Bulletin 47, we recently gave Iris chromosome counts made by Dr. Randolph of Cornell University, Simonet, Longley and others. Dr. Randolph will soon make several more important determinations and others are undertaking the work in considerable quantity. With the-counts available, it is now possible to predict at least some of the characteristics to be anticipated from many crosses. A very limited con sideration of chromosome numbers in connection with our crossing records indicates that material practical advantage may come from a real study, especially with the additi-onal determinations in prospect. To avoid duplica tion, others doing this work should tell kinds to Dr. Harry Everett, Robert Schreiner or the writer. They will reciprocate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Iris Tms work has been written with two principal aims in view. I have endeavoured, in the first place, to give all the useful information upon culture that is available, and, secondly, to rovide an easy and efficient means for the verification ofp names and for the naming of plants. In the verification of names that happen to be correct there should be no difficulty, but with regard to the naming of plants, it must be remembered that Irises are exceedingly variable. They hybridise both in the garden and in a wild state, and intermediates, or forms not agreeing precisely with any description, are at least liable to be met with. I still hope, however, that naming will be effected in most cases without difficulty. By dividing into small, easily understood groups, and by the construction of keys, I have hoped to provide a Special facility. With deft use of examples of humor and wordplay, Steven Pinker weaves our vast knowledge of language into a compelling story: language is a human instinct, wired into our brains by evolution. The Language Instinct received the William James Book Prize from the American Psychological Association and the Public Interest Award from the Linguistics Society of America. This edition includes an update on advances in the science of language since The Language Instinct was first published.
Book Synopsis The Thorn Birds by : Colleen McCullough
Download or read book The Thorn Birds written by Colleen McCullough and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2010-05-11 with total page 689 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most beloved novels of all time, Colleen McCullough's magnificent saga of dreams, struggles, dark passions, and forbidden love in the Australian outback has enthralled readers the world over. The Thorn Birds is a chronicle of three generations of Clearys—an indomitable clan of ranchers carving lives from a beautiful, hard land while contending with the bitterness, frailty, and secrets that penetrate their family. It is a poignant love story, a powerful epic of struggle and sacrifice, a celebration of individuality and spirit. Most of all, it is the story of the Clearys' only daughter, Meggie, and the haunted priest, Father Ralph de Bricassart—and the intense joining of two hearts and souls over a lifetime, a relationship that dangerously oversteps sacred boundaries of ethics and dogma.
