the future: from Afghanistan to Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons; from international alliances and interests the U.S. needs to consider in a changing world to specific ideas for jumpstarting technological innovation that could boost American security and our economy today. Based on his twelve years of top-tier government service and nearly fifty more as a president of Caltech, a board member of a dozen corporations, the chair of recent, comprehensive studies of Chinese military capability, U.S. Intelligence, and technological innovation, and as the past chair and a current member of the Defense Policy Board that advises sitting secretaries o

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ÿQueen Margaret II of Scotland (1489-1541) has been all but forgotten in the story of the Tudor dynasty established by her father, Henry VII. Misunderstood and underestimated by many historians, she has been seen as a spectator to history, her motivations described as foolish, self-seeking, corrupt or treacherous. Yet the truth is rather different. After her husband, James IV of Scotland, was killed in the battle of Flodden Field in 1513, Margaret found herself fighting for her infant son, the future James V. A young and inexperienced queen without an army, she had to grow up fast. Through love or necessity, she formed alliances with several powerful and dangerous men, while dealing with the clumsy and inept policies of her brother, Henry VIII. Yet despite endless heartbreaks, deceptions and defeats, Queen Margaret proved that she had the determination to win through. This book tells the story of Queen Margaret Tudor and her many struggles to ensure the survival and birthright of her royal son.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When History Teaches Us Nothing is an early historical reflection on the recent Reformed debate over the late John C. (Jack) Miller's Sonship Discipleship Course. Miller (1928-1996), an erstwhile professor of practical theology at Westminster Theological Seminary (Pennsylvania) and an influential pastor in the New Life congregations of the Presbyterian Church in America, sought to minister to the jaded by accenting God's grace in the gospel. Gradually fears grew that his approach was spawning, among other things, an antinomianism and a revivalism antithetical to Reformed theology and piety. While not dismissing these concerns, Trumper argues that Sonship can only be accurately evaluated once it is understood in light of the practical loss within conservative Presbyterianism (i.e., within Westminster Calvinism) of the gracious Fatherhood of God and the sonship of believers. Drawing on his knowledge of the theological history of adoption, Trumper notes the significant parallels between Miller's protest of paternal grace and that of the early nineteenth-century Scottish churchman John Macleod Campbell (notably his stress on the life of sonship--Òthe prospective aspect of the atonementÓ). Trumper thus cautions today's Westminster Calvinists against repeating their forebears' mistake, which was to dismiss the validity of Campbell's protest on the basis of the problems with his proposed solution. By so arguing, the author provides a more balanced and constructive response to the debate, highlighting its potential for the biblical renewal of Westminster Calvinism. Essential to this renewal is the recovery of the Fatherhood of God and of adoption, the evening out of attention accorded the Bible's forensic and relational (specifically familial) elements, and the better reflection of the theology and tenor of the New Testament (especially). Only such a renewal, Trumper argues, can render superfluous further protests for paternal grace.

Trumper draws on his decades of historical, biblical, and theological research into the doctrine of adoption to offer a unique reflection on the Sonship debate—one with lasting implications for the Reformed tradition. Much the buzz in confessional Presbyterian circles around the turn of the millennium, the debate concerned the discipleship course developed by practical theologian John C. (“Jack”) Miller (1928–1996) and his wife Rose Marie. Whereas some attested to God’s use of Sonship in their spiritual rejuvenation, others questioned its Reformed credentials. Setting the debate, in pioneering fashion, against the backdrop of the historical theology of adoption, Trumper offers an assessment that is enlightening, evenhanded, and constructive. His fresh portrayal of the history of the Reformed tradition teaches the value of pausing before rushing to judgment, and is a reminder that the meeting of spiritual needs requires more biblical exposition not less of it. While addressing the points of debate, When History Teaches Us Nothing is, above all, a call to the church to recover the doctrine of adoption, and to the Reformed community to revive her creative orthodoxy, to recapture Scripture’s balance of the juridical and familial aspects of the faith, and to do so with grace.
