Book excerpt: With the exponential growth of the number of Internet nodes, the volume of the data transported on the backbone has increased with the same trend. The load of the global Internet backbone will soon increase to tens of terabits per second. This indicates that the backbone bandwidth requirements will increase by a factor of 50 to 100 every seven years. Transportation of such high volumes of data requires suitable media with low loss and high bandwidth. Among the available transmission media, optical fibers achieve the best performance in terms of loss and bandwidth. High-speed data can be transported over hundreds of kilometers of single-mode fiber without significant loss in signal integrity. These fibers progressively benefit from reduction of cost and improvement of perf- mance. Meanwhile, the electronic interfaces used in an optical network are not capable of exploiting the ultimate bandwidth of the fiber, limiting the throughput of the network. Different solutions at both the system and the circuit levels have been proposed to increase the data rate of the backbone. System-level solutions are based on the utilization of wave-division multiplexing (WDM), using different colors of light to transmit s- eral sequences simultaneously. In parallel with that, a great deal of effort has been put into increasing the operating rate of the electronic transceivers using highly-developed fabrication processes and novel c- cuit techniques.

After this, the book introduces a new and robust electronic equalizer technique that makes data rates of 3Gb/s possible, without changing the manufacturing technology. The application of this technique can be found in short haul fibre communication, optical printed circuit boards, but also photodiodes for laser disks.

A radio transmits and receives electro-magnetic signals through the air. The signals are usually transmitted on high frequency carriers. For example, a t- ical voice signal requires only 30 Kilohertz bandwidth. When it is transmitted by a FM radio station, it is often carried by a frequency in the range of tens of megahertz to hundreds of megahertz. Usually a radio is categorized by its carrier frequency, such as 900 MHz radio or 5 GHz radio. In general, the higher the carrier frequency, the better the directivity, but the more difficult the radio design.

Whereas traditional gigabit per second links has been in bipolar or GaAs, this research aims to push the use of CMOS process technology in such links. Intrinsic gate speed limitations are overcome by parallelizing the data. The on-chip frequency is maintained at a fraction (1/16) of the off-chip data rate. Clocks with carefully controlled phases tapped from a local ring oscillator are driven to a bank of input samplers to convert the serial bit stream into parallel data. Similarly, the overlap of multiple-phased clocks are used to synchronize the multiplexing of the parallel data onto the transmission line. To perform clock/data recovery, data is further oversampled with finer phase separation and passed to digital logic. The digital logic operates upon the samples to detect transitions in the bit stream to track the bit boundaries. This tracking can operate at the cycle rate of the digital logic allowing robustness to systematic phase noise. The challenge lies in the capturing of the high frequency data stream and generating low jitter, accurately spaced clock edges. A test chip is built demonstrating the transmission and recovery of a 4.0-Gb/s bit streams with
