Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Tracing the development of Indian philosophy as a single tradition of thought, these two volumes provide a classical exposition of Indian thought. The author showcases ancient philosophical texts and relates them to contemporary issues of philosophy and religion. He presents the essential meaning and significance of individual texts and philosophies and also draws parallels between Indian and western philosophical traditions. The first volume covers the Vedic and Epic periods, including expositions on the hymns of the Rig-Veda, the Upanishads, Jainism, Buddhism, and the theism of the Bhagvadgita. The second investigates the six Brahmanical philosophical systems, the theism of Ramanuja, Saiva ethics, metaphysicas and literature, and the theism of the later Vaishnavas." "This second edition, with a new Introduction by eminent philosopher, J.N. Mohanty, underlines the continuing relevance of the two volumes and the philosophic tradition they represent. Lucidly written, these books will form essential reading for students, teachers, scholars of Indian philosophy as well as general reader interested in the development and growth of Indian thought."--Jacket.

Book Synopsis Science of Yoga – A Comprehensive Approach by : Dr.P.K.Aiyasamy

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yoga is an ancient science and traced to Indus – Saraswathy Civilization of 5000 years and more. The rudiments of yoga were in practice for long in the Indian soil. Sage Patanjali’s ‘Yoga Sutra’ and ‘Hatha Yoga Pradipika’ by Yogi Swatmarama are veritable sources of knowledge and wisdom enshrined in Yoga philosophy. Thirumoolar’s ‘Thirumandhiram’ is one another rich source on Astanga Yoga. These treatises cover the entire gamut of Yoga. The subjects specified by Patanjali in Astanga Yoga are Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhayana and Samadhi. The same was the case with Thirumoolar. ‘Hatha Yoga Pradipika’ listed Asanas, Breath, Mind, Kumbhaka, Mudras, Samadhi, Laya and Nada. Apart from the Sages and Yogins of Indian origin, many researchers from West and East delved deep in this fathomless ocean and interpreted the wisdom and knowledge to benefit humanity’s health, happiness and ever-lasting peace. With the dedication of International Day of Yoga (21st day of June every year) It is now globally recognised that yoga provides a holistic approach to health and well-being of world population. A comprehensive coverage of the subjects outlined in the earliest treatises, their further interpretations and adoptions are being made in the book.
Book Synopsis Salvation in Indian Philosophy by : Ionut Moise
Download or read book Salvation in Indian Philosophy written by Ionut Moise and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-21 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive description of the ‘doctrine of salvation’ (niḥśreyasa/ mokṣa) and Vaiśeṣika, one of the oldest philosophical systems of Indian philosophy and provides an overview of theories in other related Indian philosophical systems and classical doctrines of salvation. The book examines liberation, the fourth goal of life and arguably one of the most important topics in Indian philosophy, from a comparative philosophical perspective. Contextualising classical Greek Philosophy which contains the three goals of life (Aristotle’s Ethics), and explains salvation as first understood in the theology of the Hellenistic and Patristics periods, the author analyses six classical philosophical schools of Indian philosophy in which there is a marked emphasis on the ultimate ontological elements of the world and ‘self’. Analysing Vaiśeṣika and the manner in which this lesser known system has put forward its own theory of salvation (niḥśreyasa), the author demonstrates its significance and originality as an old and influential philosophical system. He argues that it is essential for the study of other Indian sciences and for the study of all comparative philosophy. An extensive introduction to Indian soteriology, this book will be an important reference work for academics interested in comparative religion and philosophy, Indian philosophy, Asian religion and South Asian Studies.
