I will protect Izzy O'Neill with my life.” —Becky Albertalli, author of SIMON VS. THE HOMO SAPIENS AGENDA Bitingly funny and shockingly relevant, The Exact Opposite of Okay is a bold, brave, and necessary read for fans of Louise O’Neill and Jennifer Mathieu. Eighteen-year-old Izzy O’Neill knows exactly who she is—a loyal friend, an aspiring comedian, and a person who believes that milk shakes and Reese’s peanut butter cups are major food groups. But after she’s caught in a compromising position with the son of a politician, it seems like everyone around her is eager to give her a new label: slut. Izzy is certain that the whole thing will blow over and she can get back to worrying about how she doesn’t reciprocate her best friend Danny’s feelings for her and wondering how she is ever going to find a way out of their small town. Only it doesn’t. And while she’s used to laughing her way out of any situation, as she finds herself first the center of high school gossip and then in the middle of a national scandal, it’s hard even for her to find humor in the situation. Izzy may be determined not to let anyone else define who she is, but that proves easier said than done when it seems like everyone has something to say about her.

He is brought into contact with a string of larger than life characters, from the officious PC Harden to the suave but mercenary barrister Grayson-Hayes. His experience holds up a mirror to the values of the modern world, where the unscrupulous, the feckless and those of a compensation culture mind set seek to prosper at the expense of the decent and honest.

He explains that these pieces are not categorized by anything else than "it simply means they are untethered." And, boy, are they! There are countless examples of introvert-extrovert partnerships who make brilliant products, create great works of art, and even change history together. But these partnerships don't just happen. They demand wise nurturing. The key, says bestselling author Jennifer Kahnweiler, is for opposites to stop emphasizing their differences and use approaches that focus them both on moving toward results. Kahnweiler's first-of-its-kind practical five-step process helps introverts and extroverts understand and appreciate each other's wiring, use conflicts to spur creativity, enrich their own skills by learning from the other, and see and act on things neither would have separately. Kahnweiler shows how to perform the delicate balancing act required to create a whole that is exponentially greater than the sum of its parts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book of anecdotes - a product of my reflections on both my personal and professional life as a young Tunisian female journalist, coming to work for the 'largest broadcaster in the world' and live in the big city, that is London all by myself. The book traces the Tunisia I grew up in in the sixties - few years after it gained its independence from France, where my parents and I belonged to very different worlds. I come from a traditional family and society where a girl - no matter how educated - only leaves her parents' house to her husband's. So, for my family to allow me that, was something totally unheard of. The book highlights some of the most impressionable experiences I had while working in the Bush House offices in my home department; on secondment to other departments or on work trips abroad for the BBC and other places. At some point and for many years, I was the only Tunisian in the whole organisation. This book also traces what I make of the changes that Tunisia has been through over the years, especially since 2011 and the beginning of what's referred to as 'The Arab Spring' that started there and spread like wildfire to other countries in the region. London is also the place where I met my late husband, the Pan-Africanist Dr Tajudeen Abdul-Raheem. We met by chance three times in three different places before we could speak and the rest as they say is history! I was probably the first Tunisian girl to marry a Nigerian. This book tackles the many challenges our union faced, the issue of identity for our two mixed-race daughters - something very rare back home - and for myself as a Tunisian - British or British-Tunisian, having spent longer in the UK than I did in Tunisia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can poetry embrace morality through focusing on metaphrasts? What is the relation between an allummette and the alpha rhythm? How come that money has turned into a metonym of goodness? And above all is it still possible to think of the human subject as a viable category in late modernity? These are some of the questions that J. H. Prynne’s poetry deals with. “Levity of Design” voices a critique of the present-day society very much from within and demonstrates how Prynne has contrived to single-handedly overcome the impasse created by the legacy of poststructuralism. In a milieu of avant-garde linguistic experiment developed from modernist techniques of Pound and Olson, but also the early Eliot as well as Velimir Khlebnikov, and against the background of the writings of Heidegger and Adorno, these poems are demonstrated to seek a language in which the notion of man can be restituted.

Book excerpt: Hammering Hot Iron is a rare work that raises important questions, draws vital distinctions, and elevates discourse within the spiritual community on the Men's Movement, Jungian psychology, archetypal and mythological studies, and polytheistic religions. Drawing on the perennial philosophy, the universal expression of absolute truth, Upton offers a metaphysical and cultural critique of Robert Bly's Iron John. Upton adopts Bly's shadow in the Jungian sense. His intellectual argument is masterfully intertwined with his own personal and spiritual journey, often expressed through original poetry. "The book is excellent. Upton's insights have exposed the shallow philosophical thinking associated with the Men's Movement, the inadequacy of polytheism as a religious faith, and the bias against Christianity. Hammering Hot Iron does a splended job of critiquing Jungian writers and in showing there is more to God than the archetype of God in the psyche. Thank you for your excellent work in setting the record straight " -- John A. Sanford, Jungian analyst "Charles Upton provides a long-overdue masterful critique of the Men's Movement, its popularizing heroes, and the archetypal psychology on which it is based. In this marvelously iconoclastic book, Upton articulates the feelings and thoughts of those who have left the movement or are wondering why they are still part of it. He does so with eloquence, wit, and not least, wisdom. --Georg Feuerstein, Ph.D., author of Voices on the Threshold of Tomorrow and Structures of Consciousness Charles Upton is a poet, social activist, and writer of the spiritual path. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With insight reminiscent of The Screwtape Letters, Rev. Louis J. Cameli challenges readers to reconsider what they've always believed about the devil. In some ways, it’s easy to believe in a devil who makes heads spin round and enables people to levitate. Many movies and books about possession and exorcism have trained spiritual seekers to identify evil by its expected Hollywood conventions. By contrast, in The Devil You Don't Know: Recognizing and Resisting Evil in Everyday Life, Cameli, nationally renowned pastoral leader and priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago, paints a challenging, unsettling portrait of the devil as a formidable adversary who works great harm, often in quiet, less-seen ways. While remaining a fixture of popular culture, the devil has—until now—been largely ignored in contemporary spiritual writing. Cameli exposes the devil’s tactics of deception, division, diversion, and discouragement, in individuals and also in institutions. This thoroughly biblical, deft exploration considers the personal and social dimensions of sin, and offers both enlightenment and hope in the power of Christ to overcome evil.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Villain: Encyclopedia of Bad Guys in Comics, Film, and Television seeks to provide one go-to reference for the study of the most popular and iconic villains in American popular culture. Since the 1980s, pop culture has focused on what makes a villain a villain. The Joker, Darth Vader, and Hannibal Lecter have all been placed under the microscope to get to the origins of their villainy. Additionally, such bad guys as Angelus from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Barnabas Collins from Dark Shadows have emphasized the desire for redemption—in even the darkest of villains. Various incarnations of Lucifer/Satan have even gone so far as to explore the very foundations of what we consider "evil." The American Villain: Encyclopedia of Bad Guys in Comics, Film, and Television seeks to collect all of those stories into one comprehensive volume. The volume opens with essays about villains in popular culture, followed by 100 A–Z entries on the most notorious bad guys in film, comics, and more. Sidebars highlight ancillary points of interest, such as authors, creators, and tropes that illuminate the motives of various villains. A glossary of key terms and a bibliography provide students with resources to continue their study of what makes the "baddest" among us so bad.
