This book is definitely on the top of the must read list. The writer focuses his attention not only on the prayer of Jabez, but he also turns his attention to the many different aspects of the life of Jabez and how the struggles that he must have encountered could be used as instruments; showing others how they too could rise above obstacles and become more successful in life. Denrick's new book, Discovering the Jabez in You, demonstrates to the readers that even though a person may find his or herself in a very sorrowful and unproductive lifestyle, there is still no reason to lose hope. The choices you make today will yield its results tomorrow. Denrick also tries to express to his readers that the first step towards attaining a life-changing event is to first discover that there is a need for change. Praying to the God of Israel would be the next step, just as Jabez did in his time of need, then stand still and see the salvation of the Lord. The book also features many different personal prayers, which are solely intended to aid the readers to develop a closer relationship with God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens when “the rubber meets the road” for Catholic evangelization? Motown evangelization—an evangelization with wheels, an evangelization on the go, an evangelization with soul! Featuring contributions by several of the leading scholars on Catholic evangelization in the twenty-first century, Motown Evangelization: Sharing the Gospel of Jesus in a Detroit Style invites the reader to contemplate the meaning of the New Evangelization within the disorienting context of the postmodern and post-pandemic world of today. Numerous central themes are treated throughout the book’s potent chapters: the charity of Christ, the urgency of evangelization, redemptive suffering, liturgical sacrifice, the Black Catholic experience, parish life, the communion of saints, contemplative prayer, and practical suggestions for sharing the gospel of Jesus with friends and strangers alike. Tracing the contours of evangelization as at once merciful, urgent, sacrificial, diverse, and sanctifying, this book opens to the world with hope and healing. While oftentimes evangelization can stagnate in wishful thinking with little follow-through, Motown Evangelization encourages the reader to press on toward the finish line of faith wherein the end is the beginning, and the beginning is the end. It is because of the paradoxical twists that flood the life and teachings of Jesus that evangelization is ever old and ever new. Motown Evangelization will help to empower its reader to share the gospel of Jesus with renewed vigor and vitality.

Book excerpt: Terri Lynns inspirational story shows her fight to be happy in the midst of a living hell. Her two young sons moved away with their father. Devastated, without a will to live, Terri Lynn surrenders her life to God for the strength to carry on. Her story demonstrates that when God steps in, magic and miracles follow. Living on welfare amid shattered dreams, she had to choose happiness or die in sadness. After a few years, she awakened to new possibilities and set a goal. Once her goal was set, divine guidance took over and directed her, much like a navigation system. Before long, she was living a luxurious life with her sons, and her happiness level went over the top. Her gratitude to God for delivering her from her past pain to such happiness and success put her on a spiritual path, a journey within. Her message is simple: The decision to be happy, no matter what, makes everything feel better, and when you feel good, good things happen.

Book excerpt: The 28 essays reprinted here are arranged in four sections that offer theoretical, historical, educational, and community perspectives on the whole topic of literacy. In addition to their substantial introduction, the editors provide an exhaustive bibliography based on the citations to the essays. Kintgen, Kroll, and Rose see literacy as an extremely complex area of inquiry in which all aspects are interrelated, and they hope to avoid creating or perpetuating false boundaries within the field. The book's first section contains articles dealing with various psychological and economic consequences of literacy. The second provides an introduction to the development of literacy in different eras of the West, from its inception among the Greeks to the teaching of it in North America during the past century. The third section treats the teaching of literacy in educational institutions, primarily at the secondary and post-secondary levels. The final section discusses literacy outside the traditional classroom: the development of literacy among children and adults, the functions and uses of literacy in the workplace and elsewhere, and the identity and problems of those who have not mastered literacy skills.

Book excerpt: Prayer: The Believers Master Key explains that prayer is a process that connects man with God, the created being to his creator. This concept links earth to heaven, bringing the physical plane to the spiritual realm, and bringing the natural soul into the presence of the supernatural God. Prayer is the means through which those hungry for God can form timeless bonds with him. It is the key that opens the door of light for the blind to see, the sick to be healed, and for the weak to receive strength for exploits. Prayer can also be the spiritual magnet that pulls the helpless to the place of hope. The first real need of any serious Christian is to develop an unbroken, intimate fellowship with God. This can only be achieved through prayer, the proven medium through which believers of humble disposition, the penitent and redeemed of the lord, in sincerity of worship, enter into the presence of the almighty God. Simple as God intended this medium of communication to be, manin his pursuit for religion. and his zeal to humanize the divine naturehas introduced several unnecessary obstacles, thus complicating this otherwise simple concept. Prayer attempts to remove those man-made limitations that hinder easy access to God a guide that demystifies the art of communicating with God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The suggestion that the New Testament contains citations of early Christological hymns has long been a controversial issue in New Testament scholarship. As a way of advancing this facet of New Testament research, Matthew E. Gordley examines the Colossian hymn (Col 1:15-20) in light of its cultural and epistolary contexts. As a result of a broad comparative analysis, he claims that Col 1:15-20 is a citation of a prose-hymn which represents a fusion of Jewish and Greco-Roman conventions for praising an exalted figure. A review of hymns in the literature of Second Temple Judaism demonstrates that the Colossian hymn owes a number of features to Jewish modes of praise. Likewise, a review of hymns in the broader Greco-Roman world demonstrates that the Colossian hymn is equally indebted to conventions used for praising the divine in the Greco-Roman tradition. In light of these hymnic traditions of antiquity, the analysis of the form and content of the Colossian hymn shows how the passage fits well into a Greco-Roman context, and indicates that it is best understood as a quasi-philosophical prose-hymn cited in the context of a paraenetic letter. Finally, in view of ancient epistolary and rhetorical theory and practice, an analysis of the role of the hymn in Colossians suggests that the hymn serves a number of significant rhetorical functions throughout the remainder of the letter.
