Book excerpt: The Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 1999 Video Study is a follow-up and expansion of the TIMSS 1995 Video Study of mathematics teaching. Larger and more ambitious than the first, the 1999 study investigated eighth-grade science teaching as well as mathematics teaching, expanded the number of countries, and included more countries with relatively high achievement on TIMSS assessments in comparison to the United States. The purpose of this report is to introduce new NCES survey data through the presentation of selected descriptive information. Readers are cautioned not to draw causal inferences based solely on the bivariate results presented. It is important to note that many of the variables examined in this report are related to one another, and complex interactions and relationships have not been explored here. Release of the report is intended to make the information available to the public and encourage more in-depth analysis of the data. (Contains 2 endnotes, 3 tables, and 10 figures.).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exemplary stories of innovation from around the world In an age of rising inequality, getting a good education increasingly separates the haves from the have nots. In countries like the United States, getting a good education is one of the most promising routes to upper-middle-class status, even more so than family wealth. Experts predict that by 2030, 825 million children will reach adulthood without basic secondary-level skills, and it will take a century for the most marginalized youth to achieve the educational levels that the wealthiest enjoy today. But these figures do not even account for the range of skills and competencies needed to thrive today in work, citizenship, and life. In a world where the ability to manipulate knowledge and information, think critically, and collaboratively solve problems are essential to thrive, access to a quality education is crucial for all young people. In Leapfrogging Inequality, researchers chart a new path for global education by examining the possibility of leapfrogging—harnessing innovation to rapidly accelerate educational progress—to ensure that all young people develop the skills they need for a fast-changing world. Analyzing a catalog of nearly 3,000 global education innovations, the largest such collection to date, researchers explore the potential of current practices to enable such a leap. As part of this analysis, the book presents an evidence-based framework for getting ahead in education, which it grounds in the here-and-now by narrating exemplary stories of innovation from around the world. Together, these stories and resources will inspire educators, investors, leaders of nongovernmental organizations, and policymakers alike to rally around a new vision of educational progress—one that ensures we do not leave yet another generation of young people behind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching Secondary and Middle School Mathematics combines the latest developments in research, technology, and standards with a vibrant writing style to help teachers prepare for the excitement and challenges of teaching secondary and middle school mathematics. The book explores the mathematics teaching profession by examining the processes of planning, teaching, and assessing student progress through practical examples and recommendations. Beginning with an examination of what it means to teach and learn mathematics, the reader is led through the essential components of teaching, concluding with an examination of how teachers continue with professional development throughout their careers. Hundreds of citations are used to support the ideas presented in the text, and specific websites and other resources are presented for future study by the reader. Classroom scenarios are presented to engage the reader in thinking through specific challenges that are common in mathematics classrooms. The sixth edition has been updated and expanded with particular emphasis on the latest technology, resources, and standards. The reader is introduced to the ways that students think and how to best meet their needs through planning that involves attention to differentiation, as well as how to manage a classroom for success. Features include: The entire text has been reorganized so that assessment takes a more central role in planning and teaching. Unit 3 (of 5) now addresses the use of summative and formative assessments to inform classroom teaching practices. ● A new feature, "Links and Resources," has been added to each of the 13 chapters. While the book includes a substantial listing of citations and resources after the chapters, five strongly recommended and practical resources are spotlighted at the end of each chapter as an easy reference to some of the most important materials on the topic. ● Approximately 150 new citations have either replaced or been added to the text to reflect the latest in research, materials, and resources that support the teaching of mathematics. ● A Quick Reference Guide has been added to the front of the book to assist the reader in identifying the most useful chapter features by topic. ● A significant revision to Chapter 13 now includes discussions of common teaching assessments used for field experiences and licensure, as well as a discussion of practical suggestions for success in methods and student teaching experiences. ● Chapter 9 on the practical use of classroom technology has been revised to reflect the latest tools available to classroom teachers, including apps that can be run on handheld, personal devices. An updated Instructor’s Manual features a test bank, sample classroom activities, Powerpoint slides, chapter summaries, and learning outcomes for each chapter, and can be accessed by instructors online at www.routledge.com/9780367146511

Book excerpt: Building on the foundation set in Volume I—a landmark synthesis of research in the field—Volume II is a comprehensive, state-of-the-art new volume highlighting new and emerging research perspectives. The contributors, all experts in their research areas, represent the international and gender diversity in the science education research community. The volume is organized around six themes: theory and methods of science education research; science learning; culture, gender, and society and science learning; science teaching; curriculum and assessment in science; science teacher education. Each chapter presents an integrative review of the research on the topic it addresses—pulling together the existing research, working to understand the historical trends and patterns in that body of scholarship, describing how the issue is conceptualized within the literature, how methods and theories have shaped the outcomes of the research, and where the strengths, weaknesses, and gaps are in the literature. Providing guidance to science education faculty and graduate students and leading to new insights and directions for future research, the Handbook of Research on Science Education, Volume II is an essential resource for the entire science education community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is effective mathematics teaching? This book represents the first purposeful cross-cultural collection of studies to answer this question from teachers’ perspectives. It focuses particularly on how teachers view effective teaching of mathematics. Teachers’ voices are heard and celebrated throughout the studies reported in this volume. These studies are drawn from many parts of the world representing both Eastern and Western cultural traditions. The editors and authors have deliberately included the views of teachers and educators from different cultural backgrounds, taking into account that beliefs on effective mathematics teaching and its features are highly influenced by one’s own culture. The book will provide readers and scholars with the stimulus to take the ideas presented and expand on them in ways that help improve mathematics education for children, teachers and researchers in both the East and the West.
