Book excerpt: Daniel Harris--a Vincentian of the Congregation of the Mission Western Province--taught preaching for the forty-two years of his priestly ministry at seminaries in Illinois, Missouri, Colorado, and California. Nearly every Sunday, Dan also preached in nearby parishes--and he preached amazingly. With a transparent love for the Eucharist and a keen sense of the biblical texts for each liturgical season, Dan nourished fortunate congregations with wit and insight into the Christian life as we live it today in our families and neighborhoods. Dan inspired seminary students and congregational listeners to understand, celebrate, and live their Christian lives with apostolic devotion. A Year of Vincentian Preaching collects thirty-nine homilies preached by Dan in St. Louis according to the seasons of the liturgical year. These homilies are beautifully crafted and worthy of reflective reading and prayer by listeners and preachers. A Year of Vincentian Preaching remembers a remarkable preacher and teacher of preachers to his listeners, students, confreres, and colleagues. It also offers a corpus of high-quality homilies for study by new and seasoned preachers seeking to hone their craft in biblical preaching and preaching the just word.

Book excerpt: Widely embraced by homilists and those interested in reflecting more deeply on the daily Lectionary readings, Bishop Richard Sklba's Fire Starters: Igniting the Holy in the Weekday Homily has served as a practical resource for preparing engaging weekday homilies for Ordinary Time. After much anticipation, Bishop Sklba and coauthor Fr. Joseph Juknialis now offer Easter Fire, a welcome companion to support anyone called to preach at Easter weekday Masses. Easter Fire provides the biblical citations and summary phrases for the reading and the gospel plus the refrain from the psalm each day. After each citation, the authors offer a series of meaningful insights based on Scripture scholarship, their own prayerful reflection on the texts, and years of preaching and pastoral experience. These brief "bullet point" entries provide nuggets of knowledge and inspiration that will stimulate personal prayer and spark homily possibilities for the preacher every day. Easter Fire will ignite sparks that can be enflamed by God's Spirit, to not only enrich the spiritual journey but to add light and warmth for the preparation of weekday homilies during the Easter season.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away’ (Luke 21:33) At the weekday Eucharist we read from sections of all four gospels in the course of the liturgical year. The reflections in this book are based predominantly on the gospel readings for the weekdays of the coming liturgical year, 2021/22, with occasional references to the first reading. They follow the sequence of the weeks of the calendar year, beginning on the 29th November, Monday of the first week of Advent. In the course of the liturgical year, the gospel readings present us with a significant selection of the words and deeds of Jesus from all four gospels. In and through these gospel readings we encounter the living word of the risen Lord to his church. There is rich fare here to nourish our faith life and to help us to grow in our knowledge and love of the Lord. These short reflections attempt to listen to the Scripture passages on their own terms, while showing how they can continue to speak to our church and our world today. Many people feel drawn to basing their prayer on the Scriptures, in particular the gospels. It is hoped that these reflections will serve as a help to prayer for people of faith. They may also be of service to priests who seek to offer a short reflection on the gospel reading of the day to their parishioners. In parishes where, from time to time, there is a Liturgy of the Word in place of Mass, the Minister of the Word might read the corresponding reflection after the gospel reading. On most week days, the same readings are proclaimed in the church throughout the world in the setting of the Eucharist. To read and reflect upon the readings for the weekdays of the liturgical year is to go on a spiritual journey with the universal church.

Book excerpt: This book is a product of diligent, conscientious and prayerful study of the sacred Scriptures by the author, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Okami. It is an inspirational book, highly enriching, sound in catechetical teaching and reflections that are expedient to the proper understanding of the liturgical daily readings of Cycles A and B, or Years 1 and 2. I sincerely recommend this book to all, particularly shepherds of GOD'S flock, who truly and really intend to "smell like the sheep." The book is worth having because of its expository and thematic content which is pastoral in its approach based on its scriptural focus, theological analysis and practical relevance to pastoral ministry and faith deepening. Rev. Fr. Francis Adeola Adeyemi, Ph.DLecturer, Pastoral Theology Department, Catholic Institute of West Africa (CIWA), Port Harcourt, Nigeria
