Book Synopsis The Blues: A Very Short Introduction by : Elijah Wald
Download or read book The Blues: A Very Short Introduction written by Elijah Wald and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-08-03 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praised as "suave, soulful, ebullient" (Tom Waits) and "a meticulous researcher, a graceful writer, and a committed contrarian" (New York Times Book Review), Elijah Wald is one of the leading popular music critics of his generation. In The Blues, Wald surveys a genre at the heart of American culture. It is not an easy thing to pin down. As Howlin' Wolf once described it, "When you ain't got no money and can't pay your house rent and can't buy you no food, you've damn sure got the blues." It has been defined by lyrical structure, or as a progression of chords, or as a set of practices reflecting West African "tonal and rhythmic approaches," using a five-note "blues scale." Wald sees blues less as a style than as a broad musical tradition within a constantly evolving pop culture. He traces its roots in work and praise songs, and shows how it was transformed by such professional performers as W. C. Handy, who first popularized the blues a century ago. He follows its evolution from Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith through Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix; identifies the impact of rural field recordings of Blind Lemon Jefferson, Charley Patton and others; explores the role of blues in the development of both country music and jazz; and looks at the popular rhythm and blues trends of the 1940s and 1950s, from the uptown West Coast style of T-Bone Walker to the "down home" Chicago sound of Muddy Waters. Wald brings the story up to the present, touching on the effects of blues on American poetry, and its connection to modern styles such as rap. As with all of Oxford's Very Short Introductions, The Blues tells you--with insight, clarity, and wit--everything you need to know to understand this quintessentially American musical genre.
Book Synopsis Singapore's Health Care System by : K. E. T. Al SATKU
Download or read book Singapore's Health Care System written by K. E. T. Al SATKU and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-11-13 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "How did Singapore's health care system transform itself into one of the best in the world? It not only provides easy access, but its standards of health care, not only in curative medicine but also in prevention, are exemplary. Fifty years ago, the infant mortality rate (IMR) was 26 per thousand live births; today the IMR is 2. Life expectancy was 64 years then; today, it is 83. The Singapore Medicine brand is trusted internationally, and patients are drawn to Singapore from all over the world. And while many countries struggle to finance their health care, Singapore has developed a health care financing framework that makes health care affordable for its people and gives sustainability to the health care system. Reliability is provided by a professional workforce that seeks to continually learn, improve and become ever more proficient with cutting edge technology while emphasizing the relational aspects of health care by nurturing compassion and maintaining high standards of integrity. Convenience and safety are enhanced by a unifying IT system that enables the portability of medical records across health care institutions. All these have been achieved not by chance but by careful planning, strong leadership and dedicated people who are prepared to learn from Singapore's own experience while adapting best practices from around the world. But the system is not without challenges -- not least those of an aging population, and an increasing market influence. This book provides a fascinating insight into the development of Singapore's health care system from the early days of fighting infections and providing nutrition supplementation for school children, to today's management of lifestyle diseases and high-end tertiary care. It also discusses how the system must adapt to help Singaporeans continue to "live well, live long, and with peace of mind."--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the middle of the nineteenth century, the very existence of European colonial settlement in New Zealand was under threat. With Queen Victoria's British forces stretched thinly across the globe, the New Zealand colony had to look to its sister colonial states in Australia for support. This ground-breaking work shows, for the first time in detail, how the military, social and economic brotherhood later embodied in the notion of the Anzac spirit began not on the sandy beaches of Gallipoli but 50 years earlier in the damp forests and fields of the North Island of New Zealand

Download or read book Yvain written by Chretien de Troyes and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1987-09-10 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twelfth-century French poet Chrétien de Troyes is a major figure in European literature. His courtly romances fathered the Arthurian tradition and influenced countless other poets in England as well as on the continent. Yet because of the difficulty of capturing his swift-moving style in translation, English-speaking audiences are largely unfamiliar with the pleasures of reading his poems. Now, for the first time, an experienced translator of medieval verse who is himself a poet provides a translation of Chrétien’s major poem, Yvain, in verse that fully and satisfyingly captures the movement, the sense, and the spirit of the Old French original. Yvain is a courtly romance with a moral tenor; it is ironic and sometimes bawdy; the poetry is crisp and vivid. In addition, the psychological and the socio-historical perceptions of the poem are of profound literary and historical importance, for it evokes the emotions and the values of a flourishing, vibrant medieval past.

Download or read book Rear Vision written by Shayne Brown and published by . This book was released on 2019-11 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rear Vision: Celebrating Australia's Early Orthoptists profiles the first 76 Australian orthoptists who trained between 1931 to 1954. The profiles include the orthoptists' place/s of training, where they practised, the positions they held in the professional association, Orthoptic Association of Australia (now Orthoptics Australia), and the social context in which they trained and practised. These accounts provide an insight into the formative years of orthoptics, a profession run solely by female practitioners. These women were inspired to choose a career at a time when many of them were not encouraged to further their knowledge or embark on a career. The individual stories show how orthoptics presented an opportunity to work in an intellectually stimulating career and opened up the prospect of running a professional small business. The social mores of Australian society during the period covered by these profiles dictated that most women worked between leaving school and getting married. After marriage, many orthoptists, like other women in the workforce, ceased employment to manage their homes and bring up their children. Nevertheless, these pioneering women forged the development of orthoptics, at the time, a new allied health profession. A characteristic common to most of these women was a keen and enquiring mind. They were women of great foresight, adaptable to change with a pioneering spirit where sheer determination was required to succeed. They saw the need to establish a national orthoptic association in 1944, the third oldest in the world and built Australia's reputation in the international orthoptic community. A brief history of Orthoptics covering the period 1931 to the mid-1950s precedes the profiles. The historical notes cover the changes and developments in orthoptic training and in clinical practice and research.
