Book Synopsis The Philippines and the International Monetary Fund Negotiations on Petroleum and Imports by : Kenneth Faulve-Montojo

This book was released on 2018-10-31 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In their negotiations with the International Monetary Fund, Philippine chief negotiators attempt to build coalitions to implement reform. Deference and “External-Internal” sequencing tactics are quite common, but the theoretical literature has not examined the conditions under which they are effective or marginalized. This study uses a “Within-Case Study Method of Causal Inference” to examine twenty-four observations from the years 1984-1994 that examine the interaction of the Philippine chief economic negotiators with the IMF, the Chief of Governments, international and domestic, and cabinet and societal veto players on the issues of petroleum price and import reforms. Through this approach, the study rules out alternative deductive system level theories to explain economic outcomes; refines the two-level game framework, generates a midrange typology on the pattern of successes and failures of the negotiations, and provides recommendations on manipulable variables for policy makers. The study suggests that these tactics are constrained by the leverage and signal provided by international veto players and the interaction between formal and informal domestic institutions.

Book Synopsis The Green Tiger by : Barbara Goldoftas
Download or read book The Green Tiger written by Barbara Goldoftas and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Philippines was once famous for the beauty of its reef-ringed islands, white beaches, and lush forests. In less than a half-century, its forests were felled, its oceans over-fished, and its coral reefs destroyed. The rapid harvest of once-abundant resources has brought droughts, deadly flash floods, and the collapse of vital fisheries. As the rural economy weakened and millions migrated to cities, they overwhelmed the urban infrastructure. Today, the Philippines stands as an example of the profound and sweeping consequences of ecological decline. In The Green Tiger, Barbara Goldoftas documents this tragic trajectory. But hers is not a story of hopelessness and inevitable defeat. In lyrical, unflinching prose, she traces the struggle for conservation in the Philippines, from isolated villages to large cities, and in the process illustrates the surprising ways in which conservation and economic growth can effectively co-exist."--Publisher's website.

Book Synopsis Agrarian Reform in the Philippines by : Jeffrey M. Riedinger
Download or read book Agrarian Reform in the Philippines written by Jeffrey M. Riedinger and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book evaluates the capacity of new democratic regimes to promote redistributive agrarian reform, an issue of contemporary concern in countries throughout the world. Agrarian reform is particularly complex and difficult for new democracies because it curtails the power and privileges of influential elements of society. The author analyzes the problems attendant on political liberalization and social and economic reform by examining in detail the formulation and implementation of agrarian reform in the Philippines under the governments of Corazon Aquino and her successor, Fidel Ramos. The book explores how the interaction between state and society shapes reform policy decisions, paying close attention to the role of cultural variables and social organizations. It shows that what is needed for successful agrarian reform is a combination of sustained, forceful leadership from a disciplined, reform-oriented political party and grassroots agitation by peasant organizations.

Book excerpt: The present volume analyzes the norms, structures and presences of technical cooperation in the Philippines, in the light of the reforms introduced by the Development Assistance Committee of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in the mid-1990's. It explores how the development aid and the technical cooperation agenda of bilateral and multilateral aid agencies have strived to respond to the recurrent issues of poverty and social and economic inequities, slow growth and corruption in government through programs and projects not only of the national government but also of non-government organizations and local governments. It shows how in many funding agencies, governance is a recurrent theme. It investigates how technical cooperation, as it has been done in the Philippines and in two particular areas (public sector reform and agriculture), has supported or undermined the capacity development goals of technical cooperation"--P. Book Synopsis The Fisheries Co-management Experience by : Douglas Clyde Wilson
Download or read book The Fisheries Co-management Experience written by Douglas Clyde Wilson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For two decades the idea of governments and fishers working together to manage fisheries has been advocated, questioned, disparaged and, most importantly, attempted in fisheries from North and South America through Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania. This book is the first time these experiences have been pulled together in a single volume, summarized and explained. The Fisheries Co-management Experience begins with a review of the intellectual foundations of the co-management idea from several professional perspectives. Next, fisheries researchers from six global regions describe what has been happening on the ground in their area. Finally, the volume offers a set of reflections by some of the best authors in the field. The end result describes both the state-of-the-art and emerging issues for one of the most important trends in natural resources management.

Book Synopsis The Double Burden of Malnutrition by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book The Double Burden of Malnutrition written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In several developing countries, undernourishment is still prevalent while obesity and its related co-morbidities, including chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer, are emerging and contributing increasingly to morbidity and mortality. Several countries are now facing a double burden of malnutrition, i.e. caloric (energy) and micronutrient deficiencies and, at the same time, obesity and diet-related chronic diseases. This "nutrition transition" is associated with rapid economic development, urbanization and global changes, which lead to shifts towards a more energy dense diet, including more fat and sugar and more processed foods, and at the same time dramatic alterations in physical activity patterns and lifestyles. While infectious diseases and maternal and child undernutrition continue to take an enormous toll in lives and health worldwide, the rapid rise of NCDs represents one of the major health challenges to global development in the twenty-first century and threatens economic and social development of nations as well as the lives and health of millions globally. This publication explores the situation of the double burden of malnutrition in six geographically and culturally diverse case study countries and presents conclusions and recommendations from a follow-up workshop with the case study authors.
