Book Synopsis The Unification of German Education by : Val D. Rust
Download or read book The Unification of German Education written by Val D. Rust and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-03 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1995. This study of the integration of East and West German education following the collapse of the German Democratic Republic in 1989 focuses on policy formation and implementation during this period of great social and political turbulence. It is the result of a research project undertaken shortly after the unification. The authors lived in East Germany for a full year, looking carefully at individual schools, vocational training centers, teacher colleges, and universities. The book considers questions of how education policy is successfully formulated, conditions in which that policy is implemented and the consequences of the implemented educational reform. The first chapters present the context and history of German education and the later chapters discuss the unification and the formation of the new school laws and the successes and failures. The authors' research shows that even before the unification East Germans had already opted for a system consistent with West German education law. However, the West Germans disregarded these changes and imposed their own version of reform on East Germany. The German situation at this time is of great interest to all educators, particularly students of educational policy making, as well as researchers in political science, economics, and sociology.

Book Synopsis Higher Education in the Post-Communist World by : Paula L.W. Sabloff
Download or read book Higher Education in the Post-Communist World written by Paula L.W. Sabloff and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-29 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1999, Higher Education in the Post-Communist World focuses on specific public universities during their, and their nations’ early transition years (1989-1995) from communism to democracy and the changes from centrally planned, to free-market economies. The book offers a detailed view of universities in transition rather than case studies of entire systems of higher education, providing an opportunity for readers to understand the national politico-economic transition on higher education– individual faculty, students, and administrator; departments; and university – in a more immediate way than a system-wide approach would. The book presents information on specific universities and how the demise of the Soviet Union affected the governance, finance, faculty, students, and curriculum in several post-communist countries.
Book Synopsis The German Democratic Republic by : Henry Krisch
Download or read book The German Democratic Republic written by Henry Krisch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important new overview of the German Democratic Republic focuses on the country’s search for identity and legitimacy throughout its history. Dr. Henry Krisch analyzes major aspects of East German life—political, economic, cultural, and societal—to answer the fundamental question of the nature of the GDR. Arguing that East Germany has been shaped by history to an unusual degree, he explores the country’s historical background, including the Soviet Zone, the origins of the GDR, and the leadership of Ulbricht and Honecker, and examines the role and structure of the party, state, and military and security forces. The main emphasis of this book, however, is upon current problems and on likely responses to them in the near future. Issues such as the viability of communist politics in a technologically advanced society, the relationship of the GDR to a common German heritage and a competing West German state, and the country’s role within the Soviet alliance system are examined in detail, and current social concerns, including the peace movement, cultural trends, the role of women and youth, and the prime importance of sports, are discussed.
