Book excerpt: Cooling curves of Fe-Ni alloys (1-10%Ni) quenched at rates up to 60 000 degC/s, reveal two transformation mechanisms: the lower-temperature mechanism is shown, by the criterion of shape change, to be martensitic. The measured M(s) temperatures do not agree with the experiments or calculations of previous investigators. In all but the 10% alloy, the higher-temperature transformation (believed to be the 'massive' transformation) occurs about 50 degC above M(s). The critical cooling rate to produce a martensitic product decreases from about 30 000 degC/s in the 1%Ni alloy to 15 000 degC/s in the 7% alloy. (Author).

Book excerpt: "The Columbus Laboratories, Battelle Memorial Institute, originally prepared these reports in 1965 and later revised them, updating the information to include the latest technology through 1968. This report is one of a series pertaining to the fabricating of nickel, nickel-base, and cobalt-base alloys. This report deals with heat treating and working nickel and nickel-base alloys, and with the effects of these operations on the mechanical properties of the materials. The subjects covered are annealing, solution treating, stress relieving, stress equalizing, age hardening, hot working, cold working, combinations of working and heat treating (often referred to as thermomechanical treating), and properties of the materials at various temperatures. The equipment and procedures used in working the materials are discussed, along with the common problems that may be encountered and the precautions and corrective measures that are available."--Foreword.

Book Synopsis Phase Transformations in Steels by : Elena Pereloma
Download or read book Phase Transformations in Steels written by Elena Pereloma and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-05-11 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The processing-microstructure-property relationships in steels continue to present challenges to researchers because of the complexity of phase transformation reactions and the wide spectrum of microstructures and properties achievable. This major two-volume work summarises the current state of research on phase transformations in steels and its implications for the emergence of new steels with enhanced engineering properties.Volume 2 reviews current research on diffusionless transformations and phase transformations in high strength steels, as well as advances in modelling and analytical techniques which underpin this research. Chapters in part one discuss the crystallography and kinetics of martensite transformations, the morphology, substructure and tempering of martensite as well as shape memory in ferrous alloys. Part two summarises research on phase transformations in high strength low alloy (HSLA) steels, transformation induced plasticity (TRIP)-assisted multiphase steels, quenched and partitioned steels, advanced nanostructured bainitic steels, high manganese twinning induced plasticity (TWIP) and maraging steels. The final two parts of the book review advances in modelling and the use of advanced analytical techniques to improve our understanding of phase transformations in steels. With its distinguished editors and distinguished international team of contributors, the two volumes of Phase transformations in steels is a standard reference for all those researching the properties of steel and developing new steels in such areas as automotive engineering, oil and gas and energy production. Alongside its companion volume, this major two-volume work summarises the current state of research on phase transformations in steels Reviews research on diffusionless transformations and phase transformations in high strength steels Examines advances in modelling and the use of advanced analytical techniques to improve understanding of phase transformations in steels

Download or read book Phase Transformations and Heat Treatments of Steels written by Bankim Chandra Ray and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The perpetual flow of understanding between phase transformation that controls grain/microstructures and heat treatment which decides the size of grains/microstructures of steels is not well articulated in the perspective of undergraduate students. In Phase Transformations and Heat Treatments of Steels, theories of phase transformation have been used to obtain a desirable phase or combination of phases by performing appropriate heat treatment operations, leading to unification of both the concepts. Further, it includes special and critical heat treatment practices, case studies, local and in-service heat treatments, curative and preventive measures of heat treatment defects for several common and high-performance applications. Features: Presents fundamentals of phase transformation in steels Analyzes basics of phase transformation due to heat treatment of steel under various environmental conditions Explains application of heat treatment for different structural components Discusses heat treatment defects and detection Emphasizes heat treatment of special steels and in-situ heat treatment practices

Book Synopsis Creep of Crystals by : Jean-Paul Poirier
Download or read book Creep of Crystals written by Jean-Paul Poirier and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1985-02-28 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook describes the physics of the plastic deformation of solids at high temperatures. It is directed at geologists or geophysicists interested in the high-temperature behaviour of crystals who wish to become acquainted with the methods of materials science in so far as they are useful to earth scientists. It explains the most important models and recent experimental results without losing the reader in the primary literature of materials science. In turn the book deals with the essential solid-state physics; thermodynamics and hydrostatics of creep; creep models and their applications in the geological sciences; diffusion creep; superplastic deformation and deformation enhanced by phase transformations. Five concluding chapters give experimental results for metals, ceramics and minerals. There are extensive bibliographies to aid further study.
