Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A summary is presented of a research program aimed at the improvement of high-temperature strain gages of the electrical resistance type. Potential ceramic and metal components were evaluated and a gage was devised that was based on these evaluations. This gage (NBS 5B) was flexible and easy to install; however, it lacked resistance stability at higher temperatures. In an attempt to minimize this deficiency, ceramic cements were developed that showed greater electrical resistivity than had been previously observed in the range 800 to 1800 degrees Fahrenheit; also, a technique was devised for increasing the resistance to ground by applying a fired-on ceramic coating to the grid of a specifically developed unbacked gage. A study was made of the cause of the erratic response of cemented gages that had not been preheated prior to use. There were strong indications that the erratic response was caused mostly by the rapid decrease in resistance that accompanied structural changes in the cement.

Visual Basic is used as a main programming language to develop a GUI (Graphical User Interface) application. Then, the sensor for this project is a Thermocouple type K. Wireless system is used to interface the GUI and the thermocouple sensor and ZigBee will be used for the wireless. Wireless temperature measurement system is developed using ZigBee communication technology. It overcomes the disadvantages of wired measurement system, such as complicated wiring and difficult maintenance. The wireless sensor networks based on ZigBee has the characteristics of insulation, strong electromagnetic immunity, low power and high accuracy, solving the problem of easy breaking, easy aging, cannot resist high temperature in traditional optical fiber temperature measurement technology, saving the trouble of wiring, ensuring the reliability and safety of the operation. For this project, the temperature measured by the thermocouple is transmitted to the PC by transceiver controlled by ZigBee, and the temperature data is managed by PC. The thermocouple sensor detected temperature change and send the input to software system where the input is converted from current into voltage signal. In GUI application, the data is recorded and manipulated to get the appropriate result.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many advanced nuclear reactor designs require new fuel, cladding, and structural materials. Data are needed to characterize the performance of these new materials in high temperature, oxidizing, and radiation conditions. To obtain this data, robust instrumentation is needed that can survive proposed test conditions. Standard thermocuoples for measuring temperature in-pile degrade at temperatures above 1100 oC. Hence, INL initiated a project to develop specialized thermocouples for high temperature in-pile applications. Results from efforts to develop, fabricate, and evaluate specialized high-temperature thermocouples for in-pile applications suggest that several material combinations are viable. Tests show that several low neutron cross-section candidate materials are resistant to material interactions and remain ductile at high temperatures. In addition, results indicate that the thermoelectric response is singlevalued and repeatable with acceptable resolution for the candidate thermoelements considered. The final selection of the thermocouple materials will depend on the desired peak temperature and accuracy requirements. If thermocouples are needed that measure temperatures at 1600 oC or higher, the doped Mo / Nb-1%Zr and Mo-1.6% Nb / Nb-1%Zr thermoelement wire combinations are recommended with HfO2 insulation, and a Nb-1%Zr sheath. Additional evaluations are underway to characterize the performance of this proposed thermocouple design. INL has worked to optimize this thermocouple's stability. With appropriate heat treatment and fabrication approaches, results indicate that the effects of thermal cycling on the calibration of the proposed thermocouple design can be minimized. INL has initiated a series of high temperature (from 1200 to 1800 oC) long duration (up to six months) tests. Initial results indicate the INL-developed thermocouple's termoelectric response is stable with less than 15 oC drift observed in over 3500 hours of the planned 4000 hours of tests at 1200 oC. In comparison, commercially-available Type K and N thermocouples included in these 1200 oC tests have experienced drifts up to of over100 oC.
