Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1986. Hitherto, most educational managers, including head teachers and senior staff in schools, have been expected to carry out their management tasks without any formal training. Recent initiatives, however, are changing this and all educational managers are now being encouraged to undertake some form of training. This book provides a framework for the study of educational management. Management in other professions has been a major concern for a long time and this book selects from this existing literature, theory and experience (for example from management studies and business studies) and relates relevant material to the context of education. It looks at the major themes and problems in educational management, discusses the appropriate theories and shows how good practices may be applied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to ascertain high school teachers' perceptions of the impact of the Keystone Exams and Student Learning Objectives (SLOs) on teacher job satisfaction and morale and to identify high school teachers' thoughts on how they can best be supported to implement these initiatives in their practice. Forty-three high school teachers from 4 suburban high schools in Pennsylvania completed surveys containing both Likert scale and open-ended questions. Additionally, 6 teachers participated in structured interviews which further explored the perspectives of high school teachers. The results of the study showed that high school teachers believe that their job satisfaction and morale have been negatively impacted by the implementation of the Keystone Exams and SLOs. Teachers expressed a desire for additional time to collaborate with colleagues so that they can plan high quality instruction to prepare students for the Keystone Exams and so that they can create and monitor SLOs effectively. The teachers also explained that they would benefit from staff development on SLOs, including exemplars, so that they have a better understanding of the expectations of SLOs.
