Book excerpt: The higher-order modes (HOMs) of APS storage ring (SR) rf cavities and waveguides were measured under various operating conditions. The HOMs of the 352-MHz rf cavity can be one of the major contributors to the coupled bunch (CB) instability. The distribution of HOMs under various conditions of beam current, cavity temperature, cavity tuning, single-bunch and multi-bunch operation, and fill patterns, are presented. The HOMs' shunt impedance of the loaded cavities were also measured. The effect of stagger tuning of the 16 cavities and their waveguide system is compared, and the HOM dampers are examined.

To understand and prevent the loss of a ceramic window or an input coupler in the Advanced Photon Source (APS) storage ring rf cavity, the multipacting phenomenon is being investigated experimentally. This paper begins with a description of simple model, presents a hardware design, and concludes with measurement of multipacting. Multipacting is explored in conjunction with conditioning the cavities and interaction with the stored beam.

As described in the paper''Coupled Bunch Instabilities in the APS Ring'' by L. Emery, several of the higher order modes (HOM) in these cavities cause instability thresholds below the desired operating level. In order to clearly identify these modes, an experimental method of measuring the fields is necessary. A well- known technique is measurement with probes or loops extending in from the walls, but this cannot be used in the interior. A different approach is the use of small perturbations which cause a frequency shift that is related in a known way to the local field. This perturbation can be calculated for objects of needle-shaped, spherical, and disk-shaped form. With proper use this method can give very accurate measurements of the direction and magnitude of the electric and magnetic fields. This report gives examples of a method of measuring electric field strengths in a resonant cavity. It is shown that insertion of a metallic bead (needle), whose dimensions are small compared to the wavelength, perturbs the frequency of a resonant electromagnetic cavity by an amount that depends upon the local electric field at the position of the perturbing object.

Book excerpt: The short electron bunch length (30ps design target) of the Advanced Light Source (ALS) stored beam is capable exciting a wide spectrum of higher order mode (HOM) frequencies. Further, the small aperture and low cut off frequency of the beam enveloping components does not allow for transmission and consequent attenuation of the lower frequency HOM components. The small cross section and divergence of the high brightness electron beam will allow for more sophisticated high resolution experiments by synchrotron radiation users. A more stringent requirement on beam position stability results, however. In this area transmitted mechanical vibration becomes a problem. The ALS RF system splits 300kW of CW 500MHz power between two single cell cavities. Compared to past practice this power rating is high. The use of only two cavities however has some advantages, it simplifies the waveguide feed system and releases room in straight sections for insertion devices, more important it reduces HOM and beam impedance problems. 3 refs., 2 figs.

Book excerpt: In order to determine the shielding structure around the Advanced Photon Source (APS) synchrotron and storage ring RF stations, the X-ray radiation has been measured in the near field and far field regions of the RF cavities during the normal conditioning process. Two cavity types, a prototype 352-MHz single-cell cavity and a 352-MHz five-cell cavity, are used on the APS and are conditioned in the RF test stand. Vacuum measurements are also taken on a prototype 352-MHz single-cell cavity and a 352-MHz five-cell cavity. The data will be compared with data on the five-cell cavities from CERN.

Book excerpt: Recent machine studies at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) showed that at a beam current of about 140 mA, the storage ring (SR) injection-area components experienced unacceptable elevated temperatures. Heating of these components is related to several factors, namely: aperture discontinuity, poor contact between the rf fingers and the solid sleeve liner, inadequate x-ray shielding, and nonuniform conductive coating on the kicker ceramic chambers. To address these deficiencies, we have developed design upgrades for the injection-area kicker magnets, vacuum chambers, transition absorbers, and bellows-liner assemblies. In this paper, we discuss important features of the new designs and their impact on machine operation at high beam current.

Book excerpt: The addition of undulators and wigglers into synchrotron storage rings created new problems in terms of protecting the integrity of the ring vacuum chamber. If the photon beam from these devices were missteered into striking an inadequately cooled section of the storage ring vacuum chamber, the structural strength might be reduced sufficiently that the vacuum envelope could be penetrated, resulting in long downtime of the storage ring. The new generation of high-energy synchrotron light sources will produce photon beams of such high power density that cooling of the vacuum chamber will not prevent a potential penetration of the vacuum envelope, and other methods of preventing this occurrence will be required. Since active methods will be used to ensure that the beams are delivered to beam lines for users during normal operation, there is a need for passive protection methods during non-routine operation, such as turning on new beam lines, injection, etc., when the active systems may be disabled. In addition, the passive methods could prevent the problem from arising and provide the rapid time response necessary for the highest power beams, a property that might not be easily and reliably provided by active methods during the early operation of these machines. This paper summarizes the results of a task group that studied the problem and outlines passive methods of protection for the Advanced Photon Source (APS). 2 refs., 3 figs., 1 tab.

Book excerpt: The Advanced Photon Source (APS), a third-generation synchrotron light source, was commissioned in 1995 at Argonne National Laboratory and has been fully operational for beamline users since 1997. The APS storage ring can accommodate up to 68 user beamlines; about 70% of the available beamlines are currently in use by various collaborative access teams (CATs). The 7-GeV synchrotron light source produces light in the soft to hard x-ray range that is used for research in such areas as x-ray instrumentation; material, chemical and atomic sciences; biology; and geo/soil/environmental sciences. For the successful operation of an x-ray light source such as the Advanced Photon Source, the long-term stability of the concrete floor supporting the beam components and user beamlines is crucial. Settlements impact the orbit and location of the x-ray source points as well as the position of the x-ray beamlines. This paper compares the results of two successive resurveys of the APS accelerator components performed in 1995 and 1998.
